Schumann's Piano Quintet has always been one of his most beloved pieces of chamber music, and Brahms's was one of his first great musical successes. Neither composer ever explored the medium again, so the two works make a very logical coupling. Alone among major labels today, Naxos seems dedicated to creating a truly comprehensive catalogue of chamber music recordings, and even more importantly, to keeping them in print long enough for music lovers to explore their musical riches. In artists like the Kodaly Quartet and Jeno Jando, they have musicians of as fine a caliber as you will find anywhere, and at budget price you can go crazy. And you should. --David Hurwitz
I wonder why after 25 years of listening to classical music that I hadn't come across these pieces. I usually have a bad reaction, usually boredom, to chamber music. The only piano quintet that I know really well is Shostakovich's. Both of these surprised me. I have played them through three times since I got this CD yesterday. I fall more in love with these pieces each time I hear them.
There must be something to do with the Kodaly string quartet and Jeno Jando to create such inspired music making. But before I get to over enthusiastic I will qualify my review again by saying this is the only recording I have of these works.
I recommend this CD. You can't go wrong with the Naxos price either.
Both these quintets are such great works and these are fine performances. Pollini and the Italiano may be better on the Brahms, but then you don't get the Schumann.
