Jazz pianist Michika Fukumori was born in Japan but has been living and performing in New York City since 2000. The magnetic draw to New York City was her passion to study jazz and be a part of the New York jazz scene. She has been lauded as a soulful pianist. She has stated that this recording is 'a conversation between me and the piano. It’s the story of my life that I portray through music. It’s a story about where I was born, my experiences growing up, and what I feel about the state of the world. I wanted to express how happy I am to be able to make music in my little corner of the world. ‘
The result is simply stunning original compositions performed solo. She combines music from her favorite composers (Rodgers, Porter, Jobim) with her stunning original compositions…there is ‘one’ piece, “Oceans in the Sky” that is ‘four-hands’ (with Steve Kuhn) that lights up the program.
The tracks are Colors of Blues, Into The New World, The Seasons – The Answer is… (Winter), The Story I Want To Tell You (Spring), The Days We Were Smiling (Summer), Tomorrow Is Full Of Promises (Fall) - Where Or When, Palco, Chovendo Na Roseira, My Muse, Oceans In The Sky (with Steve Kuhn), Luiza, and Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye.
Technical dexterity is always present, but the impact of the music comes from her soulful involvement in the spirit of the music. A fine new artist with an assured future. Grady Harp, June 18
