英語の発音について以前より気になっていたことが本になっている、という感じです。Native speakerの発音を必ずしも目標にする必要はなく、ある程度以上の文法をある程度以上の発音で言えばよい、そしてある程度以上というのはここれです、というこを提示してくれる本です。

ただし…私、基本理系なのですが、この本を読んでいるうちにこれはただの「あるある集」ではないのかという気がしてまいりました。統計や科学的データではなく、「日本人学生がこのように発音したら、日本人の学生はめちゃくちゃうけていたが中国人とイタリア人の学生は全く理解できていなかった」という話がたくさん出て来ます。文系の話ってこんなもんなのでしょうか。

The people leaving reviews with big words and one star are rather overzealous with their criticisms. This was one of the works which began a growing reconceptualisation of English in international uses, and considered accommodation and a few other areas that have now taken a hold in ELF research. After lots of work since, very few of Jenkins's findings have been 'disproved' in the face of growing evidence, although the tone and orientations (including those of Jenkins herself) have been modified considerably.

I find the 2 star review here saying we need to "accept plurality" a little overly critical - this book was a step in that direction, and research in this area continues to move towards more pluricentric pastures. Jenkins, and many others before and since, were preoccupied with the looming concept of standard English, and it being exported with a conjoined deficit perception of all that deviates. Countering such discourses requires a systematic approach, which has grown now, but it is a still-growing area which this book contributed to.

The field of ELF and phonology are still growing, but this book can offer very interesting insights into the debates and literature at the time, and it is still referred to in literature (but the 'core' is not really seen as being quite such a useful concept, although Robin Walker's book tries to incorporate this pedagogically).
