2nd.と3rdアルバムの合併盤でお得感があり購入しましたが、2nd.のほうの音質が聴く限りかなり悪く、例えるとドルビーoffのテープをonで聴いてしまったような、変な音量の起伏があります。これはオリジナルもそうなのでしょうか？マスタリングの問題のようにも思えますが、もしその他の盤で問題ないようなら買い直しを考えるほどです。
音楽の内容はさすが。それだけに残念でした。

もちろん数多な歌手にカバーされている名曲「Lovin' You」も収録されています。
はじめてミニー・リパートンを聴く方にオススメです。

“Lovin' You”が入った“Perfect Angel”だけでも、十分なのにもう一枚アルバムが入ったとてもお得なアルバム。出世作の“Perfect Angel”はスティービー・ワンダーのプロデュース。スティービーがミニーをいたく気に入っで実現したものです。当時の分類だと、ソウルになるわけですが、そんなジャンルにくくられることのない、良質のポップです。

余談ですが、SMAPの「ライオン・ハート」って、“Lovin' You”にそっくりだなと思うんです。初めて聞いたときはカバーかと思いました。メロディやイントロは雰囲気が似ているって感じですが、コード進行がほぼ同じに思えるんです。偶然にしては似すぎているんだけどなぁ。

Few people I can think of were in the right place in the right time as much as Minnie Riperton was in terms of presenting her music to the world. During the early to mid 70's R&B,rock,pop,jazz and blues were all blending together into this fairly young genre called funk. Not only that but this unique cross pollination as well as a sense of spiritually inclined creativity was putting the same quality back into those different genres that made it. Than came this former lead singer of the band Rotary Connection named Minnie Riperton with an unearthily rangey singing voice and the good taste to know what material it worked best with. The first album presented here is of course her best known. Unlike a lot of R&B albums even from that period this album has a lot of country-western and folky flavors to it,particularly in tunes such as "Reasons","It's So Nice (To See Old Friends)" and "Seeing You This Way". They are all excellent hybrids of down home country-rock and soul music,apparently taking a cue in the similar hybrid theory of Ray Charles a decade or so earlier. It's the presense of Stevie Wonder that add this jazzy-funk flavor to the wonderous and highly underrated "Take A Little Trip" and the title song,both easy highlites of the album. Stevie also comes in to play his harp on the journeying jazzy R&B fusion of "Our Lives". "Every Time He Comes Around" is the heavist song on this album,mining the heavy and fuzzed out psychedelic soul that finds Minnie thoroughly exploring her range from low to high and back again. "Lovin' You" is of course the tune most people know from this and it's interesting to hear her reference to her daughter Mya in conclusion of the song. "The Edge Of A Dream" has a similar flavor-that combo of folk and orchestral soul. The follow up is a totally different affair entirely. While it's a melodies and harmonics structures are as unmistakably Minnie as the previous album,the music is based heavier in funk grooves and is a lot more sleekly produced. You really hear that come to the surface in the transition from "Our Lives" to the bottom heavy,bassy "Baby,This Love I Have";you can tell time has passed between them but it seems like more than a year. The title track of the 1975 album is of course the most potent song here;it's poetic lyrics and strong rhythm certainly make it a funk classic to be had. It's one of the most romantic songs funk produced during 1975. "Inside My Love" really takes the funky smooth groove to new heights as the double entadre of the lyrics ("you can come inside me") is amply explored through the music. The remainder of the album explores songs that range from soothing to festive. The musicality and diverse sensability of that time is very much in attendance on both of these albums,as is the wonderous voice singing the songs. True what the other reviewers are true;the standards for singers from here on in did get progressively lower. Same goes for songwriting and Minnie WAS a writer:a factor all too often forgotton. There are many reasons for that. But it's better not to complain than to listen to this and,just maybe one will catch the spirit and raputurous interest in the music that people such as Minnie were deeply committed to in her all to brief lifetime.

I was captivated by Minnie Riperton's voice the first time I heard her singing "Lonely Girl" under the alias of Andrea Davis on Chicago's WVON 1450 AM radio station in 1966. Her vocal performance is so convincing I still feel the pain, desperation and yearning of loneliness each time I play that song, just the same as the first time I heard it. Moving forward in this musical adventure I encounter Rotary Connection. The two major reasons I enjoyed this group are Minnie's extraordinary solos, duets, background singing, and the fantastic producing and arranging of Charles Stepney. Continuing on I responded to Ms. Riperton's invitation to "Come To My Garden" (her first solo album) where I was personally serenaded ("It was just my imagination, running away with me"), exquisitely produced and arranged by Charles Stepney. Forty years later her first solo album release has the same effect on me each time I listen to it. As I "Ease on down the road" I meet a "Perfect Angel" who I imagine is sweetly singing just for me as she guides me on wonderful "Adventures In Paradise". Minnie Riperton continues to captivate me with her voice of intimacy, warmth and comfort. The singing, songs, production and arranging, and sound recording make this two for one CD compilation a perfect adventure.

I, like a lot of people was introduced to Minnie Ripperton's music by hearing the classic "Lovin' You" and by hearing another of my fav singers, Teena Marie rhapsodize about Minnie's voice and songwriting talent. It's a shame that younger generations of singers don't appear to know more about this phenomenal vocalist - she sings effortlessly and beautifully - no riffs or runs to prolong vocals, just straight out singing from her heart (singers in this era who remind me of Minnie are Jill Scott, Norah Jones, Lizz Wright, Puff Johnson and Amel Larrieux).

Minnie was a true artist whose interest in music ran the gamut from opera to rock to r&b/pop. Her Chess Years album displays her early rock influence while in a group. As you listen to her songs (all of which she co-wrote with her husband or Stevie Wonder) you hear a woman who took risks with her music and in my opinion, never failed.

These two albums are my personal favorites of Minnie's all too short career - sadly her life was cut short by cancer. There is truly not a bad song in the bunch and for the price of one cd, you're getting 2 amazing albums.

Standout tracks to me: Take a Little Trip, Every Time He Comes Around, Baby-This Love I Have, Minnie's Lament, Alone in Brewster Bay & Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down....of course the better known: Lovin You, Inside Each Other & Perfect Angel anchor albums that deserve 10+ ratings on their own.

Minnie Riperton is not well served by compilations - her versatility means that most collections offer snippets from different stages of her career and end up sounding uneven and disjointed. A much better idea is to get this bargain CD, containing her 2 best albums in their full. Perfect Angel is simply brilliant - one of the best soul albums of the 70s. You will be amazed by both the beauty and range of Minnie's vocals, and the diversity of the music. My favourites are the rocky Reasons, Stevie-penned and influenced Take A Little Trip, the jazzy Seeing You This Way, and the almost singer-songwriter It's So Nice (To See Old Friends). Given it also includes the exquisite Loving You, it is a real gem. Follow-up Adventures In Paradise has a much more uniform jazzy feel and sound, but also a great set of songs. Buy it, you will forever be in love with the amazing talent that was Minnie Riperton.
