You have to know that Maroon 5 are all about pop. This is what they excel at, this is what they do. It is safe to say that the band has been relatively generic from the start. I mean, when "Songs About Jane" was released in 2002 it was not all that different from, say, Train. So they have gradually become more and more produced, and less and less acoustic. Adam Levine is their best asset. He is a very good singer, but the rest of the band, well, the type of music they adhere to could easily be made today by any number of up and coming new artists. Their identity rests solely upon Adam Levine's vocals. His voice is distinctive enough to be recognizable, but not so unique as to add character and depth to the identity of the band.
This band grew up together in Los Angeles, which is a far cry from, say, U2, who developmentally are similar, but musically and lyrically, far more poetic and advanced than Maroon 5 could ever hope to be. And that's my throw down to this band--I challenge them to make more interesting music. Each of their albums is different from the others, but yet they all sort of lack an identity. They are well crafted, yet not fully rewarding experiences.
And so we have "Overexposed" which sums up the band--overplayed, and Adam Levine judging on "The Voice"--overexposed. A joke, but so true at the same time. And this continues the trend set by 2007's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long." That slick, overproduced, bubblegum pop sound that has literally highjacked any originality over the past five years or so. Yes, Maroon 5's last three albums sound like they could have been made with all samples and no musicians. You know I just reviewed Rush's latest release, and those guys have a musical identity. You can tell it's Neal Peart pounding away on the drums, or Geddy Lee thumbing away on the bass guitar, or Alex Lifeson struming the electric and acoustic guitars. They are unique and distinct. The same can't be said for Maroon 5. They are a product. They sound like a producer came in and pushed some buttons and out popped "Overexposed". And worse yet, the band is already rumored to be working on their next album! With such a quick turnaround I wonder if it will be half-baked ideas.
At any rate, "Overexposed" has some good songs on it just like all the rest of their albums, and then it's padded with filler (also like all the rest of their albums). The easily identifiable hits are front-loaded on the album with the first three or four tracks being the obvious standouts such as "One More Night", "Payphone", "Daylight" and "Lucky Strike". After that, it becomes a slush fest. "Sad" stood out only because it is a ballad that interrupts the faceless dance music found throughout the album. The three bonus tracks don't add much.
I was particularly offended by their version of Prince's 1986 classic "Kiss". The band strips the song of all its character and lethally adds an additional three minutes to the original length of the song making it a 7 minute lounge act. The Art of Noise did a much better job in 1988 with Tom Jones on vocals (much, much better). Atrocious--Maroon 5 should burn at the stake for it.
So, I give "Overexposed" three stars--above average, but just barely. They really need to go back to the drawing board and realize that they do not need to make manufactured pop. They could really stretch themselves and pick a producer that would be a curve ball like Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Ric Ocasek, Billy Corgan, Jack White, Butch Vig, William Orbit, Fatboy Slim, Will.I.Am., Timbaland, Bob Rock, or David Byrne. That would be interesting. I know they used Robert John 'Mutt" Lange on their last album, but while he perfected The Cars, Def Leppard, Starship, Bryan Adams and Shania Twain, he did not do much for Maroon 5.
So, here is how "Overexposed" compares to Maroon 5's previous works:
1997 The Fourth World (as Kara's Flowers): I haven't heard this (yet)
2002 Songs About Jane: Three and a Half Stars
2007 It Won't Be Soon Before Long.: Four Stars
2010 Hands All Over: Three Stars
2012 Overexposed: Three Stars

The Criticism of Maroon 5
2015年6月23日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
Overexposed, the album in which critics and fans received mixed reviews. Yes, it is not the same old sound as you get in the old days by Maroon 5, such as the Songs About Jane days, but for goodness sake, every band goes through an evolution sooner or later. For good or bad we don't know. Maroon 5 has showed no sign of slowing down to create quality work. This CD supports it. Each song has a catchy rhythm to it that it is nearly impossible to go through the entire album without getting a single song stuck in your head as an earworm. Will your opinion differ? Of course. Each person has their own preference in the sound of music. Most don't like this new poppy sound, I don't mind. Isn't this what fans are for? To support the band's every decision they make? No one ever criticized Taylor Swift from changing into the pop world from country. But does that mean there were no complains? Nope. Every decision you make you run into someone with something else to say. It's our opinion. Yes it's true that it only sounds like Adam Levine is the only one in the band, but hey, the other band members are still there, music is music. Therefore, I recommend the Overexposed CD, you may not like it, or you may. I know I sure liked it. Liked every single song at that. Give it a go shall you?

A Very Big Risk

It is crazy to believe that 10 years ago the world was introduced to a new innovative sound in music know as Maroon 5. Since then, this quintet has been one of the true staples of fantastic music in a world that is currently lost to pop, meaningless music. Little did I know that I was going to be surprised with Maroon 5's 4th release earlier than anticipated.
The best way to describe `Overexposed' is imagine if the song `Moves Like Jagger' had 10 bastard children. Now, I am by no means saying that this album is terrible, but it is just not Maroon 5. The past three records that they have given us are soulful and beautiful, a true breath of fresh air next to the mainstream we are with today. Now, they have officially joined that mass collective and gave us an extremely poppy and catchy album that makes me wonder why. There are some hints of the old Maroon 5 soul in this album, with songs like `Sad' & `Beautiful Goodbye'. Also the deluxe edition comes with 3 great bonus tracks including a truly original recreation of Princes' hit `Kiss'. The rest of this album is just pop music taboo that easily sucks you in and makes you listen to the songs over and over again because you just can't get them out of your head. When I first heard `Harder To Breathe' I will admit I was not a fan, but the rest of `Songs About Jane' was just so amazing they grew on me. Again, the songs on `Overexposed' are not terrible, but knowing where Maroon 5 came from, I hope I don't end getting pushed away from them.
I don't know why Maroon 5 needed to head in this direction. I doubt it is for relevance, because they have been ever since they emerged onto the scene. Whatever message they are trying to send, I don't like it and I am hoping that this new sound they are giving us isn't permanent.

I read some not so positive reviews about this CD before I purchased, but I'm SOOOOO glad I didn't let those reviews stop me from making my own determination. Sometimes music isn't always about what you're used to, or what accolades the past music has received, but THIS is what music is all about, IMO. I've listened to this to and from work, at work (when no one is around - wink, wink), and it's filling up my house right now. There's nothing boring about this CD. Every song has it's own beat, it's message, while it may not be deep and life changing for some, I find that I'm moving to every song. I catch myself grooving in my car on my way to work, and if I were to get stopped - it would definitely be for "distracted driving" (LOL) I sure wouldn't complain if I were standing 'in the middle of Hollywood Blvd' while Adam 'wipes my eyes.' I bought this CD for one song, initially - "One More Night" but that has quickly changed. If you can't relate to "Sad" at one point in your life than you're either arrogant or you're too young to understand. My new favorite! Did I mention I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this CD? Give it a try and just let it play!

? No, but then
It Won't Be Soon Before Long [CD/DVD] [Deluxe Edition
] wasn't either - that was a massively slick and poppy album and I adored it. So why was I reading all of these negative reviews that kept me from buying it as soon as it came out? Maybe I was worried with Jesse's departure, they had gone off the deep end like all the reviews were making it out to be. Overexposed belongs in the same catalog with all of their previous albums. Maroon 5 has from the start been the band with the stellar hooks, extremely catchy, get under your skin and stuck in your head. They've also become very known for upbeat, fast songs with more depressing lyrics - this hasn't changed either, so I'm lost where people think this has strayed so far from their formula? The main drive of Maroon 5 has always, ALWAYS, been Adam's amazing vocal ability with Jesse's keyboards a very close second. I've listed to it only once and the majority of the songs have caught my attention on the first listen, so I know with repeated listens this will easily overtake
