SUSAN COOPER is best known for her acclaimed sequence of fantasy novels known as The Dark Is Rising which includes OVER SEA, UNDER STONE; THE DARK IS RISING (1974 Newbery Honor book); GREENWITCH; THE GREY KING (1976 Newbery Award book); and SILVER ON THE TREE. Her novels for young readers also include SEAWARD and DAWN OF FEAR. She has written three books for younger children as well: THE SILVER COW, THE SELKIE GIRL, and TAM LIN, all illustrated by Warwick Hutton. In collaboration with actor Hume Cronyn, she wrote the Broadway play Foxfire and -- for Jane Fonda -- the television film The Dollmaker, for which they received the Humanitas Prize in 1985. Born in Buckinghamshire, England, Susan Cooper moved to the United States in 1963 and now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

　“Dark　is　Rising”シリーズの第1作目。普通の生活にひそむ善と悪の戦いがテーマの物語だ。派手な魔法やアクションは登場しないが、アーサー王にまでさかのぼる謎の設定、宝探し物語の興奮、謎めいた人物の登場など読み応えは充分ある。知る人ぞ知る善と悪との対決に3人のDrew家の子供達が巻き込まれる。休暇中に借りた古い家である地図を発見したことが、3人の生活を変えてしまう。危険にさらされたり、今までいい人だと思っていた人が、“悪”の側の人間であることがわかったり。周りのほとんどの人間はこの戦いの存在に気づいていないので、結構リアリティがある。ファンタジー好きにはお勧めだ。

『闇との戦い』４部作に先立つ１作として、一度は邦訳されていながら長らく絶版し、このほど再刊された『コーンウォールの聖杯』の原著。
４部作ではちょっといやな感じで出ていたDrew家三兄妹弟の、聖杯探しの冒険、、、というよりは古文書片手に田舎で謎解きする話。
コーンウォールなんてのんびりした田舎の話かと思って油断していたら、意外と展開は起伏に富んでいて結構楽しめます。
けっこう悪役が間が抜けていて（特にウィザース妹。憎めない悪役のお約束の限りを尽くしている感も否めません）可愛い気がしたりも。
もう４部作を読んだ記憶も朧なのですが、日本語で読んでなお達成感があったのですが、これはもうちょっと低年齢層向けらしく、思ったよりも読みやすかったです。日本語版も持っているのですが、日本語で読むより面白く感じました。
さてPendragonの復活はあるのかどうか、続きを読まなくては…。

子供向け聖杯（擬似）ヴァリエーション

「まぼろしの本、ここに復刊！」と帯に大きく記されている。聖杯伝説（アーサー王物語）は大好きだが、本書ならびにその続編の存在は知らず、勉強不足を恥じつつ本書を手に取った。
大きな期待を持ちつつ読み進めた本書だったが、残念ながら期待はずれに終わった。「聖杯」は子供たちの「悪との対決」の単なる「きっかけ」に用いられているに過ぎない。マーリン（？）らしいおじさんの姿もまったく魅力的ではなく、また子供たち（三人兄弟）の性格に必然性もなにもなく、読んでいて違和感ばかりを感じる。
簡単に言うのなら、「子供向けの勧善懲悪物語」といったところか。一応は聖杯伝説に敬意を示して（？）、あとに繋がる物語を予感させようとしているけれど、それも本書レベルだと「続きを書いて売ればいいのにと思ったのです」なんていう作者のエクスキューズが聞こえてきそう。
アーサー王の世界を味わいたいのだと思う人にはまったくお勧めできない本になっている。

コーンウォールの田舎町にやってきたジェーン、サイモン、バーニーの３兄弟はさっそく滞在していた館内の探検を始める。そこで見つけた古ぼけた一枚の紙。絵文字か？地図か？メリイ叔父の助けを借りながら始まった３人の探索にのびる執拗な闇の手先･･･。
「闇の戦い」シリーズのファンが待ち焦がれていた本書は長年絶版になっていたが、読者の熱い要望にこたえてようやく復刻されたもの。闇のシリーズの入門編ともいうべき本書を読めば、また闇のシリーズを読みたくなってしまう。

I first read this as a child and have been waiting for a re-release of the series with the same cover. This is a fantastic book which carries a timeless quality despite being written in the seventies. Even as young adult this still manages to scare me and is an excellent tale of good vs evil with an innocent yet realistic feel. I would thoroughly recommend this for ages 12-15, especially with the lovely new matching cover designs!

As it was Christmas I decided I needed a good book to read for dark nights so started with The Dark is Rising which I had read in my childhood. Enjoyed it so much I then bought the remaining books. Over Sea Under Stone is a great book, just as vivid and imaginative as ever. I know readers may compare it to Harry Potter and maybe be a little disappointed, but even today this series hold their own even after 30 plus years. Am now on last book Silver on the Tree and will be sorry my journey with the forces of the Dark and the Light has come to an end. By the way if you decide to read the books, don't watch the film - it's nothing like the books and you may well be disappointed.

I first read this book many years ago, and the follow up books that make up the "Dark is Rising Sequence". I think these books are perhaps the best series I ever read. Certainly they are the best young adult series. The series is a timeless wonderful masterpiece.

This book is - in my opinion - possibly the weakest of the series. But that is not really a criticism. This book is still wonderful, exciting, fast paced classic treasure hunting adventure. Three children on holiday in Cornwall with their parents and a mysterious uncle discover an ancient treasure map lost in a secret room in the house they are staying in. The very idea is wonderfully captivating. Throw in some Arthurian legend too and it is no wonder that children and adults alike can and do love this book. This is an absolute classic.

Re-reading it, I noticed a few things that irritate me as an adult reader (although I did not care when I was younger). One such thing is the slightly Enid Blyton feel, where the adults can miss the obvious and thus the kids solve all the mysteries. However, some of that is explained in later books - and where it is not explained, it does not really ruin the story.

I highly recommend this book and even more highly recommend the rest of the series. Well written, wonderfully imagined and perfectly set with good characterisations, an engaging plot. I have read all this series several times. Once again, part of the best series I ever read.

A very well read version of this classic story.
My family was becoming frustrated with the massively condensed audio versions of books, and this one seems to be unabridged.
A complete delight, making a six hour car journey not exactly fly by, but at least made it more bearable.
We'll buy the next one in the series for the next time we have a long journey to make !

Quick note about the book if you haven't read/listened to it before
It's a very good prologue to the Dark is Rising series, written several years before the other books, it is aimed at a younger audience than the others, although older children (and adults!) will still enjoy it as a taster to the sequence.
