I loved this book. Simply loved it. With that said, I have to admit that I struggled with it when I first started reading it. It was just a day or so after the horrific Newtown shootings, and it's not really a spoiler to say that on the opening pages of this book, there is an incident with a gun at a school. While the event portrayed in the book is not as serious as Newtown, I had to set it aside in order to read this book fairly and without my own anguish coloring my view of the book. Boy, am I glad I picked it up again.
The story follows Carolyn Jenkins, a middle-class suburbanite who finds herself in her first year of teaching in an underprivileged school outside of Washington, D.C. Like many teachers, myself included, she gets into the education gig with idealistic dreams of changing the world. This book chronicles the challenges she faces in pursuing her goals, including culture clashes, racial politics, and class warfare. In the midst of this, Shoop also deftly manages to weave a romantic (and hilarious!) thread throughout, as Carolyn faces the reality that love may sometimes not be enough, especially when family gets involved.
Overall, I thought that the theme of the book was about growing up, including taking all that stuff you learn on paper in college and realizing that you may have to throw it out and wing it. I found myself laughing out loud in some parts and tearing up in others. I could not put this book down and am really glad that I had a rainy Saturday to enjoy reading it. Shoop states in the Afterword that she drew heavily on her own experiences in education for the book, and the authenticity of her experiences shines through. This is a strong recommend for pretty much anyone, but especially for young women starting out on their own, and, of course, for teachers.
Disclosure: I review every book I read and this was no exception. I received no compensation for this review; nor did the author solicit it. However, I must note that I received an advanced copy of this book because I am related to the author.

Love and Other Subjects (English Edition) Kindle版
**2013 Independent Publisher Book Award, Silver Medalist--Best Fiction--Mid-Atlantic Region**
**2013 San Francisco Book Festival--Finalist**
For every woman who wonders if she chose the right career…
In Love and Other Subjects Carolyn Jenkins strives for two things—to be the greatest teacher ever and to find true love. She’s as skilled at both as an infant trying to eat with a fork. Carolyn’s suburban upbringing and genuine compassion for people who don’t fit effortlessly into society are no match for weapon-wielding, struggling students, drug-using colleagues, and a wicked principal.
Meanwhile, her budding relationship with a mystery man is thwarted by his gaggle of eccentric sisters. Carolyn depends on her friends to get her through the hard times, but with poverty-stricken children at her feet and a wealthy man at her side, she must define who she is. The reality of life after college can be daunting, the road to full-fledged adulthood long and unscripted. Can Carolyn take control and craft the life she’s always wanted?

It's been a long time since I stayed up until 4 a.m. to read, but that's what happened when I picked up Love and Other Subjects. I couldn't put it down. Kathleen Shoop has great characters, an engaging and believable story, and a way with words. I loved this book.
Carolyn is working in a high-risk public school with challenging students and the devil in disguise as a principal. Boy could I relate. Every one of Ms. Shoop's school scenes brought back memories and rang true for me. I was once twenty-three-year-old Carolyn, and believe me, Kathleen Shoop nailed it. Right down to the caring janitor to the snarky school secretary. Her portrayal of the challenges of teaching high-risk students, the doubts of a first-year teacher, and the misuse of power by school principals is true to life.
The scenes with Carolyn's love interest, Jeep, were great too. Carolyn has a "soul slip" when she meets Jeep, AKA Money, and Shoop's writing sucks the reader right into the relationship, allowing us to feel their strong connection.
I love a book that combines humor with real-life drama and romance. Life as a teacher, friendship highs and lows, romantic ups and downs, and memorable characters made this a book I didn't want to end. H-Factor: 10+. Crap Quotient: 0. (Read the book, and you'll understand what I'm talking about.) This is chick lit at its best.

Kathleen Shoop can WRITE

At first I assumed this would be a light, "chick-lit" book... but it became increasingly interesting and at the same time a sadly authentic observation of a teacher's life in an underprivileged setting. Having taught in an inner-city school, I could certainly identify with that. The book had its laugh-out-loud moments and held my interest, particularly in the second half. Carolyn, the protagonist, is very insecure and disorganized. The book ended on a feel-good, upbeat note.

A Wonderful, Engaging Story

As an editor and writer, I find it harder and harder to get lost in a good book; I just can't turn off my inner critic. With Love and Other Subjects, however, it was easy. I was drawn into the story on the first page and kept reading because I was enjoying myself. I liked Carolyn Jenkins, the protagonist. I liked her friends. I understood her fears. I sympathized with her confusion about starting a new career and ending a less than ideal relationship. I wanted to see how she resolved things.
Shoop has done a great job with this book. She's created complex characters who stay with you even after the book is done, spot-on dialog, and just enough twists in the plot to keep a reader going. It's an easy read because the story is good and flows seamlessly. If you want to treat yourself to some relaxing and absorbing fiction, this is a perfect choice.

A little bleak at times

This really isn't much of a romance but it has some interesting story lines. The h is teaching a difficult group of kids and trying to find her way in the teaching world. Her principal is a bit of an ass and so they have a number of run ins. The h meets the H one night in a bar and they chat for hours. She takes down his number but loses it and they only meet up again some weeks later. They slowly begin a relationship but that hits a major obstacle when she meets his weird family. We truly don't read all that much about the romance but rather about the school, the h's friends and colleagues and ultimately about the kids she teaches. It's not a bad story and it is different I suppose but I didn't find it as funny as some of the reviewers say it was.
