My previous setup for pour-over (I use Chemex, V60, and Kalita Wave at various times...kind of an addict) was a stovetop gooseneck or an electric Bodum kettle. In either case, I would need to use a thermometer to gauge temperature, or just boil it and hope it cools to about the 200-205 degree range when I needed it. It really was not an ideal solution for how often I do pour-over. So, I looked at some options like the Stagg EKG ($150 for the non-Bluetooth model), but as sexy as device is, it just seemed overpriced for something that could fail and fundamentally just needs to add water.
Enter the OXO model, which has a street price of around $100.00. I actually really like the aesthetics of the design - particularly the base, which is a glossy black, compact enough to tuck into my coffee cabinet, and has a flat cord that wraps twice around the inside the base (good idea, OXO!). Even better, in reviews on YouTube and by the Seattle Coffee Gear demos, it seemed to perform as well or better than the Stagg, and actually operates at a higher wattage. I think it heats to a boil in about 3-5 minutes, though that obviously varies by water volume and starting temperature.
Since the process of pour-over coffee is supposed to take around 3-4 minutes (still working on my grind size and timing), it can actually be quite a challenge to keep water at a specific temperature other than boiling for that full period of time. On the OXO kettle, you set the temperature, it beeps to alert you when the water is heated (appreciated), and then it will keep the water at the set temperature, provided you return it to the base within 60 seconds of removing it. There is also a simple kitchen timer accessible by long-pressing the "OXO" button - useful for timing your pours. The number display appears almost white in photographs, but is actually a light blue, and very easy to read.
Two additional things I REALLY like about the OXO kettle that may not be readily apparent:
(1) The last temperature you set it at saves on the device, even after you unplug it and plug it back in. HUGE. Some other units have "presets", and the OXO knob is a little too "fine" to turn all the way up from room temperature quickly, so this would have been a major annoyance to have to reset to 201 degrees, or whatever your preferred brew setting is.
(2) The thermometer inside the kettle is very accurate and extremely fast. I try not to heat more water than I need, but sometimes, I realize during the process that I'm going to need more. I've even added cold water into the unit while it is heating (I'm sure OXO advises against this for various safety reasons, so I am NOT advocating this), and the thermometer instantly displays the cooler aggregate temperature. And I checked the final temperature with a good external thermometer and it seems accurate within a degree or so.
I quick word on some of the negative reviews - this is always a concern, but it just seems like par for the course for this kind of product. All of the popular options (Bonavita, Stagg), as well as the cheaper regulated kettles, are littered with anecdotal complaints about leakage, rust, or failure of the heating components. It is impossible for me to know if those individual problems are due to bad units, misuse, or poor user maintenance. If I encounter any such issue, I would certainly update my score and review content. But the OXO unit does come with a 2-year warranty, and I feel like that is a reasonable period of time for any inherent product "defect" to show itself. For this type of kitchen product, I would be perfectly happy with a 5-10 year window of operation with regular use.
The OXO Adjustable Temperature Electric Kettle heats water faster than most of its competitors, manages to stay relatively compact for storage, and has all the key features a pour-over enthusiast would want. Highly recommended.
*update* after using this kettle for about a month, I began to have a minor problem with the lid in which the handle became loose very easily. I contacted OXO to see if I could order a replacement lid and they graciously sent me a replacement unit. Great experience with their customer service!
*September 2020 update* I've had this kettle for two and a half years now and I think it still works perfectly for my daily tea sessions! I've used descaler several times to clean the interior and have found that to be very effective for maintenance. I’ve included pictures taken after a recent descaling session. All things considered, I'm glad I have this kettle and I would buy it again if given the option to redo my kettle purchase. Looking back, I still feel impressed with the great experience I had with the OXO customer service team. I also still enjoy how convenient this kettle is in terms of quickly boiling, holding a temperature for up to 30 minutes, and displaying a timer with the press of a button. I love making tea and I love this kettle for doing such a great and consistent job.
*April 2023 update* After five years, the heating unit is now broken and will not heat anymore. RIP faithful kettle :,(

That is until this morning when I started to lift the kettle of hot water off the base and the handle came off. Appears that the spot welds failed. I called OXO customer service, the call was answered quickly, and I actually got to speak with a real customer support person, Samantha, who spoke english as her primary language. She was very helpful and simply requested I respond to her email to provide the sales receipt, photo of the problem, and serial number. She said they'd ship me a replacement, even though the kettle is out of warranty, because the "handle should not come off".
Wow, what INCREDIBLE customer service! This is why I buy OXO products and this is why you should as well. I wish other companies would follow OXO's model. I heartily recommend this kettle and OXO.

Just arrived yesterday, and it _may_ explode or leak or blow up the breaker panel... but it’s been perfect so far. I use it for making coffee with an AeroPress, for which there’s even a handy brew-timer built into the OXO. I’m not sure AeroPress was a specific design goal, but it may as well have been. It’s a cool feature, it’s handy to use, and I’ll use it.
On top of that, I get a fast-heating kettle that nails the temperature within a degree (according to Coffee Geek, it tended to be a degree over the set temperature. I can live with that.) I also appreciate that there are no plastic parts In contact with the water... it’s all stainless-steel in the pot, save a tiny silicone ring around the thermostat probe.
As you’ll read in other reviews, it’s very nice to use, the handle’s comfortable, it’s nicely balanced when pouring, and the gooseneck spout pours accurately.
It will leak from around the lid (as will any pot I’ve ever used) if you turn it up too quickly when it’s full. So don’t do that.
I noticed some comments that the temperature control-knob should’ve been wrapped in silicone, but what-the-frock-ever. It feels fine to me, and I love the simplicity of the single control knob. All the functions depend on turning the knob or clicking on the center.
The well-lit and easy-to-read emperature and function indicators are blacked-out entirely when not in use. A lit ring around the base of the knob lights up and flashes depending on the current function, and there’s a not-alarming 2-beep tone that goes off when the water reaches its set temp. It then will allow the pot to be removed for pouring and if replaced within time it will keep the remaining water at that temperature for 30 minutes. That’s perfect for my second cup.
The tongue-shaped bezel that surrounds the knob has no seams or detents to collect dust or allow water inside. Even the power cord, longer than my Capresso’s, feels high-quality and is on the heavy-duty side, which I very much like. Strangely, there are two half-circles protruding a millimeter or so from the base on each side under the pot. These cause the base to rock annoyingly. There are no rubber feet on the bottom of the base to add stability, so I put a rubber-band under the tongue/control knob part. Not worth removing a star, but puzzling.
While there’s a very handy timer for brewing coffee or tea, there’s not timer to set for hot water to be ready when I wake up, nor is there a clock. I was used to that on my old Capresso machine, but then again, it took much longer to heat the water and didn’t get the water as hot as the OXO does. It’s fast enough that I don’t need to set it ahead of time.
All-in-all, this device seems very well-made and thoughtfully designed. I can only say that I recommend spending the money. It’s not cheap, but I keep these things for over a decade and it’s worth getting one that will last.
