Managed to get a 240GB refurbished for $160, the bigger programs on my PC like 3ds Max open atleast twice as fast ( and i'm sure for those who have it know that it takes its sweet time to load up )
As a tip, don't play with raid unless you know what your doing, I corrupted my original hardrive and had to reformat
If your going to run this side by side with another hardrive and you hooked it up properly but one doesn't show, you need to go into disk partioning tool and create a new simple volume/assign it a drive letter
SSD is a very visible performance upgrade (operating system should diffidently be installed on it)
One final thing, your motherboard may or may not use all the potential of 6 gb/s, mine uses 3 gb/s, unfortunate but it's still extremely fast.
So everything worked great for the first couple months of use. Then all of the sudden I noticed freezes and bsod, neither of which I had ever gotten on this system before. I started researching the issue and realized that this ssd is the cause. OCZ put out a new firmware in Oct 2011 (ver 2.15) which supposedly fixes the issue for many people (not all, look at their forum) however there's a catch... they cap the write speeds to ~300Mbps versus the previous and advertised ~500Mbps. Since the 500Mps mark was one of the reasons most of us purchased this ssd versus a competitor, do yourself a favor and research this matter on OCZ's forums and see if there is a newer firmware fixing all these issues before you buy it, or just buy a competing albeit possibly slower but more reliable ssd.
Arrived, immediately installed on my macbook pro 17"2011, format to os x journaled, install with original mac os x installation disk, INSTALLATION FAILED <- 1st bad sign
Restart, format again but this time zero out partition, installation success, wow boy i'm glad, I thought, this is it the moment I've been waiting for 10 seconds boot time and all those godly speed.
Restart, 1 minute in, 2 minute in, black screen nothing, THEN, os x welcome screen appear, WOOHOOO, 4 seconds into the welcome screen beach ball, WHILE that video is still playing, 5 seconds, video fast forwarded to end.
on the welcome screen, choose country, put name, etc, every tab takes 1 minute beach ball to get throughout.
FINALLY, got through to desktop, first order of business, open safari to test, beach ball 1 minute, omg
google some more issue with beach ball, people suggest resetting pram and smc.
Reset pram, wow blazing fast boot up time, maybe 5 secs. Reset SMC, boot up 2 minutes.
Okay, doesn't stop here, think think think, okay maybe time to upgrade os version. Upgraded to OS X lion
KERNEL PANIC, restart, KERNEL PANIC, restart again, KERNEL PANIC, restart, got through, try a little browsing with safari 5 minutes, KERNEL PANIC.
Format drive, put it nicely in the box, shipping this 500$ jun*k back to amazon
Whoever said this is good investment, here is an advice, invest your money on something else.
Anyway, please do buy the drive if you're looking for something to occupy your time with, because I guarantee you, for a 500$ price tag, if you're looking for a stress, here is your solution.
Don't even bother posting on ocz forums regarding 17 macbook pro 2011 with vertex 3, I posted mine and in an hour, poof, gone like a fairy, thanks ocz
So what now? add this jun*k to cart and feel the best 500$ experience of your life, even a 120$ drive can be installed within 30 minutes, this one took 7 hours and still doesn't work.
WOW, and guess what, this is my first amazon review i've ever written and I am so frustrated by this drive that i'm writing this review on my mbp 17 2011 running the damn drive, as fast as I could before KERNEL PANIC.
What is the point of selling a 500mbps w/e speed when it DOESN'T WORK, might as well just put 1000mbps so everyone will buy it.
GOAL!!!!!! Kernel panic..
This 240gb max iops, is my second drive, it took 2 hour to install OS X lion VS 30 min on tradtional HDD. After booting, it has been constantly beach balling.
OCZ needs to not only improve its quality control but also provide a mean to upgrade the firmware on a mac system. Mac is over 10% of the market but there are a huge number of SSD buyers from mac community.
It's very important for us to install a reliable ssd into my customers computers, after all they pay premium to go ssd but not at a compromise in quality and reliability.
After wasting 3 days, and my personal business down for 3 days, im switching to intel 510 256gb ssd.
Good bye OCZ here comes intel for their reliability.
