The Grammy-nominated, twenty-something, pop-classical phenomenon's fourth studio album is an expertly accomplished entry to the holiday marketplace. Noël tackles the familiar sounds of holiday music with a charmingly eclectic array of guest vocalists and a wide range of material. The songs range from the sacred to the secular, while Groban--buoyed in spots by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra--soars in his duets with Brian McKnight, Faith Hill, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There's even a song with a gospel choir directed by Kirk Franklin. Produced yet again by crossover maestro David Foster, the arrangements never overwhelm the songs. Groban's smooth and supple vocals can be hard to categorize--seeing how his range is somewhere in-between a high baritone and a low tenor--but he always finds and emphasizes the emotional core of these songs. And whether they have origins in pop or classical music seems not to matter. The addition of messages from troops stationed in Iraq on top of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is undeniably heart-wrenching, while the album's highlight is its most spare song, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," which finds Groban alone at his piano, sounding very much like some kind of angel. --Mike McGonigal

レコード盤でジョシュのクリスマスソング、かなり良いですね！
ジョシュの歌声は、歌い上げる声、優しく歌う声、それぞれの声がより生々しく耳に伝わり、
厳かな曲、心和らぐアコースティックな曲、それぞれのバックトラックの楽器や演奏の美しさも際立っている。
勿論主観ですが、総じて良いMIXとカッティングだと思う。
心の奥まで、隅まで染みわたる名盤の魅力が倍増しています。

IF you know & love the always Special voice of JG, along with most of if not all his chosen songs to record, you'll certainly be impressed with this Outstanding Xmas Release from 15-18 yrs back. I/we keep a sizeable mini-library of 'Best' Xmas recordings of past 80 yrs & this certainly fits right in.

Josh Groban has such a lovely voice, so gentle and reassuring. He has smartly structured his career and grown into a consistent musical star with the help of his mentor, producer and arranger David Foster. This holiday set meets all the expectations. "Silent Night" floats on an arrangement of strings, angelic choir from Magdalen College in Oxford and Josh's voice trembling softly at one point then rising in anthematic triumph. "Little Drummer Boy" was one of my dad's favorite Christmas songs. Josh's version generates a bit of a throb to mirror the boy on drums with Gigi Hadid's lovely vocals contrasting with Josh's deep voice. Soldiers' voices wishing their families holiday greetings frame "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and give the song depth in the context of the Iraq war. The lovely melody of "Angels We Have Heard On High" is sweetly played and harmonized with Brian McKnight's voice proving an excellent foil to Josh's. In the middle of the CD comes a jewel penned by David Foster titled "Thankful." A new song, it is not really a Christmas song, but seems like an ideal song for Thanksgiving. To my ear, Josh comes across the most comfortable with Mel Torme's classic "The Christmas Song." The orchestration is kept to a few flourishes with acoustic guitar giving a warm intimate feel to the track. "What Child Is This?" is a lovely traditional carol that is given a quasi-new age arrangement with subtle percussion throbbing. "The First Noel" is a lovely melody where Josh, Faith Hill and choir directed by Kirk Franklin raise the roof. I enjoyed hearing Josh sing in French on "Petit Papa Noel," a sweet melody with excellent vocals by Josh. "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is a lovely carol that Josh slows a bit as he plays piano. The set concludes with a stately rendition of "O Come All Ye Faithful" with Josh's voice supported by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, "Come and behold him, born the king of angels." Josh's "Noel" is a strong CD. Enjoy!

Okay... so I began listening to the CD the day it arrived. Was working in my home office and completely enjoying Josh's rich voice when, all of a sudden, out of my happy reverie I realized that I was anticipating the next full-blown ending to the song arrangement. Took me only a milisecond to say out loud, "this is DEFINITELY a David Foster CD!" To that point I hadn't even looked at the album notes, etc. But Mr. Foster came through loud and clear, even louder and clearer than Josh. While I consider David Foster to be a very talented man, I do feel that his arrangements should never eclipse the talents of the singers he works with. And with Josh Groban, eclipsing would almost be the unforgivable sin. (yes, I'm smiling as I type that last sentiment)
As for a few of the details of the album, I was jarred beyond belief by the duet with Faith Hill. The arrangement was AWFUL in my opinion, and comparing her voice (in THIS song) with our dear Mr. Groban's is like gravel to velvet... deep dark chocolate brown velv... but I digress. Whew! (coming back to the task at hand here) The only other song that I wish had had the reins pulled back on just a tad was "O Come All Ye Faithful." While the Tabernacle Choir is outstanding when heard in person, I've never yet enjoyed any of their recordings. It's almost as if their vocal power is too big for any recording to do justice to. It's the same in this version and as powerful and lovely and full and rich and... again I digress... as Josh's voice is, even he wasn't able to overshadow the wildly dramatic arrangement and the combined vocal power of the choir. It just wasn't worthy of being included on this album.
Last but definitely not least, where oh WHERE was "O Holy Night"????????? I'll just have to have him over for Christmas this year to sing it for me. I can just see him now... sitting in my living room by the tree, gazing at me with those deep brown eyes, quietly singing those first beautiful notes ---- Sorry kids, this is one digression I'm not coming back from!

First, let me say that I am a total Josh Groban fanatic and when he is on tour I follow him throughout the country because I love him that much. For me everything Josh Groban records is stunning, and "Noel" is nearly there. Josh's voice is perfection, and the song arrangement logical and pleasing. I enjoyed "Silent Night","Petite Papa Noel" and "Panis Angelicus". His version of "Ave Maria" was good, but not thrilling as I had hoped it would be.

My personal disappointment regarding this CD centers around the utterly unpleasant, shrieking gospel singers; Faith Hill's coarse voiced and out of synch duet; and most of all I disliked the inclusion of various soldiers and kids yakking it up on "I'll be Home for Christmas". IMO it will instantly date this CD once the Iraq war ends, if ever! Speaking strictly for myself I wish that the production would have been free of this sort of bombast.

Next, although I love David Foster's work on Josh's other CDs, particularly "Awake", on this album the overblown, mega arrangements are just overwhelming, specifically on "O Come All Ye Faithful" in contrast with the intro music on "Silent Night" which was superbly "spatial", clear and sparse and created a sense of standing in quiet reverence while looking at a starry night. It was entrancing until the mega arrangement came in and blew away the moment. I cannot give this CD a 5 star rating although I will always give Josh Groban a Gazillion Stars Plus for the exquisite quality of his voice. He towers as a GIANT over other popular singers in the current music market. Every concert that I have attended was sold out and a total lovefest for Josh. That tells it's own story of how much he is revered worldwide.
