Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933) is one of Japan's most beloved writers and poets, known particularly for his sensitive and symbolist children's fiction. 翻訳者の原作への理解が深くて良い

宮沢賢治の難解な物語を見事に翻訳した３作品収録の洋書だった。

海外では日本では文庫版形態に相当するのを「ペーパーバック」というのですが（日本と異なり、「ペーパーバックライター」は、日本のライトノベル作家の位置づけに近い感じでしょうか）、これ、都内の新宿にある大型書店さんで買ったものです。
収録されているのは「よだかの星」、「シグナルとシグナレス」、そして「銀河鉄道の夜」。
いずれも日本では絵本にもなっていますし、文庫版で大人向けとしても出ている代表作３作が収録されているのですが、この洋書のほうは、子供向けに簡易版になおされているものを翻訳したものではなく、まったく新潮文庫から発売されているレベルの、大人が読んでも難しい原作本のほうで、見事に宮沢賢治の物語の世界観を掴んで翻訳されていることに驚いたものでした。

特に、難解を極めるといわれる最たるものともいえる「銀河鉄道の夜」ですが、新潮文庫では初稿から有名な第四稿まで全収録されたものが出ていますが、こちらの洋書では、よく知られている長編「第４稿」のものが翻訳されて掲載されてます。

しかも前書き（Preface)などを読むと、よく宮沢賢治をご存じだなというくらいに、宮沢賢治が生前のうちに作家、または子供向けの童話作家や詩人として世間に知られることがないうちに、若くして亡くなっていること。

また、宮沢賢治がよく用いた「イーハトーブ」とは何なのかということなど。
日本人でも説明できるかどうかという「イーハトーブ」まで正確に理解されていたあたりも驚きです。

そして、「銀河鉄道の夜」は単に親しい友達との永遠の別離を描いたものではなく、宮沢賢治にとり、人生において彼に大きな影響を与えた「親友」の存在がいて、その彼と、道をいつしか違えることとなり、共に目指した「夢」は消え失せ、親友との決定的な「決別」は、まるで死別したかのような苦しみを体験したという、これがベースになって書かれた作品で、それゆえに複数の「銀河鉄道の夜」という原稿があり、中でも初稿と第４稿が有名で、最も日本で有名なのは「第４稿」でといったことまで書かれていたため、ちょっと普通の翻訳家とは思えないなと思ったので、７歳ごろ日本から転勤をきっかけに英国に来て以降、そのままずっと英国に在住している女友達にこの本を翻訳した人物を聞いてみたところ、日本文学研究がご専門でもあり、特に思想的な面などからも宮沢賢治に興味をもっている研究者でもある、そういった人の翻訳された本だったことを知りました。

偶然手にしたとはいえ、良い本に巡り合ったものです。

The book contains three stories, by far the longest being Night on the Galactic Railroad which is also the story for which I bought the book. Having come across many references to the story in various light novels and anime had made me curious. It was very much a dream-like sequence of events on a train trip along the river of stars. The imagery was beautiful, a bit more ethereal then in the a similar dream story of Alice in Wonderland. It also has a darker undertone as the astute reader quickly realizes. The other two stories are more traditional short stories, a fable about the nighthawk and about two sign posts next to a train track (all three involving stars). All in all, an intriguing short read.

I love the writing of Miyazawa Kenji, and have since I first discovered a translated poem and the kindle version of "The Milky Way Railroad," translated by Joseph Sigrist and D.M. Stroud. This translation, by Julianne Neville, tells the same story, but is quite different in minor details. I don't know (not speaking or reading Japanese) which is the more accurate translation. The setting of Giovanni's home is entirely different between the two, with the kindle translation giving more detail about the scene than this translation does. Having read both more than once, now, I prefer the Sigrist and Stroud version. Nothing against the Neville translation, but the earlier one just flows more smoothly for me, possibly a prejudice on my part for being familiar with it for several years now.

That aside, I also very much enjoyed the other two stories, "The Nighthawk Star" and "Signal and Signal-less." I had not read either before, and they were very much in what I think of as the Miyazawa style. Both of them have the underlying theme of his dislike of social prejudice and egotism. They also have the "other-worldliness" that he is a real master of, somewhat similar to certain writings of George McDonald. It is a style that very few are good at, but Miyazawa is definitely a master. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys extremely well written fantasy (of the Little Prince type, not Conan the Barbarian).

So I’ve been looking for an English translation of night on the galactic railroad for the longest time. I’m talking about around a year because of this one song I’ve been listening to. They reference it a lot so after trying to find it I finally found this copy. The cover is beautiful and not to mention it’s very small, so I can easily put it in my tote bag to read on breaks.
