This story, about a woman who had been in a psychiatric hospital for 9 years after having an illegitamate baby, was discharged as the hospital was closing. She had almost nothing except some cast-off clothing, a room and a
menial job to go to. There was no mention of any follow-up care, support or medical care. She was given a bottle of pills in case she needed them and that was it! Even back in the 60's , the era in which it seems to have been set , there must have been at least some support for discharged patients after 9 years in an institution. Even prisoners have someone! She had a gobby landlady who had been told her complete history along with her workmates and all the other residents of the house she was in . Had she been a less strong character she would not have survived.
She actually coped quite well, and the story ticked along; nothing much happened outside ordinary living and the story degenerated into farce when a supposed serial murderer in her area took a fancy to her. I can't reveal the ending but it was quite obvious what the ending would be almost as soon as the killer was mentioned -that happened in the taxi on her way from the hospital to the boarding house!!
Not a book I'd recommend. Poor spelling and grammar didn't help!

Night Corridor: 2nd Edition 2020 (English Edition) Kindle版
After nine years in Bayshore mental institution, once called the lunatic asylum, Caroline Hill is finally being released.
There will be no one to meet her. Her parents who brought her here…are dead.
They have found her a room in a rooming house, a job washing dishes in a restaurant. She will do fine, they said. But no one told that women in St. Simeon are already dying at the hands of a vicious predator. One, an actress who lived previously in her building.
And others.
And now, as Caroline struggles to survive on the outside, she realizes someone is stalking her.
But who will believe her? She's a crazy woman after all.
Then, one cold winter's night on her way home from her job, a man follows and is about to assault her when a stranger intercedes.
A stranger who hides his face and whispers her name.

Fairly basic story, not well written.

Reading this book, I thought it must be a first novel, self-published on kindle. But no, it has very good reviews at the end, to my complete astonishment. The story is okay, but not particularly imaginative and predictable in places. But the book is in dire need of a good editor: I can't understand how so many punctuation errors have slipped through the net, as well as several very basic mistakes, such as a grey car which becomes green and then becomes grey again. We never do find out exactly why the heroine has been confined to a psychiatric hospital for a full nine years, although we assume it has something to do with the fact that her baby was taken away from her. The story could have been handled much better by a more able writer.

Superb Suspense Thriller

After just finishing a Thomas Hardy classic which I hadn't read since school and left me in tears I really wasn't in the mood for a contemporary thriller, however it didn't take long for Joan to get me in the mood and put me back in synch with the equally harsh world of today.
Night Corridor is a thought provoking thriller that will stir your sense of fear and your humanitarian soul. The main character, Caroline has a refreshing light side and I couldn't hide my frustration of wanting to get into the book and scream at her to call the police, which of course, she eventually does; but will it be too late? Joans work puts me in mind of some top authors ie; James Patterson, Ruth Rendell etc. She brings her characters to life and the storyline is intense and well written. Any errors others have mentioned certainly didn't spoil my enjoyment of this book which I actually couldn't put down and it kept me guessing all the way through.
A superb suspense thriller from Joan Hall Hovey. Buy it. You won't be disappointed; If you're not scared of the dark side.........

From page one I was hooked. I coukdn't wait to find out who the baddie was and how it all turned out. I really felt for Caroline and the problems she faced and admired her bravery. A very well drawn character.

Chronic Lack of Editing
2013年1月20日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I only made it 27% in and had to pack it up. This is the fifth book I've read by this author and in my other reviews I often complained about grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. This one sadly takes the biscuit, though, and I wasn't prepared to carry on. Such a shame as she writes really interesting stories but ALL her books are let down by a chronic lack of proper editing.
Things such as flow which should be floe and this which replaced his. Helen Reddy was spelt as Ready too. Just totally unacceptable, I'm afraid.
