NEBADOR - the incredible journey of five young adults from poverty and oppression to respected citizenship in the wide universe ... A long line of mysterious planets, all stranger than any story, lie between the birthplace of the young crew and their destination among the stars. Each planet, and the vast stretches of space between, hold frightening dangers and wonderful opportunities. Events from twenty thousand years in the past have much to teach the new crew, but they fall into a deadly trap from which even the captain cannot find an escape. - BOOK FIVE: BACK TO THE STARS is the fifth book in the NEBADOR series. These stories are filled with wit-sharpening and skill-honing challenges - mental, emotional, and spiritual - for both the characters and the reader. It is truly a grand adventure in which the characters come to understand a beloved saying of the Nebador Transport Service: Personal power is the ability to stand on your own two feet, with a smile on your face, in the middle of a universe that contains a million ways to crush you. - This book includes the short stories "Buna's New World" by Karen Buchanan, and "First Taste of Freedom" by Katelynn Persons, winners of the early 2011 NEBADOR writing contest. - This is the PAPERBACK GLOBAL edition in 10-point type.
Born in the Mojave Desert, J. Z. Colby now lives and writes deep in a forest of the Pacific Northwest. - He has studied many subjects, formally and informally, including psychology, philosophy, education, and performing arts, but remains a generalist. His primary profession as a mental health counselor, specializing with families and young adults, gives him many stories of personal growth, and the motivation to develop his team of young critiquers and readers. - All his life, he has been drawn toward a broad understanding of human nature, especially those physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual situations in which our capacity to function seems to reach its limits. He finds fascinating those few individuals who can transcend the limits of our common human nature and the dictates of our cultures. - In his spare time, he flies helicopters and airplanes. - Karen Buchanan, 14 at the time she wrote Buna's New World, is a native of Quebec, Canada. She speaks both English and French fluently, is learning Spanish, and wants to learn German and Chinese someday. Born and raised in Portland, Oregon until the age of fifteen, Katelynn Persons now lives and goes to school in Sandy, Oregon, where she continues her journey through her teenage years. Although she is only seventeen, Katelynn finds much enjoyment in her passions for writing and theater. She'll be graduating high school in January 2012, and plans to attend Mt. Hood Community College immediately afterwards. This is Katelynn's second published piece of literature, and she hopes it won't be the last. If she isn't locked in her room typing away, you'd most likely find her with her few close friends, or out meeting new people, and trying to change the world one step at a time.
The Nebador series by J.Z. Colby is a great read for the entire family. Many topics come up in the series that are trending today as well as topics that are controversial. The author also shows the need for education and a clear head thru out the series, that the characters must need to learn. And as the reader we can also learn some of their lessons in the story, some even with diagrams to help aid in understanding.
In book 5 "Back to the Stars," the crew of the Manessa Kwi finely get to do some real space travel. Training however has not ended. they quickly learn how poor choices and bad stewardship of a planet can have a devastating outcome. Different races of people from the planet the crew is from is nothing they find out when they finally talk via video with a feathered alien. However they find out that accepting they will die in only a few days is the hardest thing they have ever done to this point.
I really like this series. There is a few things i dont totally agree with though through the story. Some of the character interaction some times seems off. For example seems lacking in conflict when i feel there should be. But in any case going along also with the storyline shows to a point why that isn't there. The characters that were chosen for a reason.
