内容紹介

On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Over the course of minutes, they would kill twelve students and a teacher and wound twenty-four others before taking their own lives.

For the last sixteen years, Sue Klebold, Dylan’s mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong? Were there subtle signs she had missed? What, if anything, could she have done differently?

These are questions that Klebold has grappled with every day since the Columbine tragedy. In A Mother’s Reckoning, she chronicles with unflinching honesty her journey as a mother trying to come to terms with the incomprehensible. In the hope that the insights and understanding she has gained may help other families recognize when a child is in distress, she tells her story in full, drawing upon her personal journals, the videos and writings that Dylan left behind, and on countless interviews with mental health experts.

Filled with hard-won wisdom and compassion, A Mother’s Reckoning is a powerful and haunting book that sheds light on one of the most pressing issues of our time. And with fresh wounds from the recent Newtown and Charleston shootings, never has the need for understanding been more urgent.

All author profits from the book will be donated to research and to charitable organizations focusing on mental health issues.

As a mother of three and a high school teacher, I was horrified by the Columbine tradegy and always wondered about the boys who carried it out and their families. School security changed as a result. So did the way teachers looked at students. This book made me think more about my own children and what is going on in their lives. Are they depressed? Suicidal? It is generous and brave of Sue Klebold to share her experience and her pain for the rest of us to learn from.
5つ星のうち 5.0 In my opinion a very honest account from Sue Klebold. 2017/5/15

Sue Klebold does not spare herself in this book. She lays bare all her fears, doubts and failures. It was fascinating to read how families of mass shooters are affected by the shooters' actions. Highly recommended.

I understand more clearly now how important it is for everyone to pay closer attention to people in crisis. And to be more aware of what's going on instead of just thinking "it won't happen to us"....

An informative read, eloquently written straight from the heart. As parents we all miss signs that all is not well with our children, despite putting every bit of our heart and soul into being the best parent we can be - I too have always believed that unconditional love would be enough - yet few of us are punished as severly as Sue Klebold was. Suicide of a child would be awful, but mass murder and suicide adds a painful guilt dimension that so obviously left Sue Klebold feeling like she had no right to grieve for a son she had loved so dearly. Her journey towards understanding why Dylan did what he did was was enlightening for those of us with brain-troubled children. To you, Sue, I believe that if Dylan and Eric never met one another, neither would have carried out the mass murder that resulted in the most awful outcome imaginable for all of the victims and their families. Perhaps I would never forgive you had one of my children been killed by your son, I don't know. But it could so very easily be me in your shoes. I wish you strength in your journey and thank you for sharing in the hope that all of us can learn.
