Antoine Brumel(c.1460-1515), a notable contemporary of Obrecht & Josquin, was a top composer in the Franco-Flemish tradition; and is historically significant as the first truly French composer to be associated with the court of Burgundy. His output was considerable by any standards, ranging over French songs of great charm, many motets, including fully-developed settings of complete psalms, and at least 16 Masses. His settings, while exhibiting great contrapuntal skill, is nevertheless the work of a composer free in spirit.
During the Renaissance, it was considered normal procedure for a Mass composition or Motet to make use of pre-existent material, and by the late 15th century, sacred music sometimes drew upon popular, folk or art songs. Antoine Brumel's Missa Berzerette Savoyenne takes its title and much of its distinctive material from a French chanson by Josquin with a text about a young man courting a shepherdess ( a song of seduction, as it were). Thus bringing into the church some of the frolicking quality and vigorous humor of the countryside. This Mass is a lucid and gripping work and it is somewhat amazing to me that a composer can base an entire Mass on a seduction song. But Brumel hides nothing for in the Kyrie the melody is clearly evident in the top line; later it is in the Tenor, but always audible. Each movement presents new ideas, and the final Agnus Dei has an unbelievable number of repetitions. As a piece of devotional music, it is questionable, but as pure enjoyment it is delightful.
The Motets, especially the Heth, Cogitavit Dominus, were the best sung on the disc, but still left a lot to be desired which was a disappointment because I have never heard anything by Chanticleer that was not perfect. My complaint herein has mostly to do with the balance of the voices, especially in the Mass. The treble sound which is produced by four countertenors could have been better sung by two. The voices of Randall Wong and Joseph Jennings and Louis Botto are usually aligned well with the other voices and blend well. It may be that the other countertenor, Steven Rickards may be the one with the voice, sounding very female, and not well-blended. However it may be that having fewer countertenors would have solved the problem. The group in addition to the 4 ct's, includes 3 tenors, 2 baritones and 3 basses. The first selection had at least one poor entrance (out of sync with the ensemble). To say that the disc is not worth hearing would be a great mistake, and I will listen to it and enjoy hearing the music of Brumel
