The big draw for buying this recording is the fact that Mr. Graffin has chosen to eschew Mendelssohn's own written cadenza and replace it with his own. How audacious! Typically when a composer includes his/her own cadenza in the published score, a performer will respect it as an important part of the composition. The Tchaikovsky violin concerto comes to mind - many performers have made minor 'tweaks' to that written cadenza, but none (to my knowledge) have completely replaced it. So the question now becomes, was Mr. Graffin's effort worth it? In my humble opinion, not really. I don't hear any major new insights into the piece from this inclusion.
And what about the rest of the recording? So-so. Very competent playing, but there are certainly more accomplished performances of these pieces.
The Schumann Fantasie is a bit of a novelty, but the Schumann concerto is now a fairly standard concerto in the repertoire. Isabelle Faust has a wonderful recording of it. As for the Mendelssohn, every single violinist of note has recorded this iconic work. This new recording will not displace your favourite, new cadenza or not.
