Joanna Cole has been creating books about the Magic School Bus for more than twenty years. She is a recipient of many awards, most recently the National Endowment for the Arts Foundation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education. She lives in Key West, with her husband.

Bruce Degen is the bestselling author and illustrator of the beloved, perennial favorite Jamberry and numerous award-winning books for children. He is also the illustrator of the highly-acclaimed Magic School Bus series by Joanna Cole.

子どもに向けて書かれた、お話を楽しみながら科学的知識を学べる
シリーズの１冊です。

Frizzle先生のクラスでは、新しく地球の内部について学ぶことに
なりました。Frizzle先生が子どもたちに宿題にしたのは、レポート
と、各自一つ石を持ってくることでした。でも翌日、石を見つけて
持ってきた生徒は本の数名。

そこでFrizzle先生は、バスに乗って、石を集めに遠足に出かける
ことにしました。Frizzle先生が運転するMagic School Busが着いた
のは、採掘場。そこで、地表からどんどん掘り進めて、地球の内部
へと進んでゆきます。

その途中、"soil", "limestone", "sandstone", "shale", "slate",
"marble"など、様々な石に出会い、学んでいきます。
ちょっとした豆知識に関する記述もあり、大人でも十分に学ぶ
ことができる本です。

日本語でもあまり目にすることがない石の種類を英語で学ぶ
ことができる本でもあります。多読用にどうぞ。

This is one of the best-selling children`s science books for good reasons. The story-text of the original series, at once humorous, engaging, and packed with information, is complemented by lively pictures, supplemented by cartoon bubbles containing thoughts and comments, and short "reports" by the students in the book. The teacher, Ms Frizzle, is an amazing Poppin-esque character who challenges her students and leads them on unbelievable fieldtrips on their one-of-a-kind school bus. Her equally fascinating wardrobe changes with the subject and situation. The students, recurring characters who reflect the multicultural nature of the US, sport varying temperaments and interests, with whom children may easily identify.
In INSIDE THE EARTH, the bus, at first, won`t start. But when it does, look out! It turns into a steam shovel; provides the students and Ms Frizzle with a new wardrobe, digging equipment; and transports them to the center of the earth, Jules Verne-style: all for the class rock collection. Along the way we learn about: rocks-- their origins and formation; you know: geology, but with the Frizzle spin.

This series of books is outstanding. Plenty of information, simply presented with plenty of pictures to entertain and educate. My kids love them. There are lots of mini-essays on various related topics in each book, which form a great introduction to both writing in full sentences and answering a question briefly but accurately. Highly recommended

Vorab, über Bildungsfernsehen:
manchmal kann man von Amerika doch noch was lernen. Schulfernsehen ist bei uns gleichbedeutend mit drögem Retro-Bildungsfernsehen mit grell-gelben Neonschriften und Menschen vor einer Tafel. In Amerika wurden in den 90ern neue Wege gegangen und eine Fernsehserie um den "Magischen Schulbus" entwickelt. Eine Lehrerin hat einen ganz besonderen Schulbus, mit dem die Kinder (etwa 3. Klasse) auf Schulausflüge gehen, die sich meist eher "ungewöhnlich" entwickeln. Mit einer Mischung aus Fantasy und Science-Fiction tauchen die Kinder im wahrsten Sinne tief in die jeweilige Materie der Folge ein und lernen viele neue Dinge. Am Ende gibt es noch eine Art kritische Selbstreflexion mit dem Medium an sich, wenn Schüler beim Produzenten der Sendung anrufen und über die Wissenschaftlichkeit der Darstellung sprechen. Großes Kino.
Insgesamt etwa vergleichbar mit dem großartigen "Es war einmal das Leben.."

Die Bücher
Vom Fernseher zum Buch ist oftmals ein beschwerlicher Weg, meist schwieriger als Anders herum, da die Möglichkeiten in dieser Richtung eher begrenzter erscheinen. Der Bücherserie gelingt es jedoch erstaunlich gut, durch eine Wilde Mischung aus Comic, Fachbuch, Notizheft und eine teils recht interessante Variation mit dem Thema Wissenschafts-Comic. Im Kino würde man sagen, die "vierte Wand" wird wiederholt durchbrochen.
Das regt die Leser zu Auseinandersetzung und Nachdenken an und verleiht dem Heft mehr Interaktion als man erwarten kann.

Inside the Earth
Eine Reise ins Innere der Erde, über Vulkane, Erdschichten, die Vergangenheit der Welt und viel mehr.

Die Sprache
Klar, es ist englisch. Aber kein wissenschaftliches Englisch. Es tauchen vereinzelte Fachbegriffe auf. Aber meine Kinder können nach 2 Jahren Leben in Tansania, wo Englisch auch nicht die Landessprache ist, alles gut verstehen.

Fazit
Eine Art Geheimtipp! Ideal für Kinder, die zweisprachig aufwachsen. Oder zur Ergänzung für Englisch in der Grundschule. Altersempfehlung: etwa 6 - 10 Jahre.

Before I started elementary school, I knew about The Magic School Bus. Important book series from Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, this collection of science adventures introduced me at an early age to many scientific concepts important to our everyday life, our world, and how objects around us work.

For each book, a different science topic. And in all of them, the same main protagonist. Mrs. Frizzle and her mysterious school bus. A machine ruined in appearance, but magical in its tools. Indeed, every time she takes her class on a field trip, the bus transforms itself and its passengers into explorers who discover the mysteries of our world. Having at their hands advanced technology and tools that would make jealous the most envious inventors, this class experiences incredible adventures where they learn new subjects; alongside us readers who discover their stories.

In this book, second volume in The Magical School Bus series, another fascinating topic to explore. After studying animals’ homes for a month, the class studies the topic of Earth; as in the rocks and Earth beneath our feet. And with the company of Phoebe, a new student who just arrived in the classroom, Mrs. Frizzle and her class explore the various rock layers that make up our planet. Through each layer, different type of rocks. Sandstone, Shale, Limestone, Basalt, Marble, and many others. A field trip that ends up with an explosive situation for the class. Giving us a much more exciting adventure for the series, though it won’t reach the drama of the space adventure two volumes later.

Through this story, we explore amazing details about our planet. Many technical terms that make this book quite a valuable companion for geology fans or science students who want to learn about our rocks, what constitutes our earth crust and what hides underneath it. And as the author Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen worked with an associate curator from the Department of Mineral Sciences at The American Museum of Natural History and a Geology Professor at Barnard College, what we get are precise informations about our Earth. Though it is a book that might necessitate multiple readings if you are using it to revise your lessons.

For the prose and story, it is told from the class’s point of view. Speaking in unison; sharing a same common voice. Alongside extra comic book bubbles where, in the illustrations, characters talk to each other.

As for the artwork, it is done in watercolours with pen, alongside colour pencils, gouache, and ink. And within each of them, we are presented the classroom, the protagonists, and their adventures. All under great illustrations that cover either the entire page, or two pages if an action occurs on a long wide scope view or if it evolves progressively (ex: the bus falling down the Earth).

Now for the book’s editions, you might have either paperback or hardcover versions, but also huge volumes that teachers can use to present to a wide group. So depending on the type of volume you want, you can check with your book store if they offer it or not. As for me, I have a paperback edition and the printing is well done. The text is printed at a proper size; easy to read for all readers. Including adults for it presents basic informations about the subjects involved and can be a good reviewer for people who might have forgotten some of their science basics. Especially for the other books that deal with big topics like astronomy, beehives, dinosaurs, water, famous scientists, etc.

In sum, this book, alongside this series, is a great success from Scholastic and its two artists. A valuable educational material alongside an awesome story to read while learning about our world.
