Definitely buy, if not for your children, then for yourself. Don't pay attention to one-star reviews, they will reflect the reviewers' religious beliefs and not the worthiness of The Magic of Reality.
What will you tell your geeky children the next time they pester you about where life came from, how the universe started and why bad things happen to us? For thousands of years the only answers we had came from myths and other made up stories, but now we have a much much better way of explaining things with science.
Dawkins' book is a stab at putting together the scientific answers to these and a few more questions, like what are rainbows and stars, how come there are so many different forms of life and so on. It doesn't cover every single question a fairly intelligent tweenager may ask, but it has a pretty good go at it.
You could say that most of it is covered anyway in school course books, but The Magic of Reality has a new angle or two.
First of all, it Dawkins precedes most scientific explanations with the corresponding myths. For example the chapter on the real causes of earthquakes comes introduced by the Japanese myth of a giant catfish. The not so hidden agenda is to show that myths, including those from the Bible, don't really explain anything and are just so stories. Don't be fooled by the apparent sympathy towards such folktales. Dawkins also shows quite clearly that some of them are not just harmless treasures of our more ignorant past but can still actively poison our minds.
Second, it comes with an added value of fantastic illustrations that are easily the book's strongest selling point. In the age of kindle, this is a book to have a hardcover copy of on your shelf.
Although it may be useful as either an introduction to science for children or a revision for older readers like me, it doesn't cover all the fields and the view of science and scientific progress is somehow simplified (but not dumbed down). For a history of science with all its naughty and nasty bits grab a copy of
A Short History of Nearly Everything
by Bill Bryson. It is also my personal opinion that it doesn't quite capture the mind-boggling awesomeness of reality the way Robin Ince did in his TED talk, but sadly Ince hasn't written it down yet.

Magic takes many forms. Supernatural magic is what our ancestors used in order to explain the world before they developed the scientific method. The ancient Egyptians explained the night by suggesting the goddess Nut swallowed the sun. The Vikings believed a rainbow was the gods’ bridge to earth. The Japanese used to explain earthquakes by conjuring a gigantic catfish that carried the world on its back—earthquakes occurred each time it flipped its tail. These are magical, extraordinary tales. But there is another kind of magic, and it lies in the exhilaration of discovering the real answers to these questions. It is the magic of reality—science.
Packed with clever thought experiments, dazzling illustrations and jaw-dropping facts, The Magic of Reality explains a stunningly wide range of natural phenomena. What is stuff made of? How old is the universe? Why do the continents look like disconnected pieces of a puzzle? What causes tsunamis? Why are there so many kinds of plants and animals? Who was the first man, or woman? This is a page-turning, graphic detective story that not only mines all the sciences for its clues but primes the reader to think like a scientist as well.
Richard Dawkins, the world’s most famous evolutionary biologist and one of science education’s most passionate advocates, has spent his career elucidating the wonders of science for adult readers. But now, in a dramatic departure, he has teamed up with acclaimed artist Dave McKean and used his unrivaled explanatory powers to share the magic of science with readers of all ages. This is a treasure trove for anyone who has ever wondered how the world works. Dawkins and McKean have created an illustrated guide to the secrets of our world—and the universe beyond—that will entertain and inform for years to come.

"I wanted to write this book but I wasn't clever enough. Now I've read it, I am"
—Ricky Gervais
“Exhilarating. The clearest and most beautifully written introduction to science I've ever read. Again and again I found myself saying "Oh! So that's how genes work!" (or stars, or tectonic plates, or all the other things he explains). Explanations I thought I knew were clarified; things I never understood were made clear for the first time. My favourite adjective of praise has always been "clear", and this book has clarity all the way through.”
—Philip Pullman, author of The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ and the His Dark Materials trilogy
“I am often asked to recommend good books on science for young people. From now on, I will not have to hesitate. The Magic of Reality provides a beautiful, accessible and wide ranging volume that addresses the questions that all of us have about the universe, separating often too-little known facts from too-frequently believed fictions. For this reason it should be a powerful resource for people of all ages, written with the masterful and eloquently literate style of perhaps the best popular expositor of science, Richard Dawkins, and delightfully illustrated by Dave McKean. What more could anyone ask for?”
—Lawrence Krauss is Foundation Professor and Director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University and the author most recently of Quantum Man, and A Universe from Nothing

Richard Dawkins has a fantastic way of taking complicated subjects and explaining them in layman's terms. You can see any number of his previous books for evidence of this. This book continues the trend but expands his scope immensely. Rather than simply focusing on evolution as he has in the past this book covers all sorts of things, from rainbows to the big bang. It's simple enough that a smart upper elementary student could work through it themselves or younger students will have no problem with a little supervision.
That in itself makes this book well worth the purchase - if only to answer those questions that arise in young minds so often - but with this book you get more. The illustrations by Dave McKean are superb and will excite the reader or clarify difficult ideas. There are even some cameos in the pictures such as Penn, Teller and Derren Brown appearing as caricatures at one point.
The pages the book is printed on (in my edition anyway) are thick and sturdy, perfect for younger fingers. If you have children, get this book - you wont regret it!

Even if this book is intended for the general public with an interest in science (newbees if you want), it is a very enjoyable reading even for those who are really into science and research. I felt like like de prequel of Sagan's "A Demon Haunted World".

Another masterpiece from Dawkins!

A perfect book for studying scientific facts and myths and how they shape our world. Easy to read and anyone can enjoy it, whether from science background or not. A must read for young children to develop critical thinking and also for adults who believe things too easily than to look for facts.

Another Great Insight into Reality

Why is reality so hard to see for the billions of us on this planet? Religion, nationalism, monarchy, racism and other fogs of thought keep us from seeing what we need to see to save Earth before it is too late. To bad there aren't more men like Richard Dawkins in positions of authority.
