内容紹介

Sarah Bradford's Lucrezia Bogia: Life, Love and Death in Renaissance Italy is the first biography of Lucrezia Borgia for over sixty years .Lucrezia Borgia - an infamous murderess or simply the victim of bad press? Lucrezia Borgia's name has echoed through history as a byword for evil - a poisoner who committed incest with her natural father, Pope Alexander VI, and with her brother, Cesare Borgia. Long considered the most ruthless of Italian Renaissance noblewomen, her tarnished reputation has prevailed long since her own lifetime. In this definitive biography, a work of huge scholarship and erudition, Sarah Bradford gives a fascinating account of Lucrezia's life in all its colourful controversy. Daughter, sister, wife and mother, Lucrezia Borgia was surrounded by wealth, privilege and intrigue. But what was the truth behind her extraordinary existence - was she a monster of cruelty and deceit, or simply the pawn of her power-hungry father and brother? 'Sarah Bradford writes with cool authority and her research in Italian archives is exemplary. No other biography is likely to bring us closer to Lucrezia' Spectator 'Bradford's forte, ever since she was a history-mad girl, is thinking herself into other lives' Daily Telegraph Sarah Bradford is a historian and biographer. Her books include Cesare Borgia (1976), Disraeli (1982), winner of the New York Times Book of the Year, Princess Grace (1984), Sacherevell Sitwell (1993), Elizabeth: A Biography of Her Majesty the Queen (1996), America's Queen: The Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (2000), Lucrezia Borgia (2005) and Diana (2007). She frequently appears on television as an authority on her biographical subjects and as a commentator on notable royal events. She is currently working on a full scale biography of Queen Victoria. She lives in London.

レビュー

Bradford's zest for this era is contagious. ("USA Today") A lively view of Lucrezia, capturing the glamour and tragedy of her story. ("The Wall Street Journal") This is also a tender and intimate account of a misunderstood and passionate woman. ("Elle")

Written in a very chatty, gossipy style which is often rather intrusive. Bellonci uses a lot of imagination to decide what Lucrezia "must" have been thinking, or doing, or feeling. In large part this is because there obviously isn't a lot of first person writings that she left behind to draw from, therefore imagination is about all there is to work with. There just isn't much in the way of facts, so aside from her imagination, she also makes a lot of assumptions (such as the idea that Lucrezia had an illegitimate child, possibly fathered by her brother or her father - yet Bellonci admits that there's no proof as to who the father might have been, if the child even existed). One of the big problems I had is that she included a lot of sentences, quotes from poems, papal bulls, etc. in their original languages - and I neither read nor speak Spanish or Italian, and my high school Latin and French is simply not adequate for translating. (Some things did get a translation, but there was enough that was not to be VERY irritating!)
One is left feeling rather bad for poor Lucrezia, however - she seemed a nice enough person who was slandered by history because the rest of her relatives were nuts.

5つ星のうち 5.0 Very interesting! 2012/5/4

I'm not quite done with the book yet, but I just have to say... I've known many historians to write biographies with such a dry style that it leaves you dozing off before the end of the first chapter. Maria Bellonci is something all-together different. She makes it interesting. The history itself, which goes in depth into the life of Lucrezia Borgia, along with her family (which is one of the most notorious in history) is fascinating. It can feel more like you're reading because you have to and not because you want to if the book is written poorly! Not the case with this book! Bellonci makes an interesting piece of history even more enjoyable! You won't regret this biography!

Also, if this doesn't satisfy your Borgia fix, try watching Neil Jordan's "The Borgias" on Showtime. It is highly enjoyable, although not as historically accurate as director Tom Fontana's version, titled simply "Borgia," which you can find streaming on Netflix. Try them out!....... Gotta love the Borgia!
5つ星のうち 4.0 Not A Casual Read But Very Interesting And Accurate. 2015/7/17

This book is filled with all kinds of interesting and factual information about the Borgia Family. The first half of the book is mostly about the Pope Alexander VI and the Borgia boys and men but it does explain a lot about Lucrezias' early life and background. The second half of the book is about Lucrezia and Ceasera The book has been throughly researched and is very impressive in its facts. That being said it's kind of a hard read, like a college book that would be useful if you were writing a paper on the Borgias. It was a little dry but I found that was so interesting that I wanted to keep reading. I did find that many times I wasn't sure who Ms. Bradford was talking about because there are so many important characters and she doesn't always make it clear who the actor is she's talking about. This isn't the easiest book to read but if you are interested in the Borgia family this is probably one of the most researched and factually accurate books you will find. It was a little slow going but very informative and interesting. I recommend it.

The book is more of a textbook, it isn't very easy to read. I have made the horrible mistake of picking this book for a school project and this was the worst possible book I could pick. it is great if you like to analyze stuff but other than that it is really sort of a horrible book. I guess it is that way since it was written in 1939, just a heads up.

A disclosure of Lucrezia Borgia as a very intelligent woman thrust into the political and religious period of the 16th century. It was a book of beautiful and brutal history and sadness, opulence and deprivation, justice and betrayal. Most of all it was the history of human beings love affairs and the lives of true spirited peoples.
