Curated by Steve Hillage and released with the full involvement of original members, legendary psychedelic surrealists Gong are the subject of a box set with the release of Love From Planet Gong: The Virgin Years 1973-75. Released to coincide with Gong's 50th Anniversary, the set covers the band's classic years in a stunning package that includes: their seminal first four Virgin studio albums plus bonus tracks; previously unreleased, multi-tracked full gigs, the complete John Peel Sessions from 1973 and 1974; previously unreleased quad Pye and Westlake mixes of You re-formatted to 5.1 surround-sound, and artwork including rare and previously unseen work by the late Daevid Allen. Under the visionary guidance of Daevid Allen, Gong raised the bar for psychedelic rock in the 1970s. The first three albums Gong recorded for the Virgin label - Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg and You - introduced the listener to the invisible mythological universe of Pot Head Pixies, Zero The Hero, The Octave Doctors and The Good Witch Yoni. Featuring sublime virtuoso guitar from Steve Hillage, Gong's intoxicating, space-rock inflected compositions such as 'Radio Gnome Invisible', 'The Isle Of Everywhere', 'Master Builder', 'Inner Temple/Outer Temple', 'Shamal', 'Flying Teapot' and 'Oily Way' are all an absolute joy to experience, remastered by original engineer Simon Heyworth and sounding as crisp and inventive as ever. 今回のBOXの副題は「The Virgin Years 1973-75」ということで「Radio Gnome Invisible」3部作と「Shamal」の4枚のスタジオアルバムのリマスター、及び同時期のライブ8枚＋DVD（「You」サラウンド音源）で構成されています。Daevid AllenとGilli Smyth脱退後の「Shamal」が含まれているのは、今回のBOXがSteve HillageとMike Howlettの手によるものであるということで納得。ライナーにその辺のいきさつが書かれているのかも知れませんが、当方英語が読めず詳しくは分かりません...
なお、この期間はAllenの意向に反してVirginが発売した「Live etc.」の音源収録時期とも丁度重なっています。ということで、今回のBOXのライブ音源と「Live etc.」との関係がどうなっているのかが気になっていました。結論を大雑把に言ってしまうと、「Live etc.」でつまみ食い的に小出ししていたライブ音源を、今回ありったけ大放出したという内容になっていると思います。

ライブディスクの内容は以下の通りです。
＜CD5＞　BBC Radio Sessions 1973-74 & Edinburgh Festival 1973/8/21 　13曲
　大半は「The Peel Session 1971-74」や「Live etc.」等で既出のもの。初出2トラックあり。
＜CD6、CD7＞　Paris - Bataclan Live 1973/5/20　18曲
　"First Time on Official CD"との表記あり。過去に出ている「Live Au Bataclan 1973」（収録時間75分）には
　見慣れない曲名が並んでいますが、同音源の拡大版（収録時間112分）です。全体を通して確認した訳ではない
　ですが、一部（冒頭のアナウンスや「Radio Gnome～」等が）カットされている模様です。
　なお、内2トラックは「Live etc.」、1トラックは「Greasy Truckers」（Henry CowやCamel等とのコンピ
　アルバムですね）にも収録されていたもの。
＜CD8、CD9＞　Roanne - Club Arc En Ciel Live 1973/8/17　14曲
　内3トラックは「Live etc.」に収録されていたもの。とは言えメドレーで長くなっているものもあります。
＜CD10＞　London - Hyde Park Live 1974/6/28　7曲
　全編今回が初出。
＜CD11、CD12＞　London - The Marquee Club Live 1975/9/9,10　14曲
　内3トラックは「Live etc.」に収録されていたもの。
なお「Live etc.」に入っていたスタジオ録音曲は「Angel's Egg」と「You」のボーナストラックとして収録されています。

バンドのメンバーは大部分が、Daevid Allen(vo)、Gilli Smyth(vo)、Tim Blake(syn)、Steve Hillage(g)、Didier Malherbe(sax,flute)、Mike Howlett(b)、Pierre Moerlen(ds)の黄金の布陣。CD5の中の74年録音分が、Pierre MoerlenとGilli Smythの代わりにRob Tait(ds)とDiane Bond(旧盤表記：Di Stewart)(vo)が参加したときのもの。また、CD11とCD12は、Daevid Allen、Gilli Smyth、Tim Blake脱退後で、Miquette Giraudy(vo)、Patrice Lemoine(key)が加入、dsはPierre Moerlen。それにクレジットにないですが、Mireille Bauer(per)も参加している筈です。従いまして、Bill Bruford や Chris Cutler がドラムを叩いている時期のものは含まれていません。

音質に関しては、元々オフィシャルな録音ですので極めてクリアで、インタープレイの迫力がダイレクトに伝わってきます。演奏内容はどれも素晴らしいのですが、個人的には1975年のMarquee Clubでのライブが特に気に入っています（Daevid Allenには怒られてしまいますけれども...）。ここでは3部作の曲とあわせて「Shamal」やSteve Hillageのソロ「Fish Rising」からの曲が演奏されており、Mike Howlettのベースはドライブしまくり、Pierre Moerlenのドラムはキレッキレ。「Fish Rising」の中の「The Salmon Song」などを聴いていると、このライブを世に出したくて当BOXを企画したのでは？と勘繰ってしまいたくなるほど凄まじい演奏が繰り広げられております。ぜひ聴いてみて下さい。

豪華なハードカバーのブックレット（60ページ超）はアルバム・アートを確りと押さえてくれており、写真やメンバーのコメントも満載（自分読めません...）。最後に各国のレコードジャケット写真が載っているのですが、日本盤については何と帯違いまで！（笑）また、これとは別に、ストーリーブック、歌詞カード、「Gong Live Etc. Family Tree」（メンバー変遷）等が載っている36ページの大きなサイズのブックレットも付属しています。

蛇足ですが...
最近（2019年11月末に）カンタベリー系アーティストの発掘ライブ音源が数種類発売されました。期待していた National Health や Hatfield & The North は想像よりも音が悪く正直ガッカリしてしまったのですが、この中にあってGongの「Norway & Germany 1974」は、まあまあの状態だと思います。Bill Bruford（一部 Laurie Allan）在籍時の演奏を聴きたい時はこちらを。

Glorious Gong Trilogy Box (and ‘Shamal’) with a royal helping of live recordings

The eagerly awaited Gong box set arrived this weekend ahead of the planned arrival date, so it was a nice surprise. Haven't been able to play all cd's in this box set (and one should savour such treasures) but so far I’m really happy.

For me, the main reason for buying this box set are the live recordings on cd's 5 - 12 as I've had the studio albums for years, even multiple copies of several of them. The exception to the rule is 'Shamal', an album made without Daevid Allen and greatly suffering from it: 'Shamal' sits firmly in dreaded progrock terrain (technique, not spirit dominating) although there are some diamonds to be found. I can understand why it's included in this box set but it still seems like an anomaly here as it is a different beast compared to the trilogy.

The cd’s I’ve played all sound great. The studio cd’s were remastered in 2018 but they don’t seem to sound much better than the ones I already had, except perhaps for Flying Teapot. The live cd’s are the ones I’m going to savour the most and I haven’t been disappointed yet. Wonderful. True, some parts of the live recordings were released before (like on 'Live, etc' and 'Premodernist Wireless') but a lot of them are new to me. The live cd’s are not filled up to the brim (some don’t get past 50 minutes of content) but we’re assured that the vaults are emptied now.

The cd’s are housed in 2 foldout holders with a hardback book and a lyrics booklet in a nice medium sized box. I certainly prefer plastic-free packaging but it’s not easy to prise the cd’s from the tight cardboard slits and I fear for scratches and tears at one point or another. The hardback book is full of fine photographs and essays, written partly by the musicians involved (like Mike Howlett and Steve Hillage) and partly by JJG (Jonny Greene?). Not really in-depth but a great kaleidoscope of facts and reminiscences. We’re supposed to prise the booklet apart (by removing staples), resulting in a few smaller booklets titled ‘The blue book’, ‘’The green book’, etcetera. A bit odd. But book and booklet make for extensive fun reading.

Usually with new cd’s I make mp3’s of them to keep a copy in my car. Curiously, my external dvd reader reads 3/4 of each one normally but then the process stalls. Very annoying. Surely not to thwart an effort to copy illegally?

To conclude: perhaps not a perfect release in all aspects but definitely a no-brainer for any serious Gong fan. And remember it’s a limited edition: buy while it’s still within your grasp!

I've already listened to CDs 1-4 (studio, stereo mixes) and I'm very happy with these, especially "Flying Teapot" sounds way better than the infamous Charly vinyl pressing that I have. Now I moved to CD 8 - live from Roanne - and recording, mastering and playing are a treat.
Now, there are several more CDs to hear, plus the quadro mixes DVD, it's going to take some time. If I don't change this review, it means I'm happy, period. :-)

This music is absolutely essential, recommended to literally anyone. Spatious, witty, happy and confusing. Give it a try.

As for this edition, it's faultless. The book gives some good informative reading plus photos.

One might think that "Camembert Electrique" would make more sense than "Shamal" (as for atmosphere, Daevid Allen, contents etc.), but it's strictly a Virgin box, so no.

Very happy indeed, as a Gong fan for decades.

These 70s albums have never sounded better. There are also another 8 discs of live material from the same period. Everything sounds excellent, much better that the recently released BYG set and the live material is very well recorded and an improvement on the various live albums of the period. Would have appreciated Camelbert Electric to have been included as it was a Virgin (Caroline) release although it is well represented in the early live albums.

This is a wonderful box set - beautifully packaged with a magnificent book. And the recordings are just fantastic with many rarities and unheard demos and live versions. If you are a fan of Gong and/or Steve hill age this is an essential purchase and worth every penny - unlike some other box sets due for release later this year!!!

Expensive yet comprehensive. A must for gong lovers. I was slightly disappointed that the cds don't have cases /sleeves for each individual disc, maybe it's to do with cost but the price if this item is already quite excessive, especially when I have a lot of the content already. The purchase was easier through amazon than via the official gong website which was pathetically slow and irritating to the point of me having to cancel the order and reorder through Amazon at a higher price. I would recommend buying this but would imagine most gong fans will already be trying to obtain this collection.
