最初の曲(「Bad Seamstress Blues」)を聴けば、シンデレラがこのアルバムで得意とするポップメタルと、エアロスミスを連想させるブルースっぽい曲をミックスさせながら新しい方向に向かって動き出していることがはっきりわかる。他の同じタイプのグループよりも面白い音作りをしている一方で、その影響は「Fallin' Apart at the Seams」や「Gypsy Road」にはっきり聴き取れる。一緒に歌いだしたくなる「The Last Mile」やヒットシングル「Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)」は間違いなくこのアルバムのハイライトだ。これに加えバラードには、タイトルナンバーや抑え気味な「Coming Home」がある。名アルバムとは言いがたいが、全体としては好感の持てる一枚。

1stの「ナイト・ソングス」は若年層に受けそうなキャッチーが曲が並ぶ、ある意味売れ線狙いのアルバムだったが（しかし『ナイト・ソングス』『ノーバディズ・フール』は大好き !）、本盤「ロング・コールドウインター」は、若い頃からロックを聴き続けていて、ひとひねりもふたひねりもしてないと満足できない私のような少しひねくれた大人のロックファンさえも魅了されるロックアルバムの傑作である。
私は今でもこのディスクを取り出して飽かずに聴いている。特に「ドント・ノウ・ワット・ユー・ゴット」と表題作「ロング・コールド・ウインター」が聴きたいがためである。

「ドント～」の方は、聴く者の心を揺さぶらずにおかないロック・バラードの名曲である。胸迫るトム・キーファーのボーカルも素晴らしいが、ギターのジェフ・ラバーによる間奏のギター・ソロもこれまた素晴らしい！
私はこのギター・ソロが大好きである。
ありきたりの泣きのフレーズにはしたくなかったという意気込みを感じるのは私だけだろうか。ジェフの発想と創意を称賛したい。

「ロング～」におけるトム・キーファーのボーカルは鳥肌もの！喉は大丈夫だろうかと心配してしまうほどのハイトーンで、ブルース特有のタメと間をしっかり効かせて溢れんばかりの情念を迸出させている。いやぁ～、痺れる。このボーカルを聴いて魂を揺さぶられないロックファンはいないはず。

事実、4thアルバム「スティル・クライミング」の頃にトムは喉を痛め、声帯ポリープの除去手術をしているのだが、そのせいなのか、アルバムの曲の一部を普通の声で歌っている。
最近リリースしたソロ・アルバムでは、リスナーのレビューによればハイトーン・ボーカルは聴かれず、普通の声で歌っているとの事だが残念ながら私は未聴である。
絶頂期のハイトーンはもう出せなくなったんだろうと思う。
あのヒステリックなまでのハイトーンのボーカルがあってこそのシンデレラだった。曲の良さもさる事ながら、トムのボーカルに私は魅了された。それが聴けなくなったのはファンとしては寂しい限りだが、しかしトムはその絶頂期にありったけの才能と奇跡とも形容したいようなハイトーン・ボーカルをこのアルバムに刻み、残したのだ。
おそらくは二度と再現できないであろう、私たちロックファンの心をわしづかみにしたあの絶頂期のシンデレラ。
それらの意味で、本盤はロック史における歴史的な意味があり、シンデレラのファンにとってはまさに遺産なのである。
私はスティーブン・タイラー（エアロスミス）が歌う「クレイジー」と、ロバート・プラント（レッド・ツェッペリン）が歌う「アイム・ゴナ・クロール」をロック（あるいはブルース）ボーカルの最高峰と思っているのだが、この「ロング～」もそれに比肩するベスト・ボーカルだと思う。
これら3曲は彼らにしか歌えない、彼らだからこそ歌えた、ある種の奇跡だと思っている。

シンデレラはこのアルバムを以てロック史上に名を残した。

「ロング・コールド・ウインター」はロックファン必聴の傑作である。

たしかにSHM-CDでしたが、マスターが1988年でリマスターされていませんでした。たしか輸入盤にはリマスターされたやつが販売されていると思いますので、そちらの音源使用してほしかったです。アルバム内容は最高です。ブルースかっこいいです。ファーストはヘビメタやってましたが、こちらのセカンドの方が断然よい。20年以上聞き込んだのに飽きません。オススメです♪

名盤！しかし、バンドがロング・コールドだ

シンデレラの価値が微妙なのだ。ジョン・ボン・ジョビに見出されデヴューした彼等だが、ビッグ・セールスを記録した1stアルバムに続く作品として発表したのがこの2edアルバムです。にが味のあるTom Keiferのヴォーカル、AC/DC、デフ・レパードやキックスのような縦ノリのドラム・サウンド。

前作品を踏襲しつつ、新たな境地に足を踏み入れたのがアルバム・タイトル曲をはじめとしたブルースだった。セカンド・シングルトラック3"Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)"始め、HRから逸脱するギリギリの楽曲が目立つ。シングル・ヒットを並べてみると"Gypsy Road""Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)""The Last Mile""Coming Home"。哀愁を帯びたタイトルがズラリ。忘れがちだが、これらが全て(スマッシュ)ヒットし、アメリカでは1stアルバムと同等の売り上げを記録したよ。

今でこそ、彼らの嗜好する音楽がこういう作品と理解できるが、当時、意外に感じたのも事実。1stアルバムのファッションから僅か2年の変化。プロモーション・ビデオで火がついた人気だけに2edアルバムの音楽とふり幅が大き過ぎたのだろう。日本では、圧倒的に1stの人気が勝るだろうね。内容は聞き込めば聞き込む程、このセカンドの方が良いのに。
　
また、追い討ちを掛けるかの如く、バンド名がチャラ過ぎた。'94年の4thアルバム「Still Climbing」以降、(オリジナル・メンバーで)再結成もされず、新作も出ない要因は、それだろう(おっさん、じいさんがシンデレラじゃコミック・バンドだろう)。純粋に音楽だけなら、もっと入り込める気がします。どうしても、昔の衣装とバンド名が邪魔をしてファンだとは言いにくい。約20年の長く冷たい冬が越せないよ。

それまでは、ヴァン・ヘイレンなどのアメリカンロックを聴いていたのだが、ジャケットの美しさについ購入。流れてきたメロディは、今まあで耳にしたこともなかった。しかし、私は心地よさを覚えそれからブルーズを聞くようになった。このアルバムでは①、③、⑥と名曲が収録されておりこの3曲で私の音楽観が変わった。

完成度の高まった、CINDERELLAの2ndです

　ブルース色の強まった2ndです。特に、１，６，７曲目にその傾向が強く表れています。
しかし、２，４，８のような一般受けしそうなポップでキャッチーな曲や、３のような
美しいピアノのイントロが印象的なバラードもあります。
　若い頃はブルースはどうもと思っていましたが、２０年ほど経った今聴いてみると、６の
ようなこってりしたブルースもいいものだと思えるようになりました。そういう意味で、
老若男女問わず楽しめる作品と言えそうです。

ドラムのフレッドがトム曰く、余りに下手くそ過ぎる為、コージーパウエルに叩いて貰ってますが、水を得た魚の如く素ん晴らしいプレイを聞かせてくれます。
コージーパウエル自らも、参加作品の中で好きなアルバムと言っておりました。
コージーパウエルに、負けず劣らず、トムの歌とギターにも大注目ですので、特に若い10代〜20代の方へ、聴いて欲しい1枚です。

As the title of this review says, this is no "Hair Band". If ever a band was unfairly labeled, it was Cinderella. This is band of gifted, talented musicians, led by Tom Keifer, who is one of the most brilliant musicians alive. The album title should be your first clue that this is no ordinary "Hair Band", it paints a picture (Along with the almost majestic, masterfully understated cover) of what's to come. There's a very dark undercurrent to this album that's often missed, and it helps shape the album into the masterpiece it is. (All thier albums had a dark undercurrent, which often went unnoticed, even the debut 'Night Songs' which was thier most "Hair Band"-ish effort.)

It rips out of the gate with 'Bad seamstress blues/Falling apart at the seams', as good an album opener as there ever was, and never lets up. The groove is infectious and it sets the tone perfectly, There's not a bad song to be found, from the Driving rock of 'Gypsy Road',as good a straight up rock song as has even been recorded, to the beautiful elegance of 'Coming Home' to the outstanding closer 'Take me Back', a song not about relationships, but about wanting to go back to the innocence of youth. While Keifer's voice does take some getting used to, it always seems to fit, and his guitar playing is underappreciated. Jeff LaBar is a great compliment to Keifer's guitar work, Eric Brittingham is one of the most underrated bassists alive, and Drummer Fred Coury is rock solid. The chemistry between the 4 is obvious and it's that aspect that sets them apart (Strangely, for the second straight album Coury doesn't actually play on the recording. The late, great Cozy Powell did the studio drumming on LCW. RIP Cozy.)

Cinderella was, and still is, as I saw them live on July 5th 2010 and they were the best live band I've ever seen, a straight up blues influenced ROCK band, and this is a ROCK album with great songs, great musicianship, and, contrary to what this band's perception was, no cheese. And it's as good a rock album as has ever been recorded. This is thier best album, followed by the seldom heard 'Still Climbing', then the incredibly underappreciated 'Heartbreak Station', and 'Night Songs', but all all 5 star efforts. So if you're foolish enough to only have one album by this incredible band this is the one to get. It still sounds relevant even 22 years later, and it remains one of those rare albums that amazes you during every listen. This is a cliche, but this is a desert Island albun for me, that's how great it is, So please don't let the label scare you off, this is a great, great band of talented musicians with brilliant songs. I can't recommend 'Long Cold Winter' highly enough, and after you hear it, you won't be able to either.

Cinderella were just one of those bands that encaptured and enraptured the hard rock/glam metal scene of the late 80s. Their 1986 debut, 'Night Songs', was received well and went platinum. This 1988 album did, too. And for good reason.
Put short, it's a great hard rock record with big hair, bad attitude, and a bit of blues thrown in. Some people discount Cinderella as really a glam band at all. They looked it, but their sound was somewhere between Bon Jovi and the Georgia Satellites. Either way, 'Long Cold Winter' is packed full of stompers, rockers and headbangers, as well as some beautiful ballads.
'Bad Seamstress Blues / Fallin' Apart At the Seams' is the perfect opener. It rocks and pumps, building from a southern-style lap steel opening. Followed by the *flawless* anthem, 'Gypsy Road' and the band's signature ballad, 'Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone), you have the recipe for a sonically-supreme piece. These three tracks are worth the price alone. But 'The Last Mile' is another really good track, as is 'If You Don't Like It' and 'Coming Home'. The rest of the album is perhaps filler, but still more than worth a listen, especially the title track which is a nigh-on-six minute bluesy experience.
Tom Keifer's vocals shine high and bright with a distinctive rasp - still far from the screech of musicians like Axl, though. It's distinctive in its own right, and owes the entire album a feeling of nonchalance about the world that's infectious.
The record is also packaged very nicely, in a nice little slip cover - and boasting a lyric sheet with picture of the band on the other side. Overall, I really recommend Long Cold Winter if you like all things rock, glam and hair. Also... if you're just cool

As good as the debut but slightly different in tone and with a notable sheen on the production, Long Cold Winter was the closest Cinderella has got to a 'classic' or world domination. At the time the Motley Crues and Poisons of the world were doing rather well and there was no reason whatsoever why Cinderella could not enjoy the same spoils of the glam/stadium rock dalliance of the mid eighties. They did have the tunes and the ridiculously effeminate look but somehow they didn't seem to capture the majority vote. However there are a few die-hard nostalgia-hunters like myself that will always remember and looking back on(and revisiting) Cinderella has been a pleasure.

Their second effort was steering more towards the serious, blues-orientated rock n roll than their debut. It was evident on Night Songs but Long Cold Winter has a thread of the blues throughout. The opening track begins with a blues jam, redolent of the genre with slide guitar screeching and splashing the riff until the distortion kicks in. It's a heavy rocker in the vein of AC/DC, but sleazy like the Dogs D'Amour. 'Gypsy Road' is a single template. It's agreat, catchy 3 minute mini-classic. 'Don't KNow What You Got...' is a classic but it isn't the best song. The catchy chorus will always make it memorable but it errs on the wrong side of maudlin for my taste. 'The Last Mile' is another catchy rocker, as is 'Second Wind'. Nothing overly exciting about them both, but nothing bad either.

The title track is an adequate ballad and is notable for it's stripped down structure, taking the band miles away from glam rock and into proper hard rock and blues territory. The rest are all very good, 'Take Me Back' being the pick.

If you like a bit of Motley Crue, Poison, Wasp, or even Bon Jovi and AC/DC you may find something to enjoy. Sadly they lasted for another 2 albums further but their best lies in the first 2 releases. As of early 2012 (at time of writing) they are touring together as a band but whether any new music will occur is dubious. But in today's climate of 'any-genre-goes' and the zeitgeist of bands reforming, a la Black Sabbath, now has never been a better time in which to grab the opportunity...
