It's no exaggeration to say this might be the most intense and groundbreaking 45-minute performance in the history of rock. Jimi Hendrix's debut American set at 1967's Monterey Pop Festival is generally considered one of the most radical and legendary live shows ever, so this re-mastered version of the rather short, ten-song gig is long overdue. Released in conjunction with the similarly titled DVD (which presents the audio in stunning 5.1 surround), the music has never sounded better. Virtually unknown to American audiences at the time, even though he was already an established entity in the UK, Hendrix and his two-piece Experience explode on stage, ripping through blues classics "Rock Me Baby" and Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor," interpreting and electrifying Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," debuting songs from his yet-to-be-released first album and closing with the now historic sacrificing/burning of his guitar during an unhinged version of "Wild Thing" that even its writer Chip Taylor would never have imagined. Hendrix uses feedback and distortion to enhance the songs in whisper-to-scream intensity, blazing territory that had not been previously explored with as much soul-frazzled power. This may not have been the band's finest hour, but it is surely its most significant. Fortunately, tape decks and cameras were running to record the event for posterity, ensuring that rock guitar had entered a new era and there was no turning back. --Hal Horowitz

かと思えば『Like A Rolling Stone』、『The Wind Cries Mary』での繊細なトーンの美しさにも驚かされます。50年前の機材を熟知し、制御していたのがジミ・ヘンドリックスという男なのです。『Killing Floor』から『Hey Joe』までの前半戦のナンバーは全てこの日がベストテイクだと思います。特に後に『Lover Man』へと変化する『Rock Me Baby』は絶品です。

What can be said about the legend that is Jimi Hendrix and the band. This is one of the few live releases that I did not have, and boy I am glad that I have it now. I am not sure if it is the complete set as the CD comes in at around 43 minutes. That is by no means a criticism only an observation. They are all playing out of their skins. I will never cease to have shivers down my back whenever I here Jimi and the band. As for the sound quality, it is excellent.
This has to be one of Hendrix best "live " shows,A fresh sound this album has too.Its 1967, Jimmy Hendrix is on top of his game,I was spoiled for music growing up as a teenager around this time,But Jimmy changed it all for me,yet I always come back to this concert and album with a fond memory, his rendition of Bob Dylans "like a rolling stone"is something else,Bob was a big influence on Jimmy whom he watched play years before.Theres a good variety on offer on this album too, considering theres only 9 songs on it,running time 43mins aprox,..covers like "killing floor" and "rock me baby" are done Jimmys way."hey joe" one of the better "live" versions, then you got that mixed in with "can you see me".."foxy Lady"."purple haze"..the wind cries mary" and that old "Reg Presley" classic "wild thing.well packaged from amazon, and a quick service ,at a good price, you cant go wrong with this album in your collection.jimmy,Mitch and noel may be gone..but the music lives on..and a good live recording it is.

Really, really rough stuff, in a really, really good way. The sixties rock concert absolutely caught, Hendrix sounds as though he might be in an "altered consciousness" (REALLY?), his banter is brilliant and the drama is incredible. So is this record. Play loud, I'd say. I'm so glad this got put out on CD, the Hendrix catalogue is such a mess. What a powerful band!
Somewhat disappointed. Did not fof me match up to the glowing revues. Jimi sounds somewhat nervous. Plays adequately but the recording is far from studio quality.
