軽快なテンポで読みやすい一冊でしたが、前半に登場する日本人商人の言動に驚きでした。著者のような時代の最先端を行く女性でもこのような偏見があったとは・・・。Sex and the Cityは日本でもかなり話題になっていたのに、リサーチしてくれなかったんでしょうか。。。

女の武器は「若さ」じゃない！

ビクトリー（デザイナー）、ウェンディ（映画配給会社役員）、ニコ（有名雑誌編集長）は、天が二物も三物も与えたような女性たち。４０を超えても、なお、美しく勢力的な彼女たちには、一昔前の女性が描いた「幸せ」とは無縁です。むしろ、男の人をリードする勢い。そんな彼女たちが持つ悩みは、やはり、昔とはちょっと違います。会社存続の危機、不満を抱える年下専業主夫との不仲、若い男性との浮気...。「リップスティック・ジャングル」は、NYを舞台に活躍する３人のキャリアウーマンの日常を描いた物語です。

登場人物全員が、どこにでもいるような人たちではないので、ビクトリーが自分の若かりし頃を回想している場面以外は、ありえる話なのかそうでないのか、今ひとつよく分からないのが現状です。だから、なおのこと、細かいことを気にしないで、大活躍する女性たちの武勇伝が、お洒落でかっこよく見えるのです。社会的地位を持つ４０代の女性。そんな彼女たちのことを、男性が、まだまだ「セクシー」だと感じる世の中。プロットとしての掴みは抜群だと思います。

ただ、この手のアップテンポの大衆文学は、作者も読者も主要登場人物の味方なので、人の持つ「卑しさ」「弱さ」を掘り下げるようなことがなく、あっけらかんと話が進み、終わってしまいます。一皮むけた文学作品を期待している方にはお勧めできませんが、これは、これで、とても楽しい作品です。「男に幸せにしてもらおうなんて考えてもいないわ！自分の力で十分に幸せになれるの！」そんな、既存の「女性という枠組み」から飛び出した女性たちの声が聞こえてきそうな気がして、気持ちよく読めました。

Trading Up 同様、テンポも良く

NYのゴージャスなビジネスと社交の場が舞台。

30代の女性がぶつかる壁。

恋、仕事、家庭…ドラマチックな展開で面白かった。

Trading Up にも出てた、登場人物もいるので

Trading Up を読んでる方が、その人達が何を象徴してるか

わかるから面白いと思いますよ。

※別に読んでなくても、話しは通じます。

一つ言うなら、終わりがちょっと物足りなかった気がします。

でも、中身は十分濃い内容で読み応えありです。

With a 21st century edit this book would be really great. I loved the story, the reality of life, the rawness and how friendships come before anything, but it is rather dated in some ways. To read that, to be a successful woman is, to be like a man. As if success was defined by gender.

I found this book ok nothing really wrong with it but no twists or turns that get you hooked.
I engaged with all three of the characters but found the ending very rushed I had to go back to check I hadn't missed anything as it seemed to hop from one time period to six months later without any reason as from what I was reading nothing really significant happened to warrant a big jump in time.
I wouldn't personally recommend it was just a bit of a dull read which never really went anywhere

I really enojyed this novel by Candace Bushnell. It gave the reader a glimpse of the world of New Yorks most powerful women - the tactics, the bitchiness and their lovelives. Enjoyable and entertaining.
