This album lived up to its title as every song on this album either addressed life, love, or pain. I'm glad that I was able to listen to this entire album as many times as I have this year as to truly understand Club Nouveau's sound and what they were trying to accomplish with this album.
One of the elements of this album that I appreciated was that every member of Club Nouveau got a chance to show off their singing voices, either as backing or lead vocalists. Yes, Samuelle Prater, Valerie Watson-English, and Jay King were the lead singers of the group, but there were instances on the album where Denzil Foster and even Michael Marshall (of the Rumors song fame) from Timex Social Club could be heard singing as backing vocalists on the album.
Then there was the beat production, where Jay King, Thomas McElroy, and Foster spearheaded that area. Seven out of the eight songs on this album made you want to either get up and dance, tap your feet, or move some rhythmic part of your body. King did a good job updating for the late 1980s that is, the beat production on track 3 (Lean on Me) which was the albums' biggest hit single.
Life, Love & Pain had a message within every song, even the instrumental track Promises, Promises. To some, even back in the album's original run, Life, Love & Pain seemed like a R&B pop album with some good beats and singing. But the album was and is more than that. It's an album with lyrical depth, good beats, and a sound that was good enough to make it one of the biggest hit albums of 1986.
If there was a gripe to be had with this album and it's a small gripe, but I think Watson English was the strongest singer in the group, but she only had one solo track (track 7, Let Me Go) to sing on the album. Her voice was heard during much of the album, but she should have been given more than one solo track. Then again, the album was only eight tracks, with one of them being a reprise of another song on the album.
In conclusion, Club Nouveau busted loose and hit the music business hard in 1986 with their debut album under another group name (they used to be called Timex Social Club, but that's a topic for another site). This album should be in the collection of anyone who misses 1980s R&B or who just simply loves quality music from that decade.
