The Shawshank Redemption meets No Country for Old Men in the breathtaking new novel from international bestseller Michael Robotham -- already receiving rave reviews, this is the most original, compelling thriller you'll read all year and winner of the CWA Gold Dagger Award 2015.Why would a man escape from prison the day before he's due to be released?Audie Palmer has spent a decade in prison for an armed robbery in which four people died, including two of the gang. Seven million dollars has never been recovered and everybody believes that Audie knows where the money is.For ten years he has been beaten, stabbed, throttled and threatened almost daily by prison guards, inmates and criminal gangs, who all want to answer this same question, but suddenly Audie vanishes, the day before he's due to be released.Everybody wants to find Audie, but he's not running. Instead he's trying to save a life . . . and not just his own.
Damn near perfect * Weekend Sport * Start reading Life or Death and you'll want to stay curled up in an armchair with one of the best thrillers you'll read this year * Good Book Guide * [A] superbly exciting thriller... Beautifully written and full of poignancy * Sunday Mirror * Life or Death is a nerve-shredding thriller with the heart and soul so often missing from lesser crime and suspense novels. I couldn't stop reading, yet I didn't want Audie's story to end. Robotham is an absolute master. * Stephen King * One of the best thrillers you will read this year * Financial Times * I love this guy's books. Try this one and you'll see why * Lee Child *商品の説明をすべて表示する
As the story progressed further, the twist in the story just kept me turning the pages to the very end, in which I found myself totally breathless and amazed that the story was not what I expected in the first place. Audie Palmer was indeed someone who is so, so unlucky ( I mean massive unlucky) and yet so lucky at the same time.... At times , whilst reading the book, I could not help wondering if this is somehow based on a true incident? Perhaps some elements of it could be... I suppose only the author can tell us......
The warden asks Moss, the inmate whose cell is next to Audie’s, but he doesn’t know. Moss is released on “his own recognizance” to track down Audie and let some shady characters know where he is so Audie (and Moss) can be silenced.
Enter Desiree Furness, a vertically-challenged FBI special agent, also on Audie’s trail mainly because of a missing $7 million dollars from an armored car heist gone terribly wrong. Something is just not tracking for Desiree. She has a number of the pieces of the puzzle, but they will not fit together.
Add to the mix Sheriff Ryan Valdez who will stop at nothing to find Audie. All of these characters converge, but not in the way one would expect. Characters are fully developed and there are twists ‘aplenty in Robotham’s freight-train of a novel. As far as I can tell, this is a stand-alone novel so everyone can enjoy it. I do hope that Desiree is featured in another Robotham novel real soon. Well done, Mr. Robotham!
The book starts off at a steady pace, but so interesting that you want to read more. Gradually the pace quickens so that by the time you reach the end of the book, you are panting :)
It was a great read, and really worth it. And I really enjoyed a break from Joe O'Loughlin, I hope that there are more stand-alones to come!
