The heroine lusts after every man she sees and uses crude language excessively. She is not likeable so one doesn't really care what happens to her. The book is filled with role playing vampires and homosexuals. The love interest has no personality other than his looks. In fact all the characters have no personality except their physical descriptions. The murder is icky and the reason for its commission is unbelievable. The solution is typical and the grammar needs work. Yet it moves at a steady pace and if you don't mind these flaws, I guess it's okay.

I am reluctant to be too critical given that the book cost me nothing. But I was so dissatisfied that I won't look for another in the series, and I'll be wary before buying anything else from this author.

There were some rave reviews and the blurb suggested a good, tight mystery. In fact the mystery part of it was potentially good; and had the main characters been likable it would have been a great yarn. Although the ending was disappointing and seemed somehow contrived.

Mimi is an ex-Secret-Service agent who's been around. Yet, as one other reviewer said "she barfs at a dead body" - get real! But the worst part is that there are at least two Adonis-type males (one an ex-lover and a cop, the other a possible perp) and every time she meets them she becomes an idiot 13-year-old girl who loses her brain and becomes incoherent and imagines them naked and holding her in their strong, brawny arms. I have read enough of that in M&B but I don't appreciate a heroine who is that incompetent. No real woman I have ever met could be so ridiculous and stupid. Furthermore, the cop is an overbearing bully who demeans and belittles everyone he meets, especially women, and Mimi more than anyone; and Mimi laps it up! She is constantly fantasizing about sex with him; why?

Then, as the suspense builds and the murderer is stalking her, she hides under the bed-covers, without her gun, which is on the bedside table. Oh, come on! How can you like or respect such a person? So, Jamie Lee, you need to watch the spelling, tighten up the editing, and give us heroes/heroines who are more real. Mimi is more suited to a fairy-tale about Beauty and the Beast - and Nick is well suited to the role of Beast.

5つ星のうち 5.0 Blood etc. 2015/11/5

Women private investigators are bound to have problems, even if they aren’t especially young and only mildly attractive. But, the PI in this tale specializes in being a decoy setting the stage for trapping errant husbands. In this instance, however, her major task consists of running down the source of threatening letters addressed to a woman who writes vampire novels. Almost immediately the quest shifts, our protagonist finds herself instead employed to run down the perpetrator of a particularly gruesome murder—a beheading.

As might be expected in a novel about a vampire story writer and with an early on death by decapitation, there’s bound to be a certain amount of blood scattered around, but there seems to be a far greater abundance of other bodily fluids; including saliva, drooling, barfing, spitting up food and lots of references to pee. There’s even the mention of other bodily detritus such as mutual skin peeling following a bad sunburn. Sex plays a minor role, since more time is spent in the bathroom than in the bedroom.

Unless the reader is turned off by this rather peculiar emphasis, the book stands up very well. The pace is fast, the characters are fascinating, the perpetrator surprising and the romantic element is certainly not a cloying one. First rate entertainment.

5つ星のうち 4.0 3.5 stars: an entertaining mystery 2016/11/21

I love the Gotcha Detective Agency, and the people who work for it! They are all individuals, and vividly drawn. In an ongoing series, the supporting characters are vital, and these are great.

Mimi- our first-person protagonist- is interesting, too. She has an eye for a fine figure of a lad- but that's well i the tradition of male PIs distracted by "dames", so I enjoyed it.

The plot is something of a shout-out to Hamilton's vampire novels, and also vamp role-playing games. I'm not completely sure the overall solution made sense- the sword was not accounted for, for instance- but the overall read was fun.

5つ星のうち 3.0 Not Quite Cozy But Decent Mystery 2015/4/23

For the most part, I enjoyed this story. It wasn't exactly a "cozy" mystery with its very graphic and horrific murder and some rather crude language in places, but it was decent.

Sometimes I liked the main character Mimi and sometimes I did not. She seemed like a fairly intelligent, feisty and strong woman with a great sense of humour, and then she would do or think something immature and dumb that would change my opinion of her--this was especially true of her constant mental undressing of nearly every man in her vicinity and her desire to jump into bed with them. It hadn't been that long since her husband's untimely disappearance. Was she really that sex-starved? And, I totally disliked how she mooned over Nick, who struck me as a very obnoxious, rude, disrespectful, condescending lout, never mind that he was supposed to be hot and sexy. I couldn't see it myself and I never warmed up to him at all in the book. Charles was a better character by far with his bantering and calm demeanour in tense situations.

The idea of the vampire role-playing game was quite intriguing and added a bit of paranormal flavour to the plot, even though the vampires weren't real.

As for the mystery itself, there was a good abundance of suspects with motive and opportunity, and it wasn't easy to guess the identity of the culprit. However, when the murderer was finally caught, I found the motive to be somewhat weak and questionable given the brutality of the killing.

All in all, this was not a bad read, and I will probably read the next book in the series sometime in the near future.
