Having bought a Yahama DD65 electric drumkit, I decided to take the opportunity to learn to play timbales as well as traditional drums. Although I am a Rock music lover I have always loved the sound of timbales.
Most of the exercises use cowbell, large timbal, and bass drum. The notation clearly states whether the student is to play the mouth of the cowbell or the centre. Similarly, the student is sometimes expected to hit the centre of the drum and sometimes to play a rim shot. Occasionally, there is an instruction to strike the outside of the timbal. These effects don't really work on an electric drumkit. This didn't bother me - I was happy to improvise and don't expect to be playing timbales in public any time soon! I bring this to your attention just in case you're using an electric drumkit and feel that your enjoyment of learning timbales would be affected by it. Rest assured, it has not affected the number of stars I've awarded.
I have only one criticism of this book: some of the exercises show flams and drags, and others refer to a press roll and a stick shot. No explanation is provided as to how to play any of these, which leads me to believe that the book is not aimed at students who are beginners to percussion. As I am already familiar with all these things, this did not affect my enjoyment of the book, but I feel it merits the deduction of a star. There is a little inconsistency as to whether the singular is timbal or timbale, but this is trivial and doesn't merit the removal of a star.
In addition to rhythms for different styles of music, there is a section of short fill-ins.
In conclusion, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning timbales from this book and would have no hesitation in recommending it. I hope to buy more books by Ted Reed in the future.
