This author and series are new to me. Even though this is my first book, I know it won't be my last. Everything about this book is fun. Cindy Eller is a baker extraordinaire. She's also a witch who doesn't have complete control over her magic. In Cindy's world every man is a toad...literally. One kiss is all it takes. So many men, so many toads. And if she doesn't get that little problem under control, the Council is going to take away her magic.

Cindy's roommates are Ordinaries (non magical). They work with Cindy and even reluctantly babysit her dates once they become toads. Her mother is a powerful Earth Witch who has been married twelve times and cannot seem to stop criticizing Cindy. It's no wonder that Cindy's life is complicated and entertaining.

If you want a book that will keep you engaged and entertained, I hope that you'll read How (Not) to Kiss a Toad. Enjoy!

Cindy Eller is a magical being (her mom despises being called a witch) with an affinity to bake delectable, decadent treats with unusual ingredients. She has her dream job at a local bakery and rooms with 2 of her friends who know she's magical. Shortly after the story begins, however, she discovers that a new local ice cream maker (who makes excellent ice cream) seems to have all of the flavors of ice cream to match her tasted baked confections. She begins to fear that she's copying their recipes, which isn't a good idea.

The worst thing, however, is the fact that she's unable to prevent herself from turning each and every guy she kisses into toads. When she meets Timothy, a gorgeous new customer in the bakery, Cindy is hoping that she's finally met the one that will change her streak of bad toads....err, men.

What ensues is nothing short of chaos. Loss of employment for starters, then her ability to continue to do magic is threatened when it's found out that she's turning men into toads. In order to keep her magic from being stripped away, she must work with her newest step-dad in changing back the toads to their human self, and learn how to control magic.

Cindy is a pretty likable main character. She's as down to earth as a magic wielder can be and really wants to make it in the world of baking, even though her mother (who is also a fairy godmother) isn't at all impressed. She feels that Cindy can do much better than work in a bakery. Oh, and Cindy's two roommates are a riot. They are both there for Cindy (they are all there for one another) throughout everything that happens.

Timothy is a character I'm on the fence about. He may be good looking and charming but he lost a lot of brownie points with me during a turn in the novel where Cindy's world was falling apart. I'll stop there so as not to ruin anything. Just note that I think that Cindy can do better; either that or the author really needs to improve his character in the next book - which I can't wait to read regardless of how Timothy is written.

So much happens in this novel that you find yourself glued to the pages. I read this entire novel in one night after work....it helped that the hubby was off playing golf :) The writing style is fluid and the author does a great job keeping each thread straight but intertwined throughout the novel as necessary. There are typical misunderstandings, sweet romantic moments, and bitter realizations but no sex or over-the-top swearing or inappropriate passages.

Cute and fun - What's not to love?!

HOW (NOT) TO KISS A TOAD is the first full-length storyline in Elizabeth A. Reeves new paranormal contemporary series Cindy Eller. There is a short prequel novella (How Not To Play With Magic) that introduces the series protagonist and her sisters, but it is not necessary to the plot.

Cindy Eller is a witch (or so she believes) but there is a problem-her mother refuses to talk about her father and therefore she is unable to determine who or what she is. Whenever she kisses a man, he turns into a toad. And to make matters worse, her most recent trip into Toadville has remained in his amphibious state. As Cindy struggles to make right the wrong, she will encounter more problems when the Council of Magic believes she is wielding her power for no good.

Enter Mr. Right –toad number two- and Cindy knows she has been cursed. When Mr. Right makes all the right moves and says all the right things, she believes she has found ‘the one’. But Mr. Right has a secret or two himself. Cindy’s kiss will once again curse the new man in her life and now she must face the Council of Magic to determine if she will be stripped of her powers forever.

HOW (NOT) TO KISS A TOAD is a humorous take on a fairytale premise. Written in the chic-lit genre, there are moments of fun and entertainment meshed into a storyline about three friends working in a bake shop who one day hope to make it on their own. With an extended family of half-sisters and more, you know there will be several more storylines in the Cindy Eller series.

Elizabeth Reeves takes the reader on a ride through cupcake heaven and lands them squarely into the icy realm of gourmet ice-cream hell. The relationship with Mr. Right took an abrupt turn to nowhere, and in the end, their reconciliation was rather quick –as though the author was racing to the finish. There is always something missing when an author reconciles with the characters too quickly.

There are a few issues of grammar and spelling that any good proof-reader or editor should have caught, but overall the story is a quick read that should bring about a smile or two.

It could have been really good but then the author turned the main character into some spineless, woe is me, needy female who is so desperate for a man that no matter how bad she's treated by "the one" she forgives him even after he steals from her, lies to her, etc. book was actually pathetic.

5つ星のうち 2.0 Talented & Funny Author - Unlikable & Untrustworthy Male Lead :( 2013/11/19

** SPOILER ALERT **
Let me start by saying, this author clearly has some writing talent and I would give her one more try. I really wanted to like this novel. Parts of it, I truly enjoyed. Other parts left me frustrated. Specifically, I enjoyed the female protagonist, her roommates, her family, and the magical elements that made this book unique. The author does have a fun sense of humor that had me laughing out loud more than a couple times. On the flip-side, the descriptions of the foods were very heavy handed and got old pretty quickly for me. I found myself skimming them often. This was worth it, however, because the rest was so interesting. What I couldn't get past was the primary male character. I can't seem to call him the male "protagonist" because I just don't see him as a "good guy" and that right there is the problem.

Even before we found out his awful deed (which I saw coming from almost the beginning), I just didn't buy the chemistry. I kept waiting for the "real" romantic interest to show up. When it became obvious he was it, I tried to buy into the relationship and held out hope there was a real explanation for the twist I knew was coming. There wasn't. (SPOILER ALERT!!) Here is how it went:

“I meant to tell you who I was,” he said slowly. “And I didn’t mean to steal your flavors…”
“How can you steal something accidentally?” I knew my voice was snarky, but I was too upset to care.
“You’re right,” he said again. “How can I make this better?” I shook my head. “I’m not sure that you can.”
“Please, let me try.”

And then he hands her an envelope full of cash and offers her a job which entails giving him her creative property in an ethical way. That's as good as it got. No reason. No explanation. Nothing. And (SPOILER ALERT) she took him back! I just couldn't figure out why. The guy STOLE her creative property and she just rolled over! I mean, he didn't even TRY to explain his reasoning. And she did not ask! How can she not ask WHY? Sorry. I just don't get it. I wound up feeling like he was unethical and untrustworthy at best and I half suspected him of being a two-faced user at worst. To the author's credit, she did show the female protagonist struggling to to trust the male lead after this, but it just wasn't enough for me. Without any understanding of WHY he had committed such an egregious betrayal, I had no reason to believe this wasn't his usual M.O. I had no justification for expecting that he wouldn't do such a thing again if the opportunity arose. For me, if the male lead in a romance novel isn't likable, it's just not a satisfying book.
