Just saw play in Columbus Ohio and loved the music. Original cast is superb.
One of the best musicals ever made!

The cast, the score, the book, everything about this show is just sublime. However, I also recommend getting the broadway cast recording with Vanessa Williams which includes most of the dialogue bits that helps you get more into the story, and most of the orchestration arrangements are enhanced and sound even better.

I saw it on stage in the 80s. This soundtrack reminds me of how powerful the work is.

Like pretty much every Kander and Ebb score

I saw this on Broadway, and I had a few major reservations about it. Like pretty much every Kander and Ebb score, it has a number of really good numbers - The Day After That, and Dear One are two standouts, but it also has some turkeys. The Morphine Tango and Gimme Love are terrible songs, and tacky moments in the show. The lighting was striking, Brent Carver was absolutely brilliant, and Chita Rivera had enormous presence, and could still sing - all positives. But she couldn't dance any longer, and you could see the struggle. So the dance numbers which should have been wonderful weren't. The show didn't quite work, and the music, separated from the dynamic energy of the live performance, is mediocre. In the film, the sequences where the Spider Woman appears had a genuine feel of B grade movie exotica, and a tongue in cheek tropical heat about them. Those numbers in the show were more like rejects from a Las Vegas review and Chita Rivera was hampered by some truely awful costumes. Everyone wondered at the time how they could possibly turn this story into a musical. The effort was a bold one, and it had its moments, but I thought it was disappointing, and the music is too.
