Michael J. Sandel is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1980. He has taught his undergraduate course Justice to more than 15,000 Harvard students over the years, and video footage of the course was adapted into a PBS television series. Sandel graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University and received his doctorate from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He served on the George W. Bush administration's President's Council on Bioethics. He lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.

マイケルサンデル教授はハーバード大学で政治哲学の講義を三十年もの間おこなっている政治哲学者です。我が国でもNHK教育テレビにてサンデル教授のその「ハーバード白熱教室」が話題になりました。その講義を元に一般書として書き下ろされたのが本書「Justice」です。

具体的な実例やエピソード、逸話などから、政治哲学史上のアリストテレスやカント、ベンサム、ロックなどの哲学的概念に論述が展開します。読者は普段の生活上の何気ない出来事に政治哲学がいかに関わっているのか驚くでしょう。決してサンデル教授のイデオロギーで問題が解釈され解決策が論じられているのではありません。本書からもサンデル教授の講義の緊張感が伝わってくるようです。読者がみずから考える態度が養われるでしょう。

英語の水準は英検準1級以上。

とても読みやすいです。論旨が明確で、語彙や表現もシンプルで、これまでフランス現代思想を中心に読んできた自分にはちょっと驚きでした。英語としても簡単とは言いませんが、それほど難しくはないと思います。実際にあった具体的な問題を、功利主義・リバタリアニズム・カント・アリストテレス・コミュニタリアニズム、それぞれの観点から考えていきます。「これが正しい考え方なんだ」という上から目線の書き方ではなく、彼らならこのように考えて、このような答えを導きだすだろうが、そうするとこのような問題が生じる…というような一緒に考えようという書き方です。もちろん、完全に中立な考えというのはあり得ないので、最後の最後には自分の立場の結論にもっていくことになるのですが、サンデルに賛同するにせよ、そうでないにせよ、政治哲学を志す方には避けて通れない本だと思います。
問題処理の手際は見事なのですが、問題提示が具体的かつ明快すぎて物足りないとも言えるのかもしれません。アポリアには決して踏み込まない。それがこの本の明快さのカギであり、教育目的では非常に模範的なのですが、思考のスリルを味わうという要素は全くないです。（その点では彼の想定する論敵の方が面白い）

正義についてのもっとも初歩的なところを丁寧にわかりやすく説明したもので、内容自体は倫理学や社会哲学の現代的な入門書に載っていることとほとんど変わりません。特に日本で今この本が売れる内生的な理由があったとは思えませんが(十数年前の自己決定権ブームでも、これほど目立った本はありませんでした)、平明な英語は出色だと思います。

自分で考えるための材料が一般的な入門書より少なめなので、副読本なり他の現代倫理学の本で補強しながら、自分で考えることができるようにしましょう。講義はとっかかりを説明するもので、後は自分で学ぶのが国際的なスタイルですから。特に、キリスト教的な価値観にも、功利主義やリバタリアニズムへの馴染みも薄い日本人にはなおのこと。

講義のオルタナティブのような感じなので、音声あるいは映像を繰り返し視聴できる環境があれば、内容的にはどちらか好きな方だけを使えばいいでしょう。両方やれば英語のいい勉強になります。

あまりにも有名な本だと思いますが、遅ればせながら、読んでみました。

Aristotle、Bentham、Mill、Kantといった名前ぐらいしか覚えていない人物（哲学者）の考えに触れることが出来て、とても興味深かったです。また、何が正しいのか（正義なのか）を考える際の題材（具体的事例）が豊富で、テーマが難しいにも拘らず、比較的スムーズに最後まで読み終えることができました。あれやこれや考えることができて、なかなか楽しかった（？）です。

どちらかと言うと、若い時に読んでおきたかった一冊ですね。ちなみに英語のレベルは、私にとってはちょっと難しかったです…

ネットで公開されているサンデル教授の講義を観て「面白い」と思った方には、是非本書にも目を通してみることをお勧めします。
講義に基づいて書き起こした書物なので、映像で観たものの追体験をしている感覚で読めます。
一方、映像を見るのと違って自分のペースで読み進めていけるので、要所要所で立ち止まり「自分はどう考えるか」とじっくり自問できます。
これがまた楽しかったりします。

Kindle版を購入したのですが、これなら知らない単語が出てきても長押しで即座に辞書引きできます。
思考の流れが中断されずに読み進められるので、本当に快適でした。

Mr. Sandel says Mr. Rawls points out the inequity between people and says Mr. Rawls insists we make up for it somehow. But what if we think the inequity itself is a rule the Almighty made? If so, we've only to follow the rule without being annoyed at all.
As to Mr. Sandel’s own stance, he makes light of utilitarianism, and I totally agree with him, though I didn’t, now that I’m influenced with a Japanese sociologist Mr. Miyadai, who has his own very interesting stance on political philosophy. In his dialogue with another Japanese sociologist Mr. Osawa in the book written in Japanese titled “Thinking O Vol.8” (2010/11/10 out) are several kinds of justice Mr. Sandel doesn’t deal with in this book. If you’ve been interested in this book, I recommend you read a copy of “Thinking O Vol.8”.

There is plenty i liked about this book. Daniel systematically outlined various aspects of political philosophy and uses easy-to-follow examples relevant to everyday life to illustrate his points. I have come away with a much deeper understanding of contemporary political discourse, and some hope that there may be a better way for public debate to go forward.

The problem is that on the page it can be really quite dry. There were some sections where my attention started to wander, and it took a quick re-read to make sure I'd actually taken it in. I believe you can still find Sandel's lecture course on justice (on which this book is largely based) on YouTube. There his easy charm and the presence of an engaged and questioning audience of bright young minds really bring this stuff to life. I'd recommend giving that a watch as a companion to this book.

This is an excellent book on the always tricky subject of "what's the right thing to do", or simply "what's right or wrong". The author is an eminent scholar and the range of his knowledge is remarkable. However, he manages to turn a complex matter into a very clear book, helped by very clear and useful examples.
Some authors appear constantly, yet they've never been so clear, such as Kant or Mill's utilitarism.
Equally, some notions, such as justice, fairness, liberty and other similar ones, are explained beautifully and, importantly, in their different meanings throughout history.
A very good book who repays repeated readings.

I cannot recommend 'Justice' highly enough. A Harvard professor, so presumably more at home in the rarefied world of academia, Michael Sandel has nevertheless the rare talent of turning lofty ideas into accessible and engaging discussions. Furthermore, while reading his book we can't help but start wondering about other concepts too, such as ethics, freedom, the distribution of wealth, or the role played by both personal responsibility and culture/society in our individual lives (which is the dominant one?) All in all, I'd say this is one of the best and most useful texts I've ever read.

As another reviewer said, 'Justice' makes us think, and there is no higher praise for any book, of any genre. It is true that its most examples and debates are USA-centred and highly specific to the Americans, but don't let that put you off, the questions this exceptional book poses are universal and so, to the intelligent reader, pretty much everything in here will be highly relevant no matter where we live. And if you're looking to form a well-rounded, informed view of the world we live in, you could do worse than reading also Sandel's What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets and the not at all insignificant Globalization: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) by Steger.

This was a really good book. It certainly made me think and if i am honest, I didn't understand all of it. But i liked the fact it asks some good moral questions which makes the reader have to think. It does read in parts like an academic book, but it's also has good chapters and headings which helped me. I would recommend, a good book !

Michael Sandel caught my attention with the BBC series on justice. Then I discovered the 12 Havard lectures on iTunesU / youtube and the book and so bought the book; it has has changed how I view moral delimmas. The first chapter discusses a dilemma involving the needs of many vs. the needs of one, and by re-casting the problem in different ways most of us change our minds on what is right. As the author intended, the book shows us how to "morally reflect" different views from different schools of thought, and how to seek the principal that we apply in making judgements (you can read this part in the free download of the the Kindle edition). Thereafter Michael descends deeper into the differing schools - utilitarianism, liberalism, Kant, Rawls, and Aristotle. The book closely mirrors the video lectures with little deviation so by coupling both the material sinks in. I myself am not a philosopher; but after reading this I feel a much keener interest in philosophy, particularly moral philosophy that has surprised me. Throughout the book the author remains neutral on the different schools, showing the rational for, objections against, and counters against objections; but the last couple of chapters he shows his cards and does take sides and explains why. I read this book, and when I got to the tougher chapters such as on Kant, I read each chapter twice; then read the whole book again. I can't say I've done this with many books. For me an easy 5 out of 5.
