(Ukulele). This collection features 15 classic songs arranged by ukulele master, James Hill. In these remarkable arrangements, two distinct ukulele parts chord accompaniment and melody can be played in counterpoint at the same time by one player. The arrangements cater to both advanced beginner and experienced players and there is a warm-up section that introduces the player to the "Duets for One" concept. The book includes access to audio tracks online of all the arrangements performed by James Hill, for download or streaming, using the unique code inside the book. Songs are arranged for GCEA-tuned ukes and include: Georgia On My Mind * Summertime * Don't Get Around Much Anymore * The Glory of Love * Here Comes the Rain Again * L-O-V-E * Cheek to Cheek * Viva La Vida * and 7 more.
The description and James' video say it well enough; these arrangements put emphasis on the melody of the tune, while keeping the chorded background consistent to produce a sort of "duet" played on a single instrument. The part I was most surprised by is just how accessible the arrangements are. Watching James' play is always a bit deceiving (on account of how he's on a completely different level, and all), so I figured the book would be very difficult. While the tunes aren't easy, none of them are impossible. The sheet music and tab are both laid out very well, and seem to be inviting to the player. Plus, the included lessons in the beginning of the book set the player up for success, and lay out very clearly the expected level of knowledge before starting.
This certainly isn't a "starter" book, but it also doesn't pretend to be. If you are a semi-competent uke player who wants to focus on more melodic playing, buy this book and play the hell out of it.
Great choice of songs there is something for everyone. This book is far above many of the other song books I have purchased. The songs in Duets for One are presented in a new way giving me a bigger sound out of my happy humble ukulele.
