~ The Artist Transcription series usually contains transcriptions of tunes taken from commercially available recordings. To tie the transcriptions to actual recordings, one needs to purchase the original recordings - which usually means multiple CDs or multiple MP3 downloads. What makes this entry in the series unique is that the book is accompanied by a CD that contains five tunes that were specifically recorded for this book.
~ Each of the five transcriptions is preceded by a detailed analysis of how Jim voices his chords and constructs his phrases. Very informative. Each of the five transcriptions shows every note and chord Jim plays, including suggested fingering. Sorry, NO TABS. Four of the five tunes are written by Jim Hall; the fifth tune is composed by his wife Jane. Titles are "All Across the City", "Something Special", "Something Tells Me", "Subsequently" and "Three". By studying these tunes and the introductory analysis/notes you get insight into Jim's (and Jane's) approach to composition. The book/CD combo is highly recommended to any intermediate to advanced student of jazz guitar, especially fans of Jim Hall.
~ The 91 minute DVD contains a video record of the actual session that produced these recordings (plus a bonus tune, "Two's Blues"). In this video, Jim (accompanied by piano, bass, and drums) plays each tune, and then explains his picking and fingering techniques that add color and dimension, his chord voicing, the song structure, improvising melodies and rhythms, and playing with others - how to listen and knowing when to stay out of the way. The musical tracks and discussion are individually labeled so it is possible to skip around the video conveniently. The audio quality is good, and while the video quality is not great it is good enough to see Jim's fingering during the close-ups and discussions. The DVD comes with an informative 30-page booklet showing details of key phrases and chord voicing. As a stand alone item, the DVD/booklet is highly recommended as a lesson for intermediate to advanced jazz guitarists. Jim Hall proves himself to be a very good educator.

~ The combination of DVD/booklet and the Artist Transcriptions book/CD is a treasure and a master class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Interviews with several musicians that played on By Arrangement are also included, with Pat Metheny being the high point. Some great footage of Jim talking to the late John Lewis is also included. Clips showing Hall's upstate NY weekend home, his wife, his daughter and even their little dust-mop of a dog give you a picture of him not just as a player but as a human. Mr. Hall comes across as a very nice fellow, a man whose personality is every bit as warm as the music he plays.
I recently bought the DVD edition of this and it came as a double side disk, one side being PAL encoded for Europe with the other side being NTSC encoded for North America.
