Inner Child or in particular the lead single, I love Your Smile, shot Shanice to worldwide acclaim. There weren't too many places you could go back in the 1991-1992 period in which that song wasn't played.
The sad truth about the Inner Child album is that the I Love Your Smile single is the main thing people remember from this album. And that stinks, because this album had quite a bit of non-singles and secondary singles on it that were of value or that emitted some serious quality. And those songs included the excellent duet with Johnny Gill called Silent Prayer (single, track 7); the Minnie Riperton remake of the same name, Lovin You (single, track 9); Stop Cheatin' on Me (non-single, track 6), I Hate to Be Lonely (non-single, track 5); and others.
The Inner Child album was a mixture of love ballads, unrequited love ballads, some skits, straight up pop songs, R&B songs, and R&B pop songs. That mixture was done to let the public know that Shanice could sing, that she could sing R&B and pop songs, and that she had crossover potential.
At the end of the day, Inner Child was marketed at R&B fans, pop music fans, and young music fans who liked to hear Shanice sing and then have some good beats go along with that powerful voice of hers.
Positives of Inner Child: This album was carried by Shanice's vocal stylings and the beats put forth by Walden. The album was a pop album, and you have to give Motown Records and the other entities who had something to do with this album credit for knowing that. The album didn't try to be something that it was not.
Cons of Inner Child: There were some filler songs (tracks 8, 10, and 12) on the album that could have been left off of the album, but other than that the album was a quality effort that accomplished what it was going for.
In conclusion, I enjoyed taking another trip back to the New Jack Swing era with Shanice's Inner Child album. Back in 1991 there were soooooo many pop acts which meant that Shanice had to really bring it vocally on this album to get her due that year. And she did. The album went Gold, she performed the album's lead single on so many hit or well known shows at the time (1991-1992), and people got to know her as this young woman with a powerful singing voice.
