As a guitar/bass player, I was aware of the many YouTube displays of Vai's abilities, however, I never got around to buying any of his CDs, not knowing which one to choose. This is the perfect solution. Since its arrival, it has almost permanently inhabited my car's CD player. It even nudged into exploring the lydian scale: this sound is very prominent in Vai's solos. It is very obvious that Vai maintains extremely high standards concerning both his guitar sound and overall production.
With regard to the first sentence: this CD's insert has liner notes that do not just suck up to the artist in question. They describe various tunes and the albums they are taken from, in relation to the different stages of Vai's career, making it easier to select which full albums you may want to buy. The only thing you need to be aware of is that this Anthology was released in 2004, thereby ignoring the last decade of releases.
Trying to extend my collection of music as I am huge fan of guitar music. I brought this at the same time as Joe Satriani Anthology. Of the two this is my least favourite. Joe's stuff is more melodic and seems to make a tune, whereas on first listening this seems to be a lot more faffing around. I'm going to give it a longer chance, it may grow on me.
Saw Steve live recently - this album covers most of the material over his lengthy career leading up to his new album 'The Story of Light'. many of the numbers he plays live are included here. It's all good!
