I really enjoyed this book. It’s organized like the episodes of the television series Law and Order, the first half dedicated to the investigation and the second half to the prosecution. The investigation was instigated by a woman going to a mental health facility and confessing to killing her four year old son. A very respected homicide detective conducted a thorough investigation only to be told by the district attorney there was insufficient evidence to prosecute because of a quirk in the criminal law that made the confession inadmissable. Refusing to let the four year old boy’s death go unpunished, the detective approached a prosecutor he’d been told was the only one who might take on the case, the author of this book.
The investigation of the crime was unusual for several reasons. One was how much of the evidence establishing the guilt of the mother could not be used to prosecute. Another was the diversity of the potential witnesses, many of whom belonged to a sect of the Santeria religion. Few cops encounter the use of voodoo to obstruct their investigations.
I thought the trial portion of this book was particularly interesting. The author demonstrates considerable insight into not only the prosecution’s strategy but also that of the defense attorneys, perhaps because she was defense attorney prior to becoming a prosecutor.
