Is this book for you? If you are an international professional looking for your first job in Germany, this book is literally for you. All the examples and experiences that I share in this book are from German companies that hire – or don't hire – international professionals. You will find a clear path towards your first job in a German company. The strategies shared in this book have served hundreds of expats before you. They will also work for you. If you are a professional looking for a new challenge in another foreign country: This book will be very useful for you, too. Frank Sinatra might think that if you can make it in New York, you can „make it anywhere“, but let's face facts: The Big Apple is a „playground on a sunny afternoon” compared to Germany. The reasons for this will become obvious during the course of this book. Understanding the strategies that will get you a successful career in Germany, will make it easier for you to get a job anywhere in the world. (Including New York, dear Frank.) If you grew up in Germany, this book will still help you. To be frank: Our home country makes it very hard for everyone who isn't „DIN normed“. I only truly understood this after I had been living abroad for ten years, working in five different countries and four different cultures. The pressure to “fit in” is enormous, both in society and business. If you deviate from the norm, then the first instinct for too many HR managers is to cast you out. „Her degree is from a foreign university. I cannot evaluate her education.” „He is 50 years old. He will be too expensive. And can he even keep up with new developments in his age“? „She is exactly the right fit. But she just got married. She might want children very soon“. All this leads to „Better not take a risk“. And you are out. In this book I will share with you the strategies that helped me build a successful career over 27 years, despite the fact that I never fitted into the norm. This book will help you build a fulfilling and well paid career by being human and not a tool. And if you are an employer? An HR Manager? A headhunter? Take a journey into the world of international professionals and experience the jobmarket through their eyes, through their experiences. You will earn the money you spend on this book thousandfold back. You will discover a market of highly skilled, experienced and motivated professionals that have little alternative than to work for you. (If you are smart enough to offer them a job.) Some of my clients are well known companies like Trivago, Teamviewer, Trusted Shops and NGO's like the Red Cross, Friedrich Naumann Foundation or the Forest Stewardship Council. These organisations get literally thousands of job applications without much effort. Because they do one thing differently than most other German employers. After reading this book, you will understand 1. The job market in Germany. 2. Your position in this market in relation to all other candidates. 2. The megatrends that influence your success rate. 3. All decision makers who are involved in your employment. 4. Their motivation. 5. The ethical foundation for your success. 6. The practical tools for your success and how to use them. In short: In the first half of the book you will get a crystal clear idea about the market that you enter, its challenges and opportunities. In the second half of the book I will explain step by step how you get job interviews in Germany (or any other alien job market) while staying true to yourself and getting the best possible salary at the same time. You will be able to build a successful career by being true to yourself. “Entrepreneur Chris Pyak. A personal coach for every newcomer” “Handelsblatt“. 13. June 2014
When I first made the decision to search for a new career in Germany, I was terrified and a little lost on how to go about the process. Now, after reading this book, I feel that I have the confidence and knowledge I need to start getting interviews and finding an employer who is looking for me. I especially enjoyed how easy this book was to follow, and Pyak's voice, which was full of inspiration, motivation, and just the right amount of humor. Definitely look for an update to this review after I'm swimming in job offers!
