Notwithstanding the entirely acceptable omission of 1981's rather desperate Stars-on-45-style retro-medley "Holliedaze," this rather definitive Greatest Hits collection contains every single Hollies song that ever tickled the mass fancy of record buyers anywhere in the world, ever. Even the sleeve notes dispense with the scantest of biographical detail to present a veritable almanac of impressive global chart statistics, including mentions of #1 singles in Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Holland, South Africa, Singapore, Ireland, and Switzerland, as well as the UK. Of course, the Hollies were nothing if not adaptable. The grinning beat pop and "pap pap she waddy wops" of "Stay" through to the folky overtures of "I've Got a Way of My Own" (like an estrogen-free version of the Mamas and the Papas) were obviously marvelous and yet entirely generic responses to the overriding cultural dominance of the Beatles and Bob Dylan. But much the same thing can be said for the majority of their peers.

Still, the 1960s were a golden age for the Hollies and to hear the Graham Gouldman-penned "Bus Stop", "Carrie Anne" (part Kinks, part Beach Boys, part calypso), or the sweet-shop bubblegum of "Jennifer Eccles" is to be reacquainted with a sunny lost world of short skirts, Mini Coopers, and policemen on bicycles. Even the knee-jerk cod-psychedelia of "King Midas in Reverse"--a full-on trumpets-blaring, cello-charging microcosm of Revolver and Sgt. Pepper-isms--deserves revisionist plaudits. There is one newly recorded track on the album (featuring Allan Clarke's replacement, the former Move vocalist Carl Wayne) called "How Do I Survive". Regrettably, it's a disco-cum-AOR rock thing that sounds like the result of an unfortunate liaison between James Ingram and Foreigner. Still, when faced with the spine-tingling, classic gold timelessness of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and "The Air That I Breathe," it would matter not one jot if the bonus track was a three-part harmony rendition of a page out of the telephone directory. --Kevin Maidment

30年間探していた曲が見つかりました。thebabyという曲です。テレビ番組ではlethimgoとなっていたのでわからなかったのです。とてもいい曲なので聴いてみてください。他にも良い曲があり楽しめるCDですね。ポップスとはかくあるべしと言えるグループです。

本アルバムは主に１９６０〜７０年代にブレイクした、ホリーズのコンピレーション・アルバムである。ホリーズについて私は詳しくはないが、本アルバムの全４７曲のうちディスク２のトラック２２を除いて２００３年のデジタル・リマスタで、右トラック２２の「How Do I Survive」が同年“Abbey Road”スタジオ（ＥＭＩ）で収録されたものらしい（本アルバムのレーベルは「Capitol」だがＥＭＩ〔ユニバーサル〕傘下入りしている）。各ナンバーについては今更ながら個人的に注目するナンバーを挙げると、まずはやはりお馴染みの「Bus Stop」（６６年）である。６０年代としては斬新なポップ・（ソフト）ロック・テイストで８ビートのマイナー・サウンドがビートルズを彷彿とさせるものがある。ＵＳでトップ・チャートに入ったのは、これではなくてアメリカン・ポップ（ロック）・スタイルの漂う「I'm Alive」（６５年）である。個人的に嗜好にあるのが何と言っても「Just One Look」（６５年）である。オリジナルは“Doris Troy”が『ジャスト・ワン・ルック』（６３年）でフィーチャーしており、ホリーズ後に（“Anne Murray”ほか）リンダ・ロンシュタットが『 Living in the USA 』（７８年）でカバーしヒット・ナンバーとなっている。ホリーズ・バージョンはオリジナルをほぼ踏襲したＲ＆Ｂテイストながら、リンダはカントリー・ロックにアレンジしている。このほか“Bruce Springsteen”の「Sandy (4th July, Asbury Park) 」（７５年）、ビートルズ（“George Harrison”）の「If I Needed Someone」のフィーチャーである。このナンバーはビートルズとホリーズとでシングル・リリースが同一日（６５年１２月）と言ういわく付き？である（但しビートルズ・バージョンはアルバム『 Rubber Soul 』に収録）。代表的なホリーズ・ナンバーをほぼ網羅した保存版コンピレーション・アルバムと言うべきだろう。

今になって思えば、一番ビートルズ路線であったような気がしてきます。「ロックンロール＋カントリー＆ウェスタン＋リズム＆ブルース＋ポップス」の路線であんまり「ルーツ」を出さない。あくまでポップ路線上にある。ビートルズが途中でどんどん孤高の独自の世界を切り開いて行ったのと違ってこちらはこの路線から（外れてビートルズの路線を指向した時もあったのですが実力がね？）外れず、楽しく、コーラス重視のポップス路線でしかもブリティッシュです。そこがいいんですね。なんといっても「バスストップ」これだけで買う価値があります（言い過ぎか？）。でも聞くたびにそう思います。余談ですが荻野目洋子の「バスストップ（日本語バージョン）」もいいです。「アイム・アライブ」「恋は窓から」いいですよお。そして「喪服の女」（こいつにはびっくりしました。唯一の全米トップヒット）起死回生の逆転満塁ホームラン。繰り返しになりますが、今聞くとリバプールサウンドの魅力っていうのはこの「ホリーズ」が表現しているような気がします。

Hey Willyは最近のコンピにもなかなか入っていないシングル曲です（某雑誌特集でも見落としている･･･）初期のものも出来る限りステレオミックスを採用しています。全てがベストという訳ではなさそうなので☆4つですが、もちろん入門編としては最近のリリースでは最上のものです。あとは、うーんジャケは爽やかだけど安っぽいなあ。

I guess I would classify myself as a casual or average fan of " The Hollies" I am 51 years old & remember some of their hits on the radio. When I was around 20 I bought a cassette called " The Hollies Greatest Hits" it contained 12 tracks & was missing the song " The Air That I Breath", I have been replacing my old cassettes with C.D.s over the years & I bought a 9 track c.d. called " The Hollies Hits" but with only 9 tracks I was missing to many good songs so I went looking and found that familiar sudo psychedelic collogue cover that was on the old cassette & saw that the new c.d. had a bonus track & it was the missing song I wanted! I also noticed a c.d. called " The Hollies Greatest Hits" with a simple cover with a cloudy blue sky. "The Hollies greatest Hits" with the blue sky & white clouds had a staggering 47 tracks on it including everything on the other two plus many I had never heard! 47 songs from " The Hollies" well my first thought was I will get 13 great songs & 4 good cover versions & 20 weak filler songs! MAN was I WRONG!!! I never had a clue " The Hollies put out so many solid songs!!! Now I am not saying you are going to love all 47 songs but if your anything like me you are about to discover some real gems you may never have heard!!! Out of the 47 songs on this great sounding two disc set I would be hard pressed to claim 7 of them as filler, probably closer to 4. Another really cool thing about this " Greatest Hits set of The Hollies" is that it follows how every song charted around the world except for the previously unreleased 2003 song called " How do I Survive" a song that sounds like Hall & Oats meet The Doobie Brothers fusion. L.O.L. I almost never recommend the higher priced C.D. but in this case the few extra dollars is well worth it! I never thought I would ever be listening to awesome songs by " The Hollies" in 2017 but that is exactly just what I got done doing... yes that's right many of these songs I have never heard before & it only took listening to one time to know I like them a lot. So much so that this is now " The Hollies Greatest Hits" I can not do without!!! I listened to this on my Blue Ray player because it is the middle of the night...tomorrow I will listen to it on my massive stereo system to see if it has been remastered to play through different speaker channels I will up date you all when I find out. I listened to this " The Hollies Greatest Hits" on my 8 speaker $2000 dollar system & I am happy to report that set on " Stadium" the songs are in stereo creating that feeling of being in a swirling sound tornado!!! One example is the song " Jennifer Eccles" the wolf whistle at the end of the chorus jumps from right to left speaker & when it comes around again it jumps from left back to right. Beautiful sound on every track!!!

The sound quality of this double CD is excellent and offers a good overall selection of the Hollies early and later hits, many written by themselves. It shows that this band could rock with the best of them or move you to tears - their diversity is truly amazing. Some of the later songs I have found particularly refreshing as I lived and worked abroad for many years and lost touch with the music scene. Personally, although I enjoyed their earlier pop songs, I much prefer the post-Nash years when Terry Sylvester joined the band. His superb, close harmony is second to none, plus as an accomplished musician he took on the role of rhythm guitar - a great complement to Tony Hicks’ amazing guitar skills. Worthy of particular mention on CD 1 are Magic Woman Touch, Sandy, I’m Down and Gasoline Alley Bred (a great up-tempo piece).

CD2 contains the beautiful From Boulder to Birmingham which, for me, is the definitive version. There are those who will disagree in favour of EmmyLou Harris (who co-wrote the song), but the Hollies tight harmony, particularly in the closing bars of the song between Terry Sylvester and Tony Hicks, is absolute perfection. A performance of this song is featured on the Dutch Collection DVD – worth buying for this alone! Other lovely ballads of note are Lonely Hobo Lullaby and rock-ballad Write On, and the slow rock Son of a Rotten Gambler. In total contrast, we have the rockin’ numbers The Day That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee, Hey Willy (featuring some fantastic guitar work by Tony) and Star. Sadly, the brilliant Daddy Don’t Mind is somewhat subdued on this CD – catch the raunchy live version on the Dutch Collection DVD or on YouTube – it’s an amazing ‘powerhouse’ performance!

Less memorable (for me) are How Do I Survive, Searchin’ and the awful Jennifer Eccles.

Whilst they had some of their greatest hits in early 1970s, the Hollies developed and matured and were not afraid to diversify from their original happy pop sound. This period saw some of their best work. Unfortunately, this was not appreciated by the public, the media or their promoters as it should have been, certainly not in the UK and USA – to their shame!

In conclusion, a useful anthology of the songs, composers and recording dates is included. This bargain-priced CD is a must for Hollies fans, old and new, and given the fast delivery and quality packaging, you really can’t go wrong.
