There were two reasons for my giving up, one was the fact that Zoe spent all of Chapter 6 re-telling the story of how she met and fell in love with Eva to her good friend Elena. This is someone who she describes as her best friend and yet who didn’t already know? Maybe this a device to help those readers who haven’t read books 1 & 2 but for those of us who have, it’s frustrating and annoying.
The other reason I gave up was the two star reviewer’s comments that “you wait the whole book for something to happen that hasn't already been covered then find you have to buy the next one in the series as you only get half the story”. I’m afraid life is just too short to waste my time like this…not sure if I’ll find the time or inclination to go back to this…if I do, I’ll edit this review…
I'm sorry to say that I had to force myself to finish this and I won't bother with any more. Had the series been edited harder, stopped being quite so immature and so repetitive, it could have been good.
The relationship between Zoe and Eva intesifies apace and again they find themselves in challenging circumstances. This is a story that must resonate strongly with the post war experience of european migrants to Australia in the 40's and 50's. The bravery of the women rising above the disapproval and persecution for their unabashed lesbian love is admirable. Although fiction they feel very real. This could've happened in some form or other.
After the intensity of the previous book (the the length that went hand in hand with its intensity) this third book in the Intertwined Souls series seemed to me like it was sort of like a chance for readers of the series to catch our breaths.
The novel starts in Australia in 1950. Zoe and Eva have settled into their lives. The jump in time threw me off just a little at first, but, soon I had figured out what was going on and got back into the flow of the story. There’s still plenty of plot that includes Earl, and Elena and Frederick are eagerly awaiting a new addition to their family, also I did notice that Henry was a little absent which bummed me out just a tiny little bit.
Still, the new characters that we met in the second half of the story, both on Eva and Zoe’s journey to Greece and once they got to Greece totally made up for the lack of Henry. They, along with so much of the rest of the book, just filled up Eva and Zoe’s back story so fully. I’ve read a lot, lot, lot of serieses, in all genres. And even just three stories in, this one already has such a rich world with so much awesome interconnectedness and such a history.
I also love it that I’m not getting past the place that wayy back when I had stopped reading and so around every ‘corner’ of the book is another surprise that makes me either wince or cheer (though the cheering is mostly internally so that I don’t disturb those around me). Another great entry into the Intertwined Souls series for sure.
"Hidden Truths" is the third installment in the Intertwined Souls series. The series itself follows the relationship between Eva and Zoe, from their meeting during WWII on different sides of the conflict, their falling in love and the various struggles that they have. In this book, the two are living in Australia in the 1950's and news arrives that forces the two to move once again. They have to go back to Greece because of Zoe's inheritance and then decide to return to Germany.
This particular book is a great look at post-war society and at how things were in different parts of the world in the 1950's. The two characters are placed back into places and situations that caused them pain and distress in the past and this always makes for interesting reading, particularly in the context of a relationship. This was another incredibly well-written book that brought me even closer to two of my favorite characters. I can't wait for book #4.
