内容紹介

A mere 10 years ago, hellebores were considered connoisseurs' plants -- subdued in coloration, hard to find, and the subject of much snobbery. Today, however, they are among the hottest perennials, thanks to their early bloom, long-lasting flowers, shade tolerance, handsome foliage, and the profusion of new colors and forms that have recently become available. Authors Cole Burrell and Judith Tyler have produced what is arguably the definitive book on this genus, packed with up-to-the-minute, comprehensive information on growing, maintenance, design, hybridization and selection, and trouble-shooting. This lavishly illustrated volume will interest hellebore lovers at every level of interest.

レビュー

" This thorough and reliable book is the most up-to-date available on the genus at present."
-- Tony Lord, Plantsman, September 2006

" [Burrell and Tyler] have produced what is most likely the most complete work on the subject."
-- John Bagnasco, Garden Compass, September/October 2006

" The allure of the Christmas rose and the remarkable availability of the Lenten rose have heightened the rising popularity of these treasured perennials. Co-authors Colston Burrell and Judith Knott Tyler capture all of this and bring to light many of the new seed strains and hybrids in this monograph on the "Helleborus" genus."
-- Richie Steffen, American Gardener, September 2006

5つ星のうち 5.0 A Wonderful Book 2014/2/22

Very few people know what hellebores are. I became interested in them when I spotted some in a woodland garden in our area in March of 2012. My next door neighbor had one or two common ones in her front garden. That's when I learned their name. I googled them and was blown away by the colorful variety of these plants. I ordered a "Christmas Rose" and the first bloom appeared on Dec. 22, and the 2nd on Dec. 23! I was amazed! Yes, some wiil bloom in late Nov. and through the winter into spring. The "Guide" is very comprehensive in every aspect of varieties, planting, care, diseases, history, etc. It is sometimes a bit technical but that's OK. The book containes many nice pictures though I would have liked more of them - esp. some colorful close-ups. Never-the-less, the price was right for the book and its content is invaluable. Once the hellebore "bug" bites you, You're hooked. Again, It's a wonderful book!

Very good book. Voluminous info on hellebores, most often known to
us gardeners as Lenten or Christmas roses. And,happily, it's useful and accessible information. Now I'll be better prepared to decide whether or not to pay the higher prices at the plant nurseries.
One particularly useful thing that I learned is that certain of the newer varieties don't get as large as the older varieties. I'm hoping that will translate into a large grouping of plants that doesn't begin to look "blowsy"as the plants spread and age.

I purchased this a Christmas gift. It was a lovely book and was very detailed for a Hellebores fanatic in our family. I would highly recommend this book for a novice or veteran hellebores collector.
