Please can we have practical CD cases?
I must point out that the three star rating for this CD does NOT in any way relate to the music of Belinda Carlisle which is great and in itself deserves a five star rating. I have given this product a lower rating because of the CD case that it came in.
Traditional plastic cases are a practical solution for holding CDs but they are clearly detrimental to the environment so I've often wondered why manufactures don't just switch to using cardboard ones. I have several cardboard CD cases with a gatefold design that contain only one piece of plastic in the interior to hold the disc. This solution uses much less plastic but is still practical. If the plastic used is recyclable then that's all to the good. However, it is possible to produce a workable CD case without using any plastic at all. A great example of this is the one used for the double album 'Aerial' by Kate Bush (see photo). I can imagine that Kate may well have insisted upon this cardboard only design.
The Belinda Carlisle CD case that I received does actually consist of 100% cardboard which is a good thing so what's the problem here? Well, it's down to design. The case is a gatefold (see photo) and rather like traditional vinyl album sleeves the disc is inserted inside the cardboard on one side. This design works fine for vinyl where the record comes in a paper jacket and is easy to remove. However, the same design simply doesn't work for CDs. First of all, it can be difficult to remove the disc from the cardboard case because it's held in tightly and if you remove it with your thumb and forefinger you inevitably finger-mark the playing side. Secondly, the case is so thin that when you place it in your CD rack it's not that easy to read the artist/album name (see photo). I have a saying:
'If it's not practical, it's no good'.
Given the not inconsiderable intelligence of mankind, why is it that bad design so often prevails? It's perfectly possible to produce a CD case that is both useable and kind to the planet. Kate Bush's 'Aerial' double album CD case works well; the two discs are easy to remove and the thickness of the case is about the same as my cardboard gatefold cases with the plastic insert which, in turn, are only slightly thinner than the plastic cases . The same design could also be used for a single album, i.e. a three section gatefold rather than a two section gatefold, but with just one slot for the single disc. The extra cardboard section could then be used to provide information about the artist/album or for pictures. 'Hey guys', it might even be possible to improve upon this innovative design so perhaps a nationwide competition should be held. I hereby challenge all you 'creatives' out there to grab your used cereal packets/scissors and get cracking (where's Konnie Huq when you need her)!
I think it's time for CD manufactures to 'put on their big boy pants' and start making CD cases that are both 'green' and fit for purpose, after all it's easier to grow trees than make oil (that takes millions of years). Amazon, I'm begging you please - STOP selling CD's in cases that are not practical for everyday use. We have a long and beautiful relationship which I hope will continue on far into the future, so please be understanding. No matter what though, our hearts will go on (cue music).

20. Head Over Heels 4:00
21. We Got The Beat 3:46

This is "Heaven On Earth"
Commercially, this is her best album, but my favorite from Belinda is "Runaway Horses". It's her most artistic album. That said, "Heaven On Earth" is definitely classic solo Belinda. Every song on this album is great from start to finish. There isn't a track I want to skip when listening to it. The stand out song is the title track, but there are album tracks that are just as fantastic. Two of my favorite tracks are "Fool For Love" and "Nobody Owns Me". They are great bops. I remember when first hearing the title track on the radio, I always missed the full song or when the DJ would say who it was singing. I had known Carlisle from "Mad About You " and that she was part of "The Go-Go's", but had no idea it was her at first until a few weeks later upon first listening to it. She has a wonderful and unique voice. This is definitely an album you should own if you are a fan of Belinda!
