"Music for People with Four Ears"
Although I bought "Hearts" on LP back in 1975, I decided against buying a CD4 hifi and was never able to hear it in its quadraphonic glory... until now! (To play a Quadradisc, one needed not only a special decoder, but a special cartridge with a Shibata stylus and that was over the budget of an 18-year-old working at the college library.)
This album had 3 hit songs on it, but I'd say it's the band's strongest recording since "Homecoming" and, in terms of consistency of songwriting, pretty much towers over their later CDs with the exception of "Hourglass" and "Here and Now." The SACD was remastered by Audio Fidelity, from a 4-channel reel to reel tape. Although the original LP notes don't explicitly credit the remix engineer, it was mixed at AIR Studios so most likely George Martin and/or Geoff Emerick did the mix, which is quite enjoyable.
The quad mix often gives songs individual personalities. The band are mostly up front, with additional instruments being heard in the rear channels, like the tabla on the amazing "Company" or the multiple voices on "People in the Valley." At times, George Martin's string arrangements with their minor chords are like a chilly wind at your back, keeping things from getting too sweet ("Daisy Jane," "Bell Tree"). On "Woman Tonight," America surrounds the listener and all 4 channels are very active with acoustic and electric instruments.
I've heard this album on LP, CD, and as a download. In terms of absolute sound quality, I'd give "Hearts" high marks and this SACD sounds at least as good as the LP on my system, but it's not quite up there with its predecessor, "Holiday," which has a very rich sound and bass that goes way deep (even on the Collectables label reissue of a few years ago). Maybe that's because "Holiday" (a stereo CD) was recorded at AIR, while "Hearts" was done at The Record Plant in California?

Great album to hear in multi-chanel sound from this SA-CD or the original quadraphic mix
My favorite album of a group never seems to be their number one album by sales or public acclaim. Such is the case with America - Hearts.
I heard this album in its original quadraphonic mix and prefer it in multi-channel audio, so I was especially happy to see it released by Audio Fidelity. I really enjoyed playing it again after so may years, and thought this was simply the original quadraphonic mix, but apparently it is a remix.
Though I've read some conflicting views on the new 4.0 mix, for me the point is that with much of the denser "wall of sound" pop music (both R&B and rock & roll), a surround presentation seems to give the human ear a better chance of picking out more detail, kind of like an audio version or "swirled" ice cream (yes, my spoon always follows the swirls).
I'm so happy that Audio Fidelity is releasing surround SA-CD discs; I hope they'll get the rights to Doobie Brothers "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits", an especially dense stereo mix that comes alive in the original quadraphonic mix.
I should note that my dedicated Sony SA-CD players (C555ES and SCD-C2000ES) can't read the multi-channel audio area of any of the Audio Fidelity SA-CDs, though my Sony BDP-S790ES Blu-Ray planer and Pioneer DV-610AV can (thus engendering some re-configuring and multi-channel switch connections to play them on my two A/V systems).
The hue of the Audio Fidelity discs along with their smaller production runs made me wonder if they were done on recordable media and if this was the cause of their incompatibility with some of my players, but the person who responded from Audio Fidelity was offended by that suggestion, leaving the issue unexplained.

America Sounding At Their Best!

(Multichannel SACD reviewed)
With snow rapidly falling, it was a good time to fire up the audio gear and give the "Hearts" SACD by America a listen.
This is a 4-channel SACD mixed by usual Audio Fidelity culprits--Steve Hoffman and Steve Marsh. The former Steve has a reputation for being heavy handed with the mix--especially with EQ. However, with this mix he used a much lighter hand not only with EQ but also in channel placement.
Perhaps he's learning. Or perhaps the source material was good enough that he could let things be. Whatever the reason, this is a well done mix. The vocals and guitars are clean, the bass, mids and highs are all very good--as good as I've ever heard America (except live, of course.)
For the most part, the multichannel mix doesn't call attention to itself. Except for an occasional slip, nothing pulls your attention in a specific direction unless it makes sense that it should. Mostly the mix simply emerges you in sound. That's the way a multichannel mix should sound!
The source material used for the SACD is not stated (it seldom is!) The original recording was produced and arranged by George Martin. It was engineered by Geoff Emerick--both well known names. The recording sessions were done at the Record Plant (San Francisco and Los Angeles.) I've been in the Record Plant in Sausalito so I am, too a small degree, aware of the sound in their studios. I hear that reflected in the SACD.
Overall a very decent SACD that combines America at or near their best with a more than acceptable mix. Well done Audio Fidelity!

5 for the music and 2 for the way the disc sounds. Steve Hoffman should be ashamed of himself......

I am giving this 5 stars because this contains one has one of my favorite songs on it.(Daisy Jane). Where I would give the actually recording itself is a "2" in 4.0 format. I am beginning to think that anything that Steve Hoffman has his hand in for any type of remaster or remix is purely for the money and not for the art of the recording. At one time his name was held in high esteem. But these discs he is in charge of from "Audio Fidelity" all remind me of when CD's (compact discs) first came out and no one bothered to "remaster" them in the format they were begin used in. Meaning the masters they were using for vinyl with all the compression still there. I have the vinyl of this and it sounds GREAT!
This is lifeless and almost not worth the price of the disc. I own 7 other of these discs and they all sound like crap. so, Steve Hoffman = sounds like crap. I also own the 5.1 DVD audio version of "Homecoming" and that sounds UNBELIEVEABLE. If you want to hear what these sound sound like buy that disc. It will blow you out of the water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and that is what all of these disc Steve Hoffman should be sounding like. and don't.

A good album from the America trio at their peak.

This is definitely an album when the original trio of America were at their peak. Has the known hits of Daisy Jane, Woman Tonight, and Sister Golden Hair. But, People in the Valley, The Story of a Teenager, and Seasons are standouts also.
