Different from the Guinness books of my youth but still fun

It has been many years since I purchased a Guinness World Records book. I remember pouring over every page of the Guinness books that I grew up with. Recently I found out that, much to my surprise, that they were still popular with today's children. I saw the 2014 edition mentioned on the Ellen Show and ordered one from Amazon. It was different than I remembered but still a lot of fun.

I can see now why the book is still popular. The pages are large and generously adorned with tons of photos. Where the copies that I grew up with also had a lot of photos they had more of an encyclopedic look. The 2014 edition looks more like a graphic novel or a webpage designed for children. All of the strange facts and trivia are there, just presented in a more modern way.

The Guinness World Records is a perfect "bathroom-book." The small sections are short and entertaining, just the thing to distract you for 5-10 minutes. In addition to the large, photo-heavy articles, the 2014 edition has kind of a film-strip feature on the bottom of many of the pages that expand on one theme, such as which entertainer, politician, or other celebrity has the most Twitter followers.

I like this newer version but I guess that I forgot that Guinness always has been designed more for the young person that I used to be, not the mid-fifties guy that I am now. I donated my copy to a local elementary school. The kids will love it!

A wealth of information not found anywhere else.

I first bought this book when my granddaughter was 9, and my son said she read it over and over again from cover to cover, which was unusual for her. She'd also discuss information she found with him. This is now her 4th book and she looks forward to receiving it; I enjoy watching her become really excited when she opens this gift. She told me she was hoping I'd bought it for her. I told her that her dad had told me she enjoys the book, and she said she finds new information each time she reads it and her younger siblings enjoy the pictures as she reads the book to them.

The pages are heavy-duty, and they're filled with bright pictures and a format that holds her interest as well as that of younger kids. There is also a 3D format with a free app she can download. She is a person who enjoys learning about new and different things, and she Googles for additional information on a subject she is particularly interested in. She even found a subject for one of her school papers!

It's well worth its price - a format that's interesting even for kids who can't yet read, a source of unusual information all in one place, and a resource for school work and all family members all in one book!

I have been a fan of the Guinness World Records books for a long time. The 2014 version is large and very colorful. The binding and paper both seem to be of good quality. The table of contents is easy to use. Each double layout features a different topic. The book is full of images, and the facts are fun to read. This book is fun for both adults and children. Some of the images may be slightly disturbing to some readers. (A few pages I couldn't even read completely at because I was appalled at what some people will do to their body for a world record!) Overall, I found the book very interesting. It's a great conversation starter. The only drawback is that it only includes a small subset of facts in each topic. I wish there was an appendix or additional pages listing more world record facts.
