Glorious! What more can I say? Sir Thomas conducts this performance to perfection. Nobody has ever done it better, and nobody ever will. I don't know how many conductors have recorded performances but no one can outshine this classic recording from 1959. There is are some very dull and average performances on disc on the market - I have had one or two of them in my collection but Beecham and the RPO are very special indeed. The brass at the very opening make an impact that will have you jumping out of your chair such is their power and musicality. The solo violin is joy to hear and the full orchestra produce such rapturous music making it is totally infectious. I always though that at this period (late 50's) the Philharmonia were the top recording orchestra in this country. On the evidence of this recording Royal Philharmonic are their equal.
I have already mentioned the date of this recording (1959) and that my make some people hesitate on the grounds of the recorded sound for the early stereo era. Don't think about it, the remastering is a total triumph. The recording made in the Kingsway Hall London, it opulent, warm and incredibly detailed. Indeed, you might think it is a modern digital recording. Full marks and top honours to the engineers who have remastered this magical recording.
I have known and loved this work for nigh on 40 years but the recording has made me reevaluate and love all the more this classic romantic work, which under Beecham's baton shines as brightly as the sun!
