This book is about building enterprise applications using the incredibly powerful Google Script. Starting with the basics of using the script editor you will learn the process and best practices of application building by working through detailed examples of real world applications used by thousands of people. Once you have mastered the techniques in this book you will be ready to apply your knowledge to create powerful applications for your business and solve everyday challenges through automation. Every developer should have this book in their tool kit for the references and unique information it provides.
James Ferreira managed public communications for two successful state political campaigns; served as the Chief Information Officer for the New Mexico Office of Attorney General; migrated the first government agency to Google Apps; speaks at conferences across the nation about implementing new technology; wrote software to extend Google Apps that serves more than half a million users worldwide and published numerous technology articles including the Google Enterprise blog.
With every other scripting book I've used they provide a final overall script for each example. In this book snippets of code is interspersed with the explanation and usually where the code is supposed to reside in the overall code is never quite clear.
I find this book an exercise in frustration when following along trying to get any of the examples to actually function. Eventually I usually manage to get there but generally I've managed to waste hours in the process.
I would suggest just using the online Google script references or other online options if you want to get a good handle on Google scripting.
The book walks you through a series of increasingly ambitious projects: starting from a simple script to manipulate a spreadsheet, and all the way up to building an entire workflow which involves sending and receiving email via web UI's. If there is only comment to make.. Don't overdo it! Google Script has a sweet spot for small to medium apps, which is hard to beat. But don't be afraid to reach for the powertools at some point either (aka, the official Google API's).
With the help of the book I was able to get to the point where I could understand the online documentation well enough to complete two fairly trivial web apps to capture some team member input and store it to my Google Drive, make backups and notify me when certain kinds of input were collected.
If you are interested in Google Apps Script and want to see some actual code and the thought process on how to use Apps Script, then this book is the best out there right now.
