Nel 2020 la premiata ditta Jagger & Richards non potendo andare in tour causa covid, ha pensato bene di raggranellare qualche dollaro (o euro/sterlina) immettendo nel mercato alcune “chicche” veramente speciali. La prima è stata rilasciata ad aprile con il singolo "Living in a Ghost Town", non male, ma se non fossero stati gli Stones ad inciderlo forse nessuno se ne accorgeva. Le vere prelibatezze sono i live pubblicati a settembre: quello del 1989 registrato ad Atlantic City (già recensito) e questo Brussels Affair incluso nella ristampa di “Goats Head Soup” in versione deluxe e super deluxe (CD/Vinile/DVD/BR)
Partiamo dal live Brussels Affair
In realtà questo concerto era già uscito sotto forma di bootleg e in un’edizione super deluxe box set nel 2011 (e super, super costosa), ora ad un prezzo accettabile è disponibile in tutti i formati fisici e digitali ed in svariate confezioni. Il concerto è stato tenuto alla Forest National Arena di Bruxxels (mercoledì 17 ottobre 1973) ed era dedicato in particolare ai fans francesi, infatti la Francia era stata esclusa dalla tournée europea perché gli Stones (in realtà il solo Keith Richards e l’allora compagna Anita Pallenberg) rischiavano l’arresto qualora avessero messo piede sul suolo francese per una pendenza per problemi di droga. Lasciamo la cronaca e veniamo al concerto.
Personalmente divido la fase concertistica dei Rolling Stones i tre momenti principali:
il primo quello dei 60, con registrazioni brevi e nemmeno tanto buone dal punto di vista audio,
il secondo periodo è quello dei “70 ed inaugurato dall’ultima pubblicazione Decca: “Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!”, seguito da “Ladies And Gentlemen 1972 Exile On Main Street tour” (edito dal 1982 al 2010 in varie e confezioni LP/ CD/DVD), dal doppio “Love You Live” del 1977 ed infine da “Some Girls Live In Texas 1978” (edito nel 2011). Il terzo periodo è quello che parte dagli anni “80 e, seppure con diversi cambiamenti è quello attuale (concerti tenuti quasi sempre in grandi stadi, effetti speciali, spettacoli faraonici ed un suono molto più mainstream).
Brussels è il terzo live con Mick Taylor ed ha un suono più blues rispetto a quelli che verranno dopo, con pianoforte, meno tastiere elettroniche e tante chitarre (con la slide di Mick Taylor in evidenza).
Il repertorio è simile a “Ladies And Gentlemen” (il tour dell’anno prima in Usa, ha 10 brani su 15 uguali) ma è abbastanza diverso da quello poi solitamente suonato nei concerti dagli anni “80 in poi. Troviamo quattro brani da “Goats Head Soup” (è il tour di lancio dell’album), altri quattro brani da “Exile On Main Street”, tre estratti da “Let It Bleed” ed una canzone per ciascuno dagli album “Sticky Fingers” e “Beggras Banquet”, oltre a due singoli e tutt’oggi presenti in scaletta (Honky Tonk Women e Street Fighting Man). La caratteristica di questo concerto sta nella chitarra di Mick Taylor caratterizzata da un suono blues appreso alla scuola dei Bluesbreakers di John Mayll e, con tutto rispetto per (il grande) Ron Wood, è un suono diverso, un suono che ci riporta al Blues Rock degli anni 60 e 70.
“Gimme Shelter” siamo ormai abituati ad ascoltarla con il duetto Jagger/Lisa Fisher, qui il clou è l’assolo di chitarra; menzione al giro di basso di Bill Wyman. Stessa cosa vale “You Can't Always Get What You Want”, quasi 11 minuti di puro rock (blues) con le chitarre di Taylor e Richards che duettano dall’inizio alla fine, con grande assolo di sax nella parte centrale e come sempre tutto si svolge sulla base del basso di Wyman e della batteria di Charlie. Mai ascoltata una versione del genere (da brivido!!!). “Midnight Rambler” tirata allo spasimo per 13 minuti, bluesata come non mai, con Jagger che oltre ad un grande assolo di armonica “ingrossa” la voce per farla sembrare più nera.
“Brown Sugar” apre il concerto (Trevor Lawrence al sax), e pur essendo strepitosa con il suo riff d’apertura preferisco le versioni con il sax di Bobby Keys. Da “Goats Head Soup” sono eseguite quattro canzoni, si parte con “Star, Star” (qui con il titolo originale “Starfucker” poi omesso nella versione ufficiale su disco), veramente bella prova corale del gruppo. Seguono: “Dancing With Mr. D.”, “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” ed infine “Angie”. Quattro belle esecuzioni, mi piace in particolare “Dancing With Mr. D.” e la bella versione di “Angie”, con Billy Preston in evidenza al pianoforte e all’organo, meglio della versione in studio presente in “Goats Head Soup”. Brani che, ad eccezione di “Angie”, nel seguito saranno eseguiti raramente. Sono un po’ considerate delle canzoni “minori” del songwriting rollingstoniano, ma che avrebbero fatto la fortuna di una qualsiasi band di R’N’R. Oggi in concerto eseguono solo i grandi hits, del resto con un repertorio vasto come hanno difficilmente potrebbero fare diversamente.
Immancabile e sempre coinvolgente “ Honky Tonk Women”. I quattro brani di “Exile On Main Street” sono “Happy” un classico presente in tutti i concerti con la voce solista di Richards, “Tumbling Dice” altra bella ballatona, ed i due Rock and Roll “All Down The Line” e “Rip This Joint” con il sax in evidenza. Chiude lo spettacolo la canzone in assoluto più eseguita nei concerti con oltre (ad oggi) 1160 esecuzioni: “Jumpin' Jack Flash” mentre il bis è per l’hit del 1968 “Street Fighting Man” anche questa molto tirata e con finale incandescente.
Nella band suonano (e cantano) tutti a grande livello, inutile sprecare parole per Charlie “metronomo” Watss o per Richards, la chitarra ritmica (che fa anche assoli ) più famosa del Rock. La Band è coesa e s’intende alla perfezione in ogni canzone, Grande Rock’N’Roll/Grande Band.
Due parole sulla ristampa del box “Goats Head Soup”, che contiene oltre al concerto, l’album rimasterizzato, un secondo disco con inediti versioni alternate ecc., un Blu-ray, un libro e vari riproduzioni di poster; il tutto è sicuramente una gustosa prelibatezza per fan e collezionisti. In alcuni brani del disco degli inediti suona Jimmy Page, ma francamente non se ne sente la presenza, ha sicuramente fatto di meglio, molto ma molto di meglio.
Consegna Amazon puntuale come sempre.
Dimenticavo ... nella decade degli anni 70 sono stati pubblicati altri due live del serie "From The Vault" tutti i formati CD/Vinile/DVD/BR/Digitale:
- "The Marque Club Live 1971" - edito nel 2015 con Mick Taylor
- "L.A. Forum Live 1975" - edito nel 2014 con Ronnie Wood
a mio modestimmo parere, pur essendo degli ottimi Live, sono entrambi inferiori a questo Brussels Affair.

As a huge Stones fan, I have to admit that Goats Head Soup consistently ranked as one of my least favorite albums. Although it contained some great songs (Dancing With Mr. D, Heartbreaker, Angie), as a complete album, it just never did it for me. This boxset made me re-evaluate my opinion.
I originally bought the box for the live disc (Brussels Affair - live 1973) and for the disc of rarities/alternate mixes (Scarlet, Criss Cross, Dancing with Mr. D alternate mix, etc), but wound up thoroughly revisiting the original album and enjoying the great book and mini tour posters.
The Brussels Affair disc is a superb live show from 1973. Great set list, great performance and great energy. This disc alone was almost worth the price of the box to me.
The Rarities disc contains some excellent outtakes and mixes and really gives some additional depth to recording sessions. The newly remixed album sounds great, and while it’s still not my favorite, my opinion has definitely improved. I don’t have a Dolby Atmos system, so I can’t comment on the Blu-Ray sound quality.
The enclosed hardcover book gives a great background on the making of the album & tour is loaded with photos and even includes rough mock ups of the original album cover concept. As an added bonus, the mini recreations of tour posters from that era are just plain cool. The poster for the cancelled Cardiff show with the dragon has always been a favorite Stones image of mine.
Final thought - I really enjoy owning this box and it’s definitely worth it if you’re a Stones or just a Mick Taylor fan.

I am a CD box set collector, and have been reluctant to purchase this one because Goats Heads Soup has been on my “like” list, not my “essential” list. I have some awesome box sets like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot from Wilco and Automatic for the People by REM, but also have some I am disappointed with like Neil Young, T. Rex, etc. This version is “essential” to any Stones fan, as it is a whole new world of Rolling Stone. The quality of this remaster is definitely noticeable! I hear new instruments clear as if they are the room with me, even heard Mick say “good god!” in Mr. D. In addition, the bonus tracks are actually good. However, the real gem is the live disk. The versions of Gimme shelter and You can’t always get what you want with Bobby Keyes and Billy Preston are marvelous. Keith is in perfect style and Mick Taylor cuts up the lead guitar. It has now replaced my Get Your Ya Ya’s Out for best go to for live Stones. Unlike many sets, the price was right for a set of this caliber. It includes posters, three cds, and a coffee size book full of cool pictures and an educational write up regarding the making of the record and the associated tour. My order came in excellent condition and ahead of schedule as well. Any past critics of this record (including me) can now take a slice of humble pie with their soup. In summary, dinner is served, Bon Appétit!

I can tell you why the disparity in prices and it's sort of 2 reasons. First: They're The Stones who have survived deaths, imprisonment (for wee spell), and have survived being exiled from the native island in the sun..er, uh make that rain, major heroin addiction to just name a few road blocks and they've done it for 50 - F*****G - years while creating music that would become the soundtrack for most fans of Rock 'n' Roll and outliving their only real equals by more than 40 yrs and those equals happened to be the most beloved and influential (a better word would be INSPIRATIONAL) band this planets has ever seen. Yet the Stones were the only band that could be mentioned in the same breath as those 4 Lads.
Now with that in mind you'll see why the the Second is: Content. You think it's just some CD's and a DVD but there is also a huge Coffee Table book that enclose the 3 CDs and the DVD, with hundreds of glorious color photos of the band from '73 -ish era. Then there are 4 reprinted posters from what I guess is the post 'Exile', pre-Goats Head tour, and they are nice little added compliments. So people who have no use for those things should stick with 3 CDs. I'll tell ya, I think I figured out why GHS did not blow me away when it came out. Mind you, I've played it many, many times over the years, even if it wasn't my favorite, let's face it - It's a Stones album and if you're a fan you still listen nut just not with the frequency of of the previous four.
So it was simply a case of GHS having to follow one of the most powerful runs of consecutive A+ titles that any band has ever created. A band who was in a zone - a zone that was surely helped by the late-great producer Jimmy Miller - and it was the kind of zone that the tip-top artists all go thru but typically a band is lucky to have two of those albums. Most of the top A+ bands only have one great album with a few lesser ones that shine from the glow of the one great one. No, The Stones had four legitimate A+ albums in a row. The albums Stones author Rich Cohen called "The Golden Run". From Beggars Banquet (which ironically followed what most fans and critics was their worst album - Their Satanic Majesties Request), Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile On Main Street.
