This collection of short stories is extremely impressive as a book, and also particularly remarkable even when each story is viewed separately by itself. It is, of course, very demanding to build suspense in a short-story format. However, the author still is able to fulfill the elaborateness by incorporating complicated themes and plots into each story line. The characters are both believable and relatable. I believe the main element that amazes me the most is the unpredictability. One kind of ending is an intentional lapse that makes it seem anticlimactic, but if read carefully, it actually contains subtleness that is meaningful and thought-provoking. The other kind of ending is the complete destabilization of what you think would happen; the impact is able to make the story incredibly compelling. This book definitely shows the theme of violence being commonplace, also is able to infiltrate horizontally, whether it is an overtly physical violence or a symbolic, soft power in real life.
