Adrian Fernandez is the manager of the Microcontroller Customer Experience team at Texas Instruments and holds a B.S.E.E from the University of Texas at Austin. In his role, he is responsible for defining the microcontroller development ecosystem and augmenting the ways developers interact and develop with TI microcontrollers. In recent years, Adrian has focused on the LaunchPad Evaluation Development Platform to create a low-cost, easy-to-use and friendly tool for enabling people of all experience levels to start making stuff with microcontrollers. Through developing the LaunchPad ecosystem, Adrian has had the pleasure of working and interacting with the online & maker community. Adrian lives in Dallas, TX with his better-half Ellen and pug Ollie.

Dung Dang is an applications engineer for Texas Instruments Microcontroller Group and holds an M.S.E.E from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Serving various roles in new product development, he is responsible for shaping new microcontroller definitions and using the products to realize and enable innovative applications. Dung has also defined and driven several microcontroller software solutions and development tools.

Within the area of development tools, Dung started the work on the LaunchPad since its inception, created the very first BoosterPacks, and has since continued to develop and support the ecosystem surrounding this tool. Through this work, he has been privileged and fortunate to witness the excitement and the warm reception of the LaunchPad in the community. This inspires Dung to keep on making and contributing to this incredible and ever-growing community of makers.

Dung lives in Dallas, TX with his wife Kacy, who lovingly puts up with his late nights, and Buck, a Border Collie who never fails to outsmart him.

Arduino互換は色々存在しますが本書はＴＩ社の１６ビットマイコンのMSP430G2553を使った超低価格（１０ＵＳＤ）な評価ボードであるLaunchPadでEnergiaというArduino互換環境を動かす解説書です。MSP430は歴史のある１６ビットＲＩＳＣマイコンですが私が試した限りでは本家のＡＶＲ８よりも高効率なオブジェクトを生成します（２～４割程度）。EnergiaはMSP430,MSP430Xv2,LM4F120(Cortex-M4)を2013年12月現在でサポートしておりハードウェア・形状互換こそありませんがArduinoIDE互換な環境が無償で提供されておりどうしても必要なシールドが無いと困る方を除けば充分「Arduino互換」を味わえます。オプションでSPI表示のＬＣＤモジュール・ブザー・センサを搭載した拡張ボード（Arduinoシールドとは形状・機能互換無し）も提供されており本書はそれを前提としています。ＴＩらしいというか我が道を行く感は無きにしもあらずですがＩＤＥ互換は相応に有るのでArduinoのスケッチは概ね動作します。私はＭＳＰ４３０・ＭＳＰ４３０Ｘｖ２が好みなのでArduinoハードウェア互換の縛りが無ければMSP430+Energiaの方がコスパ・性能・コード効率・アーキテクチャ（これは私見）の点で好みです。

the layout of the book is a bit dense and I found it difficult to read, also the diagrams are not in colour. Most of the time this does not matter but the systems diagram of the launchpad board confused me because it is a poor scan of the colour version available on line.

Technically the book is so so. It builds the readers knowledge using a number of simple programs written in the Energia programming language (in simple terms Arduino for the MSP430 Launchpad) rather than the Ti development tools. To get the best out of the examples as well as the Launchpad board you need to buy the "Educational booster pack" which is a plug in board (as far as I can tell not available outside of the USA) however there are instructions for using a bread board and individual components.

I think if you are a beginner to microcontroller programming and you follow the book you will learn quite a bit about the subject and be able to develop your own simple systems for the Launchpad. However if you have some experience in programming and are interested in learning about the deeper technical aspects of the MSP430 processors this book is not for you.

Arduino is huge in the hobby electronics community for learning about micro controllers. For industrial applications the MSP430 from TI has long been a solid choice for new designs, and it has a very cost effective learning tool, the msp430 launchpad board (MSP-EXP430G2) which is one third the price of Arduino. The book uses a public domain IDE called energia which is similar to the Arduino IDE, as it should be - its based on both wiring and the Arduino IDE. This book is a great introduction to getting started with the msp430. If you are new to electronics and or micro controllers this is a great place to start. In increasing detail it explains how to use msp430 features, and explores interfacing to external components either discretely or using a third party discovery board with the following sensors and devices on it for around twenty five bucks at Digikey

Various labs explore how to interface to parts on the board and the associated code to implement the interface between the circuit and to the micro controller. Each circuit is shown as a discrete circuit in case you don't have the discovery board, or just want to learn that circuit.

For a beginner to MSP 430 I give this 5 stars; for people with lots of experience less. Largely because the chances are that for a lot of projects you may want to go beyond the Energia IDE and use code composer. The other reason for dropping a star is that for the sake of completeness I would have liked to have seen deeper coverage of I2C. That being said I still really like this book.

All in all this is a great book, very readable, and very practical.

Be warned that it's extremely elementary

Yikes! this thing is basic. I know it's a beginner's book, but when it goes to the trouble to point out that "electronics are everywhere" it goes over the elementary line all the way to condescending. Maybe that has to be done.... maybe that's the writing convention nowadays, but, holy cow. Maybe nobody knows C any more, but I do, so the material on C irritated me.

Off the top of my head, I'd say 70% of the book could be cut. There is the usual rehash of turning on an LED. The last 30% might be useful in spots but there's not much I haven't seen elsewhere (online).

I didn't have anything in particular in mind in terms of projects. But something about turning on a large motor (I dunno, maybe a garage door opener) or some other tool would have been a change. That is getting outside the arena of microprocessors, but it would have been a change from all the stuff you can download.

I read the book and I can say, based on experiences with the Educational BoosterPack, if it lacks the BoosterPack, the author takes laboratories based on the performance of BoosterPack indicating the components required to interact LaunchPad-breadboard. It would have been great if the author devotes a section to Capacitive Touch BoosterPack and an application to control the angular velocity in a DC motor using IDE Power. But we must recognize merit for new users they will find in this book the answers to your questions.

While the book is a good, well written resource, the Kindle version is very flawed.

I understand the desire to have nice color coded examples using context based highlighting, it appears that during the creation of the Kindle version of this book that the highlighted code and command examples became un-scalable bitmaps. They also became blurry and very dim almost to the point of being unreadable under nearly all conditions. This really needs to be fixed for me to give it more than 2 stars. I wanted to use this on my Kindle app on my tablet but it's not really possible. I have even tried reading it on my PC Kindle app on a 23 inch display, and there it gets even worse.

Please consider fixing these issues and I can give a much better review.

I don't recommend that anyone should buy the Kindle edition in its current state.
