A first book of motion for kids, it shows a horse in full gallop and a turtle swimming up the page. A dog runs, a cat springs, an eagle soars, and a butterfly flutters. Created by Rufus Butler Seder, an inventor, artist, and filmmaker fascinated by antique optical toys, Scanimation is a state-of-the-art six-phase animation process that combines the "persistence of vision" principle with a striped acetate overlay to give the illusion of movement. It harkens back to the old magical days of the kinetoscope, and the effect is astonishing, like a Muybridge photo series springing into action—or, in terms kids can relate to, like a video without a screen. Complementing the art is a delightful rhyming text full of simple questions and fun, nonsense replies: Can you gallop like a horse? giddyup-a-loo! Can you strut like a rooster? cock-a-doodle-doo!

著者について

Rufus Butler Seder is an optical genius whose first significant invention was Lifetiles, glass-walled murals that appear to come to life when the viewer walks by. He's installed them at the Smithsonian, SeaWorld, Union Station, and other museums, aquariums, train stations, and ocean liners around the world. Next came Scanimation, and his company EyeThink, Inc., a business that produces a line of toys and gifts using technologies he's invented. Mr. Seder lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

2歳の甥にプレゼント。
仕組みがどうなってるのか気になるようで、数年を経て分解されました。
その弟も2歳になり、兄と同様、分解を含めて楽しんでいるようです。

分解を想定した作りではなく、強度不足ということで★4つ評価としましたが、
容易に分解できて仕組みを観察できること自体は悪くないと思います。

　児童書は余り好きでは無い方ながら、しかも子供達も既に成人。
　しかし逆にまた近年、児童書コーナーをうろついていると、
本書を発見してしまいました。
　
　何だろと手に取ってみると、昔々からよくある動くシールや下敷き的でしょうか、
そんなものかと思っていると、いやしかし更にとても高度なものなので
びっくりした次第でした。
　2-3画面が動く程度の物なら、よく眼にしていたでしょうが、
これはほんとに馬は走ってるし、蝶は羽ばたいているし、といった具合で、
届いた時には家族にも見せて、皆で改めて驚いたものです。
　ページを開閉で、動いて見えます。

　分解して中が見てみたい感じですが、そこは我慢して、これらのトリックに
感心するばかり。
　子供だけのものでは勿体無い、プレゼントにも喜ばれそうです。

クリスマスシーズンになると、このシリーズを甥っ子にプレゼントしています。
大きな書店などに行かなくても手軽に輸入品を買えるのは便利です。
他に

などもお勧めです。

これからも良いものが出れば購入する予定です。

小学校の読み聞かせ当番のとき、まずこの本を出すと、
あっという間に子供達が集中！本番の読み聞かせもスムーズに入れます。
「知ってるー！」という子もいますが、それでもみんな大好きなようです♪

What a clever but simple idea. As the page opens a tab gently moves page to create the look of a moving animal from butterflies flapping to monkeys swinging from the tree. My mum is a nursery nurse and was so im pressed she purchased one to take in to her nursery school. All the children have been obsessed with the book that comes to life.

My children really enjoy the Scanimation books we have several from the series. I purchased a second copy of Gallop after baby sister decided she loved the star on the last page so much she would rip it out!! This isn't a reflection on the quality of the book but rather the destructive qualities of an other enthusiastic little one!! It's a nice easy book to read for young readers and the moving pictures provide entertainment for both those reading and those being read too!

We got this as a present for a baby. I got one of these scanimation books already years ago for a baby of a friend and the moving pictures are very fascinating for any age to look at. quite good for children as well as the pages are thick and easy to turn also for little hands. There is big text with few words so it's easy to read when learning to read.
Would definitely buy this again. I can't get enough of turning the pages myself and making the animals jump, run, swim, or fly forwards and backwards.

Whilst it was OK... having read previous reviews which really raved about it, I was a bit disappointed. Compared to a similar Book "Safari" which I'd already bought - I just didn't think it compared anywhere near as good as that, but the previous product reviews seemed so exceptional, I thought there would be more to it. Safari has gone much further, is in colour, and is a much more exceptional product - don't think you can really put these books in the same category and not create unrealistic expectations.
