Enid Blyton's books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author.

She wrote over 600 books and hundreds of short stories, including favourites such as The Famous Five,The Secret Seven, The Magic Faraway Tree, Malory Towers and Noddy.

Born in London in 1897, Enid lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and adored dogs, gardening and the countryside. She died in 1968 but remains one of the world's best-loved storytellers.

Julian, Dick, Anneのきょうだいは、夏休みに遊びに行ったおじさんの家で、はじめて、いとこのGeorge(Georgina)に会います。

はじめは変わり者のGeorgeに戸惑いますが、すぐに仲良くなり、Georgeの愛犬Timと共にボートで小さな島に渡ります。

その島には壊れかけた古い城跡があり、近くの海底には、金塊を運ぶ途中で難破した船が沈んでいました。

島の探検中に、ひどい嵐がやってきます。

そして、嵐が過ぎた後、5人が目にしたのは、海底から打ち上げられた難破船でした。

最初の方のつっぱっらかってるGeorgeが、いい味出してます。

初めての洋書におすすめの本です。はじめ、ちょっと気難しい女の子Georgeがみんなと仲良くなれるか心配しましたが、子供たちの信頼関係、友情に心打たれる作品でした。３人兄弟のJulian,Dick,AnneはいとこのGeorgeにはじめて会います。Georgeの本当の名前はGeorginaという女の子ですが,男の子になりたくて、服装はもちろん、やることも男の子のやることをします。この4人に犬のTimothyが加わり、アドベンチャーを繰り広げます
５人は島に遊びに行ったときに嵐に出会います。この嵐がずっと海中にあった難破船を引き上げたことによって、5人の冒険が始まります。

比較的古い作品であり、明るく逞しい健全な子供達が冒険に乗り出し、力を合わせて問題を解決するという流れ、『The Boxcar Children』という作品シリーズによく似ている印象。
ただ『Boxcar』よりもこちらの方がやや対象年齢が高く、物語としても立体的でスリルのある展開なども盛り込まれているし、娯楽性はずっと高いと思う。特に無人島のダンジョンで宝探しというテーマは、忘れかけていた子供心をくすぐってくれることうけ合いだろう。

ただそれでもいかんせん、お子ちゃま向きの物足りなさは否めないか。
展開はいかにもご都合主義だし、なにより登場人物が一様にイイ人すぎるのがリアリティを損ねている。…多少ヘソ曲がりだったり、クセのある人物も登場するが、「けっきょく皆いい人でした、めでたしめでたし」っていう、ずっこけそうになるくらい安直なツンデレ展開だしね。
ま～良くも悪くも手堅い「古き良き時代のお話」っちゅう佇まいでありますな。

The original text and character names which is great but not with the original illustrations. The old text though comes with a warning - there is a real bias here against single child families. George's issues and behavioural problems are all blamed on her being an only which obviously gave her these negative qualities! I read to my son and skipped these statements otherwise he might feel there's something wrong with being an only child.

These bring back memories. Famous five and secret seven. Good old Enid Blyton. Okay in my day we had the paperback book collection but now I am reading them with my son on a Amazon Kindle which is just weird. However it's a trip down memory lane for me. From one of the best kids authors of all time. Apart from Michelle Magorians goodnight Mr Tom....

Read all the Famous Five books as a kid and wanted to re-read them again. Great story just as I remembered. Great to be able to get the original unchanged story and Enid Blyton wrote it. I don't understand why they try and change stories. Yes some of it may be a bit old fashioned and even a bit sexist etc but that is part of it's charm and even this thoroughly modern woman wasn't offended. A lot of fun if you enjoyed the books as a kid it is a fun trip down memory lane.

”Queer”, in the sense of strange or unusual has been excised completely. Just in case any one mistook it for something LGBTQIA+ related (heaven forfend!). Other choices are equally queer, with "shorts" being replaced by "jeans" for example.

Despite that, it's still a ripping yarn, and just as exciting as when i read it for the first time in my rather distant youth.

So, only another 20 books to go and I'll have finished the whole set :-)

I bought my 8 year old grandaughter this book to see if she enjoyed it as much as I used to as a child. She was engrossed in it and could recite the story to me as she progressed further into the book. I found a great sense of pride and comfort knowing I had passed on these stories to another generation. I will be getting the whole set now for her . Priceless.....
