This book challenged me to re-think what my role truly was as a youth pastor. Many youth pastors and leaders these days feel the pressure to have the most engaging programs, flashy events, and big numbers - all of which CAN have their place in youth min. But Heather challenges us to focus on the true calling God has placed on our lives: to build disciples who follow Jesus. She asks the question: How bad do you want it? To follow Jesus? And how bad do you want it for the youth in your care?
Through the use of scripture, her knowledge of our Jewish roots, and personal stories Heather challenges us to take our ministry discipleship deeper by following the patterns of a first-century rabbi. What I appreciated most about this book was all the idea Heather gives on how to foster a discipleship-making community in your life and ministry. She provides insights into what this can look like in our modern context and gives practical tips on how to get started in ways both big and small. She helps us move from seeing discipleship as a program to a way of life.

Oh my word this is a great book! Buy it yesterday. I have been in student ministries for almost two decades, alongside Masters and Doctoral work in biblical studies... and so I have found most curriculums to be lacking... but here is why I found this book SO helpful.
ONE. It recovers Jesus in context. One of the most important things we do as student pastors is to give our kiddos a great picture of Jesus, his life, and his teaching. Heather's work is perhaps summed up by this goal: Jesus in his first century, rabbinic context. She sees Jesus as a first century rabbi, and at the same time a unique stage in the revelation of the living God.
TWO. We have actually never been more equipped to do this well after decades of academic recovery of the Jewish context of Jesus-- but so many books that help you access this material are super heady and dense. Heather takes you straight to the salient points of the Jewishness of Jesus and then does what is most helpful-- see point three!
THREE. This book is chock full of practical ways to implement teaching and discipling students like Jesus. This is the extra mile that makes this a student ministries must-- you don't have to guess at how to adapt your ministry model and pastoral style in light of the material. Instead, Heather creatively talks about how understanding Jesus in Jewish context can completely reinvigorate your students program... and she shows you how.
Pick this one up. You won't regret it.
